Tiberian Sun was my game when I was younger. Lots of love for that one in particular.

Me too. Cool story, very distinct but interesting factions and a lot of attention to details (cyborg crawling at low HP, vehicles run over infantry, allied flamethrowers damage eachother, EM Pulse disable electronic equipment, invisibility, underground transporters etc). On the other hand, some missions were just too hard. I liked NOD more, but an army of GDI with a couple of Titans really made the atmosphere of the game.

+1kkkkk also the expansion Firestorm (well i always call it Ionstorm), The use of known actors as Michael "Corporal Hicks" Biehn as Commander McNeil and James Earl Jones as General Solomon and of course the inmortal Joseph Kucan as Kane was amazing.

RA3 afaik is bad, or at least not as good as Red Alert 2. RA2 is one of my favorite games ever, and Yuri's revenge is amaziingg.

Happy cake day mate!. And I have nothing against Renegades but in my opinion, RA2 and Generals are the best out of the entire franchise. The last few entries have been sub par.

C&C has always been Red Alert for me. But the original is super dated now and the 3rd is so new that should you play it you'll ruin other potentially awesome titles (because they'll seem crap and antiquated). So I'm going to say Red Alert 2, new enough to still look ok, but old enough that it won't spoil all the other games for you.

My favorite missions were the ones with the lone Commando in the original C&C, so that gets my vote.
... ... ...granted, that's still also pretty much the only one I've played.

Hmm... more of a cat and mouse where the mouse is blowing up the cat's buildings. :)
And apparently my memory has tricked me into thinking there was more than one of those missions (found a YouTube recap of it and there's just the one) -- still, it was quite memorable. :)

1) Are the games dated? Well, that depends on your personal preference , the first few games in the series are ofc old now and by todays standards have really bad graphics but they still appeal to me ( considering that I grew up playing them ). They still have some of the best RTS elements in the genre. So I'd advise giving them a try and form your own opinion.

2)Do the new games suck? Sadly, the latest ones really do suck. Its really really bad. But again, I might be biased since I'm a long time fan of the franchise.

3) The best first game? That depends on a couple of factors. There are three "universes" in CnC franchise, so I'll let you select by suggesting the best in each franchise.

       a) For the Tiberium Series : I'll suggest CnC 3 - Tiberium Wars as its relatively new, has a good plot and good game elements. Don't go near its expansion Kane's Wrath or the disaster known as CnC 4 - Tiberium Twilight

       b) For Red Alert Series : Red Alert 2 hands down is the number 1. Its the best of the entire series in my opinion. RA3 is also not bad but not as good as RA2.

        c) For Generals Series: Well, there is only Generals and its expansion Zero hour which are both really good. I would suggest you try them both out first as I think they are the best of the series.

So TLDR : Try out Generals first, followed by RA2 and Tiberium wars. Cheers and have fun.

PS: Renegade is the only game in the series that wasn't a RTS ( its a shooter game ). Its good but the best part was the multiplayer and the single player campaign sucked. Considering that there won't be many players online for the game, I suggest you skip it.

Agreed, but I wouldn't recommend Generals to get aquainted with the series. It's rather atypical for C&C. RA2 and TW are perfect for the newcomers, they have all the classical elements and are polished from start to finish.

Older games (from the first C&C to TibSun) have mostly nostalgic/historical value. I mean, they're good, they were excellent for their time, but often you need to close your eyes on some inconveniences to see the better part. I still replay them with pleasure, but they can scare off modern players.

I agree wholeheartedly. But the reason I recommended Generals first is because though its atypical to CnC, it does have some similarity to other RTS games and the contemporary units would make it easier. RA2 and TW have some unique units ( especially RA2 ) that change the gameplay a lot.

It is a great game. I don't know about others but I played the multiplayer a lot and there were a lot of players in it ( but you know gamespy ... ) Do check out the videos to get an idea. I think it was one of the best FPS games of its time. Its just that the Single player campaign was really weak compared to the others in the series ( though better than the piece meal SP campaign they stick to games like CoD and BF these days )

I never really passed any of them either. C&C3 would be the one I've played the most of. I played a bit of Renegade too but I wouldn't recommend that one to start with as it's more of a shooter than an rts like the rest of them. I've heard Red Alert 2 is really good.

I own them all too, and have not finished most of them. I got the original C&C back in 1996 when it came out. Love that game to bits. But time has not been well to it I guess. If you can stand the graphics, go ahead and play the original.

