Well windows 8 leaves windows 7 in the dust from a performance point of view, windows 8 slightly beats windows 7 in gaming except borderlands 2 (7 is better by 5%)

For now it's a bit buggy but maybe when they decide to fix the bugs and release Service Pack 1 it will be better. It should be better. It's made for touchscreen devices but I have it on Virtual Machine and I like it. I'm going to make it my second operating system using dual boot. I actually like how it looks and works - even on Virtual Machine with only 1GB of RAM and using 1GHz it's faster than Windows 7 in same conditions.

This is almost always what I do. Wait for SP1 (Service Pack 1). If any of the major Driver/compatibility issues are not resolved with SP1, then you've got problems. First release is often like a very stable Beta.

The only thing that keeps me from installing Windows 8 is that Avira doesn't work (yet) and no aero. The rest of it is great.

It doesn't have aero. You can tweak it to use transparency but it's nothing like it.
Sorry, but Security Essentials sucks and I know this for a fact.
I'm sticking with Avira.

You are right that it doesn't have aero but it still has the transparent windows, etc. Can you tell me where the difference is? I don't say Avira is bad (I used it myself) but I just said you don't need to have a anti-virus software on Win 8 and MS Security Essentials isn't bad.
BTW Avira already supports Win 8.

MSE is great, no idea what that guy is talking about.

You mean using an upgrade key for a clean install? Many have said that this has worked for them.

Not at all, it is a huge mistake on their part. There is nothing illegal about a bug in their system, which they know about and have not patched. Therefore, since no one is out and out trying to steal keys from Microsoft, in fact they are being given keys, there is nothing wrong with having a copy like this. Of course, they will do something because the EULA gives them the rights to all but murder you in your sleep....

It is a mistake...and what do we do with mistakes? Fix them. If I was this company I would just disable the keys that were used for unlocking windows(Easily done with a quick scan while updating). What are people going to complain that a loophole was fixed?
But honestly Windows 8 should have been free, they will make enough money on the app store to justify getting it out to as many people as they can.

I understand that but its still the key they gave out, which they can just run through a program to detect who used the loophole, or so I would think...
Idk really, just my view on it, maybe you are correct and if so WOO FREE WINDOWS :-P.

While Windows 8 beats Windows 7 in performance on most stuff, I give you some cons why not to upgrade if you already have 7.
1) You'll have to relearn how to use your whole system again.
2) You can't disable UAC, the piece of crap they left since Vista.
3) As reported from some users, some stuff don't work on 8.

Would be more akin to locking every door to every room in your house.

...and having an over-zealous butler who follows you around the house, constantly asking if it is Sir's desire to unlock this door?". Upon hearing your frustrated "Yes, Crichton", he will then follow it up with a raised eyebrow, and a cautious "Is Sir REALLY sure?".

I disabled UAC via registry and I don't really need any of the Metro apps so I don't care if they're no longer available.
Comment has been collapsed.
You can disable UAC still. Go to control panel, it's in the exact same place it has been since Vista... just drag the slider down, it's no different than 7. Where did you get that you can't disable it from?...

Is this still working? And does Windows 8 work well with Steam and some old games?

Tried to install it on different partition yesterday. While it not much differs than 7, but I dislike Metro UI. Not the design, but I just don't like it always goes in full-screen, like Skype. I am multitasker and I don't feel like switching desktop from normal to Metro every time.
