All I can say is if you're really gonna go through with a microATX, be sure you can fit everything.

I calculated all the sizes, it should be fine. I'm a bit worried about the 212 EVO as it is a giant bulky beast, but it is still the most popular CPU cooler out there.
Comment has been collapsed.
Alright.
I only mentioned this since my friend upgraded his GPU and it was too big for his case lol
Comment has been collapsed.
I was honestly considering something like this and upgrading the power supply manually.
EDIT: Going by your specs I'm curious how you've got so little ram, harddrive space and processing power for that price? o.o
EDIT 2: Ah nvm GTX 980. I'd probably recommend downgrading the graphics card a little (GTX 970, HERESY I know but better bang for you buck) to get more RAM and a better CPU.
Comment has been collapsed.
The GTX 980 is around 40% of the price lol, also don't forget the monitor is included in the price (another 10%)
The SSD is 250 GB, that's quite expensive, and as I said I don't need much space (I am only using 170GB on my laptop at the moment and that is more than enough)
16 Gigs of RAM would cost 2x as much as the 8, and there are no games using more than 8GB at the moment (and it's easy to upgrade later on anyway)
The Intel i5 4690K is as good as it gets, anything better is just an overkill for gaming imo.
Edit: Yeah I'm still torn between the 970 and 980, but the 980 seems more futureproof (with the 970 having that VRAM issue and all), the performance of the factory overclocked EVGA GTX970 FTW matches (sometimes surpasses) the performance of the GTX 980 reference card btw.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'd suggest going with 970 if I am honest. It will save you a considerable amount of money and in long run by time it becomes obsolete the next generation of graphics cards will be half the price of the current 980.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, 120 SSD was my initial plan, but seeing that 120GB costs 50gbp and 240 costs 80gbp, it'd save around 30% on the extra 120 GB.
Comment has been collapsed.
what's up with that 500GB HDD? Aren't 2, 3, 4 TB HDDs quite affordable these days?
Comment has been collapsed.
this thread interests me because i'm trying to buy the smallest gaming desktop for casual and comp csgo (as cheap as possible)
tried a mini itx build on pcpartpicker and got something like 250$ but in pcpartpicker spain a similar build got almost 100€ above the price in dollars using the cheapest parts

Also cannot run any games (except pre 1990 ones, and gameboy games (if built into an emulator). He said he wants to play CS:GO.
Comment has been collapsed.
You want an MSI graphics card. Purely because they're generally a bit shorter than the reference design.
Comment has been collapsed.
The Aerocool DS supports a GPU up to 32cm in length, the Asus GTX 980 is 28.86cm so it should fit. Also the STRIX GPUs have a really convincing cooling/0dB fan technology.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah ok, that should work then hopefully although remember you'll also need a bit of room for the cables. And it's not like MSI is known for being noisy. But go for ASUS, I used to be an ASUS guy myself but the MSI 780 was like $100 cheaper in local currency so now I'm an MSI man when it comes to GPUs. And the extra room VS the ASUS certainly doesn't hurt me, even in CM Storm Scout II.
Comment has been collapsed.
I double checked the prices, the price difference between the STRIX and a TWIN Frozr is around the price of a pack of cigarettes, and ASUS looks more reliable to me. The size in my microATX really is an important factor though...

Can you describe exactly your experience with the 840 EVO? I heard it reads older files slower or something.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah. They released a software some time after the issue was known to fix it. It did for me, but some time ago I also read that the issue kinda remains. Didn't test if true for me. Just saying that you could get a SSD that has no known issues. :D

I recommed you to wait some weeks for AMD to release their new GPU´s, those benchmarks(they are not oficial) shows very very interesting things, especially comparing them against the 980 and 970. Inb4 a fanboy comes with the argument about heat and power consumption, yes, AMD is heater( problem solved with aftermarket coolers) and consumes more power, I can't deny that, but in regard of power consumption, its just a few bucks per year of difference compared to nvidia, you spent more money in Doritos and Mountain Dew.
Comment has been collapsed.
Heat+noise are just the two things my whole build is trying to avoid. Also what about the utter mess of AMD drivers?
I am not a fanboy, I used INTEL GMA Graphics for gaming most of the time, and then the horrible NVIDIA Optimus technology based GT620m. It'll take 3-4 months to save up for the gmaing pc so I'll check the AMD GPUs anyway, but NVIDIA still seems the better choice to me. (GTX970 eats the 290x for breakfast)
Comment has been collapsed.
I wasn't refering my fanboy term to you, haha sorry my english writting skills sometimes lead to missunderstandings, anyway about the noise and heat, those can be avioded with aftermarket solutions, plus the 390X will come with a cooler master watercoling unit. About the drivers, well i give you that, the last catalyst omega driver by AMD is awesome tho, plus Free Sync!!!
At the end of the day man, even with a 970 you will enjoy of an extraordinary gaming machine.
Edit: here are the benchmarks for the 390x(Captain Jack)

I like you except the CPU, use i7 trust me you won't be able to ultra everything now without slight lag even with that setup.
Comment has been collapsed.
Not true. i5 and i7 don't really have difference in game, mainly on the paper. Yes, i7 would be a better choice if You're doing 3D models, but not really in games. i5-4690K is a really solid pick for a gaming PC, especially if You're going to overclock.
Edit: Wait, You like him, not the build? ;)
Comment has been collapsed.
People who recommend i7 obviosly don't know what they are talking about. I5 is the best for gaming and always has been. I7 is an unnecessary overkill with gigantic price increases, mostly suited for workstation PCs. The i5 4690k clocked at 4GHz surpasses BY FAR the ultra requirements of all games currently on sale.
Edit: I'm glad that you like me though :3 that's so sweet
Comment has been collapsed.
Ok don't say that I don't warn you.
Keep dreaming with that setup you can ultra everything without some lag.
Comment has been collapsed.
You seems to be like a person who loves i7 above all and has i7-5960x. With that setup he could run pretty-much everything on ultra. Also, don't believe the recommended specs. I have a true craptop and I can run the games I shouldn't run.
Edit: I'm not trying to offend You.

