2009's Borderlands is returning in a new Game of the Year Edition, releasing on April 3rd. It'll be free to all existing owners of Borderlands on Steam, 2K has confirmed, and it'll make a bunch of small but significant tweaks to the game. As well as a minimap in the style of Borderlands 2 which you can switch on or off, the inventory system will be simplified, and you'll automatically pick up items found on the ground like ammo and health.

There are more fundamental tweaks to the game, too. The game's final boss has been altered for a tougher, more rewarding challenge, and to make it a more "engaging" encounter

The SHiFT player rewards are also coming to the game—anyone who's played Borderlands 2 or The Pre-Sequel on PC will get 75 free Golden Keys, as well as two random new weapons when they create a new Vault Hunter. Six new legendary weapons have been added to the game, too, which you can unlock by hoovering up Golden Keys or by defeating bosses. More customisation options are being added for player characters, too, with five swappable sets of head gear for your Vault Hunter available at the start.

Wow, I guess that means grabbing a copy of the base game, if you haven't already, is super worth it right now!

Edit: Just checked, unless you bought the Humble Endless RPG bundle, the lowest price for Borderlands right now is around $5.81. Not exactly what I'd call a "low price" I guess.

If you already have the game in your steam library, new remaster should appear there automatically.

No if you havent converted the game before the last week as they removed that feature.

Super glad I picked it up at a Steam sale not too long ago. Same thing happened with Bioshock - 2K likes their remasters.

So they say "download the update"... so will it not be a completely new product like with the Bioshock stuff? Also, do we have to go out of our way to get the game from the store or will it be automatically added?

Regardless, I'm surprisingly excited for this because I want to give Borderlands another chance.

As to your second question, it will get added automatically to your account if you own one of the packages listed in this sub, no actions are required.
Your first question cannot be answered by me, but I think it's more than just a few files you would download for a small update.

Looks like BL2 and Pre-Sequel will be getting something tomorrow as well: https://www.pcgamer.com/borderlands-2-and-the-pre-sequel-are-getting-free-4k-texture-packs/

Realistically, I can't imagine most people owning Borderlands wouldn't already have the GOTY edition. I bought it for $7.49 during a sale a full year before BL2 even launched, and again a little over a year later as part of a $10 pack on Amazon with the first two Bioshock games and Duke Nukem Forever.

That said, the update intrigues me and I'll probably re-download the game. A lot of the enemies felt like ridiculously boring bullet sponges, but I'm a sucker for a good bout of random looting.

According to the article... yes, it will, but whether or not it'll be visible remains to be seen :)

The game has already been updated!
It would be nice if Gearbox had changed the game banner that is shown in the STEAM library.
Despite showing all the DLCS, only the name of the game was given the term "GOTY".

I installed that, defaulted to 640x480, none of the more advanced graphics options.. I think all they have done sofar is move everyone who had some version of Borderlands to Borderlands GOTY, but haven't yet pushed the remaster..

Yep. I noticed the name change in my library but it doesn't seem to reflect on the store page yet. Just opened the game (default to 480, yuck), and nothing seems to be updated. No SHiFT code option and none of the other visual upgrades. Or, more tellingly, no updates have occured yet.

Got updates for both 2 and TPS, though. 1 should be coming soon :)

Did all "game of the year" games change to "GOTY"? Because I noticed how Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City are both GOTY in my library now. I don't remember it being like that, and I only noticed it now so I don't know for how long it's been like this. And yeah, I got the Borderlands GOTY as well, but not the enhanced version (yet).

Restart steam and it will be in your library now. Downlaoding it myself.

I was in mid download until I watched this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju0l40sDX5M&feature=youtu.be

Cancelled immediately. That performance drop on the Nine-Toes fight is disgusting. Under 60 fps -Yuck! Even dropped down to 30's. Hope it gets fixed.

Nine-Toes

His three balls must require too much gfx power to render...

But seriously that's just really weird, when everything else still shows high, and more consistent FPS numbers. Let's see if/when that gets patched.

Looks like now there's only the option to buy the whole package with Borderlands GOTY and Borderlands Enhanced which is a lot more expensive.

Now I feel better about buying the GOTY edition two months before the Enhanced edition was announced... XD