Red Alert 2 is really good, so is Tiberian Sun. They look a lot better too. Here's something to get you started:

There's also Dune 2000 and Emperor: Battle for Dune. Those 2 play exactly like the most C&C. Emperor has an excellent soundtrack but the single player is a bit subpar.

My main gripe with the Command and Conquer games is how insignificant and cost-ineficient infantry becomes after vehicles enter into the game. I think the only game that avoids that problem is Yuri's Revenge.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not really, Yuri's Revenge is just Red Alert 2 with a few additions. Yuri's brutes are the only infantry units that match tank value, but because they're melee they can be squashed by prism tanks very easily. But it doesn't matter either way, cause you can't play wit Yuri in the campaign and Yuri is really weak in multiplayer. Because it's not a matter the brutes being that much better than other elite infantry like Tesla Troopers or rocketeers, that they outshine the tanks, but rather Yuri not having tanks that are really worthwhile buying. I mean: magnetic tanks that take forever to kill something? Giant brains on wheels that can only hypnotize one unit at a time? WTF???

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I wasn't talking about Yuri's faction in particular.

Soviets have now bunkers so they can actually put use to those conscrips in non urban maps. Flak troopers become a lot better vs other soldiers. Allieds have the anti vehicle GIs, and the crusher tank, etc.

It's not as easy to kill a mob of soldiers as it was in tibsun where a couple of flame tanks could kill a dozen of infantry units in a couple of seconds.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But they still didn't solve the core balance problems with the tanks, which were: Apokalipse tanks were still overpowered as fuck, in both defense and offense, the Prism tanks' ability to scale like crazy in damage through numbers (and being incredibly cost efficient to boot) and Mirage tanks being able to obliterate any kind of infantry, even when relatively outnumbered. so basically all Yuri's Revenge did as make the Rhino ad Grizzly tanks worthless :-p.

IMO, Generals was the best game to balance units. Properly managed anti-vehicle infantry could be deadly against traditional anti-armor vehicles, and tank spam was way less efficient because of that (unless you took care to spam different types, of course). It was also easier for infantry to avoid the simple run-them-over solution.
In the C&C franchise I think only RA3 managed to avoid the same issue mainly due to its extreme unit versatility (which I find to be too much in the first place).

I thought 3 was a weaker entry, and I remember being impressed by Generals and Tiberium Wars. RA2 is my favorite, though, so I agree with you in part.

Of course, I think Tiberian Wars was pretty weak too, iirc. I remember people were not impressed.

Play it in this order : Red Alert 2, Red Alert 2 : Yuri's Revenge, Red Alert 3

I didn't really play the first Red Alert , but the ones mentioned I've had alot of fun especially Red Alert 2

I've also tryed Command & Conquer Generals...not bad... but the newer C&C keep gettin sci-fi ish compared to the old ones which in some point I dislike.

The first Red Alert is still good, but dated. You can play an updated version by using OpenRA or The Red Alert mod. Of course, if you're a purist, like me, then you won't mind just playing the original game.

Red Alert 2 would be my next suggestion. If you start with RA2, you won't really enjoy RA that much, hence my reason for making this your second game. Yuri's Revenge is great, too, so play that after you finish RA2.

After that, I'd recommend you try the Generals series, and then, if you still want more, the Tiberium series. It is highly likely that you will end up going back to RA2, but you will pretty much have experienced the good that the C&C franchise has to offer.

I recommend all of them! Renegade is the odd one out, being a FPS if I remember correctly (third person? I don't even remember, it's been years). I know that Tiberian Sun is very well liked, but I'm not the best judge; I grew up on RA2, so that's what I'd personally recommend!

Tiberian Twilight is not really the same as the others, as it's less base oriented and feels a little like a MOBA (obviously it's not a MOBA, but it seems to co-opt some of the elements to make the game more fast paced) in terms of smaller unit presences and stronger command units.. It's short, so it might be fast, but I don't think it holds up as well as the others.

Good call. I enjoyed it more for the setting (nostalgia mostly, though it was... strange, since I never played Tiberian Wars so it was a jump in continuity) and while it's not a terrible game you'd probably really miss the base building of the others.

I can give you plenty more reasons why you should avoid it. But if you promise that you'll never even consider it until you've at least tried out every other game in the franchise (and I still wouldn't recommend it then), I shall spare you. :P
