Aside from it never being on a great deal before, Baldurs Gate I & II are perhaps the best isometric top down RPG's ever made, up there with some of the best PC games ever made.
BeamDog ballsed up the remaster/re-release slightly but added co-op and DLC...soooo its a double edged sword.
Basically I wanted to promote one of my favourite all time games, buy this game.

Would you also recommend this to someone who has never played an isometric crpg before?

Siege of Dragonspear has been crushed to the ground on everywhere but its Steam ratings. I have it on my GOG wishlist in case it gets some super discount.
Honestly, I wish they still had the original releases sold on GOG. But with their removal, at least the two updated versions should be a good deal for this money, especially if someone is interested in old-school isometric cRPGs.

the non-stupid edition
Which is that? There's no functional differences between the games other than the enhanced versions utilizing a modernized engine, and Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale incorporating the BG2 class system... right?
I hadn't heard any negatives about the remakes before this thread, in any case [other than grumbles about how it patched up exploits :P].

The remakes got a tonne of negative reviews.
As someone who was absolutely pumped for the release of the remake, I literally bought it the second I could. I installed it and bought a second copy for my friend because multiplayer Baldurs Gate was the stuff of my childhood dreams. I then spent around 10 hours just trying to get the game to work, which was insane, my PC wasn't running it and a lot of people had the same problem, when my PC in 1999 was running it absolutely fine with a total memory of around 3/4gb.
Then when I final got a work around for that(not a patch) the multiplayer to be absolutely frank, sucked. It never ever ever stayed connected and was completely littered with bugs.
All that being said, things did eventually get patched and the second game came with dedicated servers. The additional characters are great, the additional spells and story is great. Overall it felt a bit rushed out the door to try and garner hype for a "planned" Baldurs Gate 3, which whilst perhaps not making sense story wise(where could they possibly go right?) would be an insta buy for probably ever old school gamer ever.
It was a welcome addition, any additional Baldurs Gate content is good, but the remakes were handled absolutely awfully.

As noted, the originals are included in any enhanced edition.
In that sense, the outright replacement is a cash grab- but the games are nevertheless still available.
And grief, $35? I'm getting results at $12 for the complete set of BG, BG2, Sword Coast, and Throne of Bhaal in unopened boxes, shipped. Pre-owned at at about $8, or at about $3 per individual game.
Icewind Dale is similarly at $10 for the complete set of Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale 2, and Heart of Winter, $7 used, and at about $3 per individual game. I'm not sure why ebay hates you, but the complete set of games shouldn't run anyone more than $15-22. :X

$5-6 for each of ToEE or Torment, so you'd still be in the range of $25 total, buying them individually and pre-owned.
[Your estimate for the complete collection is about on point for buying them new, however. :X]
Either way, it's still more expensive than it used to be getting them during a GOG sale, I imagine.
But yeah, complete collections do tend to be excellent bargains when they're available, if you get them right before they get removed from shelves. Moreso for digital collections, which tend to just get cheaper and cheaper over time, without ever popping back into collectability considerations. Or at least, so it was until this trend of releasing enhanced editions at the expense of removing older editions started up.. :X
Still, waiting on GOG to put out the games as an 80% off set, might still be the best way to go, unless you want to try and hold out for a bundle or steam sale. Then again, it seems likely you'd have to buy Dragonspear to get the best discount, now, so there's that potential downside. :P

Use coupon code WINTERSALE10 for an additional 10% off, bringing the total to approximately 76% off
These games don't seem to go on sale for 75% off too often anymore and Siege of Dragonspear has never been anywhere near that low from what I saw, so seems like a decent deal.