My old rigs
PC Gaming Rigs, PS3, PS VITA, PSP
i7 4790 | MSI GTX 780 Ti TF OC | 12 GB RAM | 250GB SSD | 6 TB HDD | Sony Bravia 40HX750 | Altec Lansing MX6021 | Win8.1
I can't bought 4790K cause when I do buy it it haven't released yet
Check the chart

Another wise advice : trust me you don;t want playing game overclocked all the time.
Better add 2nd GPU than overclocked it.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh yeah in case you don't get it yet even my old rigs CAN'T ultra everything.
I CAN ultra Watch Dogs without single 0.001 second lag and without mod though (pure game and pure bad port game).
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, I started looking and realized that my build is pretty different and costs like 50€ more (If I can find a SSD for 50€ on Amazon, then I'll take the SSD in first place, if not, I'll go with a 1 TB HDD and add a 240 GB SSD later) Anyway, here it is!
Comment has been collapsed.
Chances are an SSD isn't that important anyway, everybody is highly recommending it but I don't know, I can live with 1-5, 2+ seconds of loading times lol. I see you are going with the GTX 970, I think I'll ditch the GTX 980 too, it's just way too fkin expensive.
Comment has been collapsed.
you right, it only impact loading time,
when you use it for windows, the windows boot so fast, real fast.
Comment has been collapsed.
True that, I just realized that the price difference between the 500GB Toshiba and an 1TB WD Blue is the price of a bottle of Coke lol.
Comment has been collapsed.
smaller SSD become problem when you have a lot of data in user documents, include many default save and data folder for many games.
Comment has been collapsed.
bad update, you revised all the important part and tuned it down.
Comment has been collapsed.
I start saying no overclock, you dont need it at all. You can choose the fans you like, but gtx980 and silent build are incomatible terms.

Shameless self-bump I'm interested in more opinions :)

Not sure if you've already built this, but it looks good to me with a couple possible improvements:
PSU: The EVGA 600B (HEC internals/component) might not give you the best value for your money unless you're getting a super sale on it. I'd recommend taking a look at this list, it's good for those who don't work with a large variety of PSUs. That and JohnnyGuru are great resources. Personally, I think Newegg's capstone gold models are a great value, as they go on sale regularly and are top quality internals. You can get a 600W PSU made with basically the same parts as a high end branded model for a fraction of the price. I've picked up a 750W superflower based unit for $30 in the past. If you don't plan to SLI, 600W is good for your specs.
SSD: Here on SGs, we're all about games. If you like to have any number installed, 120gb is nothing. And keep in mind that with the 840 EVO you'll want to leave 12gb of that space empty for overprovisioning. You can do it with samsung magician. So, you've basically got under 100gb of usable space. That's your OS and very little game space. And it will probably end up making you want more SSD space. I recommend looking for sales on a couple 250gb or less SSDs, don't let the less than perfect reviews on some scare you if the price is a steal. In 99% of the cases you'll be happy with your purchase and have more cash leftover, and in 1% you will probably still be under warranty if something happens. Slap a few SSDs in your case, they're small and can be mounted anywhere since they aren't hot and don't vibrate. You could literally duct tape them to the side of your case. Probably not ideal, but it'd work fine.
Edit: just read you're only using 170gb atm. That will probably change when you get your desktop with a good GPU and start stretching its legs. Suddenly you install games like AC:Unity and other current gen games that take 50GB each. Games in the next couple years are already putting out specs with 100gb installs.

So, I'm planning on building a gaming PC for myself, and I'm still in the planning stage (It'll take me 3-4 months to save up the money anyway, so I have time lol) My laptop died 1-2 months ago, and now all games run at sub 20 fps ((Skyrim used to be 40+ FPS on high, now 17FPS tops, CS:GO used to be 66-79 fps, now 28fps tops) so I am on a '"gaming break" :(
Anyway here are my proposed specs:
CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
MOBO: Asus Z97M-PLUS Micro ATX LGA1150 (you'll see why Micro ATX)
RAM: Kingston Fury Black Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
Storage I: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB SSD (was 240GB before)
Storage II: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM (was Toshiba 500GB 7200RPM HDD before)
GPU: Asus Geforce GTX 970 4GB STRIX (was Asus GeForce GTX 980 4GB STRIX before, still torn between the two)
Case: Aerocool DS Cube Red Edition Silent Cube MicroATX Mini Tower Case
Additional Fan: Aerocool DS 140mm Red 93.4 CFM 140mm Fan
PSU: EVGA 600B 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply
Monitor: BenQ GL2450HM 60Hz 24.0" Monitor (I plan on playing at 1920x1080 only)
[Updated] Cost ~$1500
(it was around $1850 before)
Now I plan on slightly overclocking the i5 4690K to 4GHz (hence the 212 EVO). This build is focused on portability/compact size. It's quite a tiny and silent case hence the microATX build. I don't plan on any serious overclocking/upgrading in the next 3+ years.
Anyway any opinions?
