2009's Borderlands is returning in a new Game of the Year Edition, releasing on April 3rd. It'll be free to all existing owners of Borderlands on Steam, 2K has confirmed, and it'll make a bunch of small but significant tweaks to the game. As well as a minimap in the style of Borderlands 2 which you can switch on or off, the inventory system will be simplified, and you'll automatically pick up items found on the ground like ammo and health.

There are more fundamental tweaks to the game, too. The game's final boss has been altered for a tougher, more rewarding challenge, and to make it a more "engaging" encounter

The SHiFT player rewards are also coming to the game—anyone who's played Borderlands 2 or The Pre-Sequel on PC will get 75 free Golden Keys, as well as two random new weapons when they create a new Vault Hunter. Six new legendary weapons have been added to the game, too, which you can unlock by hoovering up Golden Keys or by defeating bosses. More customisation options are being added for player characters, too, with five swappable sets of head gear for your Vault Hunter available at the start.

Wow, I guess that means grabbing a copy of the base game, if you haven't already, is super worth it right now!

Edit: Just checked, unless you bought the Humble Endless RPG bundle, the lowest price for Borderlands right now is around $5.81. Not exactly what I'd call a "low price" I guess.

Hell yeah
Awwww, I already bought the GOTY version

I don't regret having already given my money to Gearbox for BL-GOTY. I have thoroughly enjoyed the game. Looks like it's almost time to dust it off and play some more, though. Those are welcome tweaks. )

Yeah, the tweaks sound amazing! The article mentioned some visual upgrades too but I guess that'll probably be a bit hard to discern :P

It's good to know that they've been doing other stuff on the side as well an not just ruining their company by doing multiplayer games nobody has ever asked for. (remember that 1vs1 shooter card game? :D)

Yeah, that's the one. I thought they had another multiplayer flop after Battleborn, something like Stinkbomb or Dropbomb or something like that, but apparently I mixed that up and the game wasn't from Gearbox afterall. (or they wiped the internet :D)

You mean Dirty Bomb®?

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, that's the one. Thanks, that question would have kept bothering me for a while. But apparently I was mixing together information from 2 different games since Gearbox doesn't seem to be involved here and the servers are still up and running.

I should have know no developer would call their game Stinkbomb :D

Don't know the game at all, but the name stuck with me as dirty bomb is also used to refer to a 'nuclear' bomb without a nuclear explosion, but just to contaminate the area (apart from the regular explosion).

Oh, but I've played Dirty Bomb (my avatar's from that game by the way) and I'm 100% sure it's not developed or published by Gearbox. The studio's called Splash Damage and they are a pretty cool team.

Wow, I'm surprised Gearbox actually offers it for free. I was sure a scummy company like them would actually ask full price for that.

Well, I guess it's one way to pump up some extra hype for Borderlands 3 :)

Probably, won't do me much though. Unless they really start to become less scummy in the coming few years.

And on a lesser scale, being responsible for We Happy Few being grossly overpriced on release.

Comment has been collapsed.

Just to keep cementing that well earned reputation of theirs, they also specifically DIDN"T give the "remastered" version of Bulletsorm to owners of the game, despite mostly removing GFWL to make the game playtable in all ways it wasn't anymore for current owners while also updating the graphics for $40

So, especially surprising a decision here.

Eh, Bulletstorm is a bit different in that it involved the game changing publishers. That can complicate things in setting up discounts/freebies. Still, 40 bucks is overpriced for a bare-bones re-release of a game that old. On the plus side it's doubtful Gearbox is a worse owner for the IP than EA was...

If it's just an "update" which is the way they phrased it, then it'll just update your current game and achievements will remain.
That said I hope it's a new "Remastered" entry (like was done with Bioshock).

That cool, I guess. Though after already spending 90+ hours with Borderlands, and being spoiled by the generally better Borderlands 2, I'm not sure that I have any desire to go back to the original.

I think it's great that they chose to update their older games as there's a good amount of life still in them. There's around 1.8k daily players in Borderlands 1 and that came out in 2009, over 16k daily players in Borderlands 2 which came out in 2012 and around 3k players in the Pre-Sequel. I'm sure once the updates happen there's going to be a lot more.

I have Borderlands 1 installed and I'm playing 2 currently. I finished the main story in 2, now doing the DLC portions(Creature Dome, Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt, Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage, Captain Scarlett and her Pirate's Booty).

I just ended up grabbing the DLC I didn't own via the Handsome pack bundle. I got all 5 of the Headhunter DLC and skins for Borderlands 2 along with the 5 DLC I didn't have for the Pre-Sequel for around $7. I thought this was a really good deal especially since I was going to buy the 5 Headhunter DLC for around $4.50 on sale.

Yeah, honestly, for "classics" (I'm aware this term is probably pretty subjective :P), I think it's always a great idea for game companies to revisit them from time to time and give them some new life, especially if there's still interest around the game or franchise, and that like you said, there are still people playing the game. Coz of this I'm a fan of remastered stuff as well :)

In short, yes, base game owners will receive the update.

This is awesome news! I've been trying and failing to really get into Borderlands ever since I got it in that bundle, and the lack of minimap is one of the biggest reasons why. I'm terrible about getting lost (and by that I mean that saying I open the big map every ten seconds is no exaggeration). And the inventory, while not impossible to deal with, is far from optimal, so any upgrade is much-welcomed.

I greatly prefered BL2/TPS to the way things were done in Borderlands 1, it just got dated faster (Same thing with Mass Effect 1 vs 2/3), so I'll definitely be back into it.

There should be option "I bought GOTY because it was cheaper than base game". I did. years ago. I haven't even considered buying GOTY, but it was cheaper than just Borderlands itself, so... it was obvious decision.

In some way, yeah. You'll get the "tweaks" like a minimap, new weapons, more challenging final boss fight, more customizations, etc :)

I've played the original Borderlands and found it to be bland and repetitive. Does this upgrade make the game interesting?

Well, like most loot shooters it is repetitive.
It's also not intended to be played solo.

I don't see how a boring game becomes interesting when multiple people are doing the same boring thing. Maybe it's just me. I should stick to shooters from the 1990s.

I should stick to shooters from the 1990s.

Interestingly Borderlands 2 had a very strong oldschool shooter vibe for me (lack of a cover system etc.) but basically I would describe the Borderlands appeal like this:

  • Silly humour with over the top characters and lots of references
  • chase for better Gear
  • Early Hero shooter that contrary to many newer ones still allows various builds for every character
