I won't switch to Win 8 even if it's free.
You can play most if not all of your steam games on it.

I love it really. the pre-release versions were all crab, I used them all. but now my laptop runs great with it than it was with windows 7 honestly :)

I absolutely hate the look of Modern UI and that's a good enough reason for me not to "upgrade" from 7.
Comment has been collapsed.
Modern UI is the same as Metro and while you can "disable" it using 3rd-party software, it doesn't make Win 8 better. For an OS to be good, it should be usable without any additional 3rd-party software. The only way to really disable the Modern UI "feature" is to use the explorer.exe from Win 7 and that also disables other features too.

sorry to disappoint you but I didn't do a fresh install :D all I did is download the upgrade on top of my old system which was freakishly slow and buggy because of dell stupid software and overheating problem too. After I upgraded it though I wasn't bothered by the software pack from dell and it was running great. I uninstalled that pack later though and even better it got rid of the frequent overheating somehow. Whatever other opinions may be, they don't matter much to me as long as my pc is running better than before XD . I'm just trying to gather some money to get a new MONSTER PC to do my usual experiments and mass destruction XD but for now I'm happy :P

Missing out on using a bad UI? Win 8 doesn't offer anything to me that would make it worth upgrading. I'll just switch to Linux, if MS continues with the Modern UI in the future.

Das läuft super mit Steam, wenn du ein bisschen Sahne draufsprühst
Comment has been collapsed.
Let me guess, you never used Win8 and presumed that the tiled Modern UI is the default UI for the whole operating system, right? Well guess again, Win8 desktop UI is actually 99% identical to Win7, minus the start button, which you can bring back with Start8.

I have Windows 8 and it's working perfectly with steam :)

^This.....but maybe 2-3 years in the future we'll be mad because we didn't took one.....

No it doesn't. Actually it can't be disabled.
The only way to do it is to install a third-party application that will provide some of the missing funtionality.

This guy gives a good explanation on why the UI on Win8 sucks. The OS itself is probably okay, altough plagued with all the problems that come with every new iteration of Windows. It's the UI that makes it pretty much unusable to anyone who uses more than a handful of apps.
Comment has been collapsed.
By apps I meant all applications. As in, every piece of software that you have on your computer. I've got over 100 applications right now on Win7, just after installing a dozen on Win8 it was already a jumbled mess.
Comment has been collapsed.
I mean by apps applications that you can only download at the MS Store. All other programs use the normal desktop. The apps are mainly made for tablets and not for productive working, they are the same like iPad and Android apps. I think most PC user only use the
Metro start menu (I like it), else you won't see much from Metro (or Modern UI, what it is now called).

The new Start screen is the biggest part of what makes it unusable. It's hard as hell to find your programs with it as soon as you start installing any decent amount of stuuf in there. Hundreds of jumbled tiles ia not my idea of an efficient way to find your stuff. Plus system configurations being spread all over the place and hard to reach doesn't help at all.

You are completely right about the start menu and the settings (they are not extremely spread around but not as good reachable as in previous Windows versions). I mainly like the start menu because I have my PC connected to my TV and it's nice to have a fullscreen start menu on one screen while still having other stuff on the other screen (which doesn't work that well on only one monitor). I also normally search in the start menu and don't look for the programs in the list but I can understand you reasons.

I transitioned from Win Vista to Win 8.
The OS seems more catered to "Apple" people or people who are more familiar to touchscreen type of things (iTouch, Android, etc.) The layout is pretty dam confusing at first, but it isn't so bad as you get used to it. I'm pretty ticked off that there isn't any dxdiag or secret ways to get through things, everything is thrown at you from the start so it's pretty easy access for a newbie user.
It just takes some time to get used to honestly... but if you have Win7 right now, don't bother switching. Plus as others have stated it seems to be pirated or exploited.
P.S: Never try to pirate an OS, that's kinda big

They want to dominate the world!!!! by giving it for free. My suggestion is no switch to Windows 8, for now is a bad thing, a lot of things won't work......but if you like problems you can do ;)

What doesn't work? So far I haven't come across anything that doesn't work.

i use windows 8 on my laptop, works fine with every game so far. It even compelled me to buy it for my desktop.
Better to just buy the upgrade from 7-8 for $15, knowing it will be legit forever, than use a dodgy activator knowing it will be legit only until they make an update to fix the activation.

They could pay me to install it and I still wouldn't. It's just so bad. My friend bought a laptop with it on and asked me to come rip that shit out of his laptop and give him Windows 7.
Comment has been collapsed.
All the whining is probably from the people who never tried it or only heard that it should be bad. Most people who tried it more than 5 minutes found it at least ok. When you get used with the Metro UI then Win 8 isn't that bad. I like Win 8 and will upgrade soon.

Known usability researcher Jakob Nielsen has shown in an experimental setting that there are many issues with the Windows 8 UI, he outlines his findings here. While I haven't used Win 8 myself, the article suggests that some complaints regarding the new UI are justified.
Comment has been collapsed.
Some of this can be true but everything he stated is only true for the Metro UI (e.g. he states that it has no windows, which is only true for Metro), which isn't really made for PCs. I think most users on PC wouldn't use apps much, they rather use it as start menu (which in my opinion looks better and you find programs faster). PC user won't use Metro much, when you get to the desktop you don't see anything of it and it's the same like Win 7 without a start button. He tries to compare a tablet UI and apps to a real PC OS, then it is sure that he can't say good things about it. You could try Windows 8 as trial version in VirtualBox to see what I'm talking about.

I think Nielsen's point was that the OS shouldn't come with these two interfaces at all. The very fact that Microsoft decided to include a "New UI" (Metro) was misguided in his opinion, and reading his article makes me understand why he would say that. Anyway, personally I'm not really inclined to mess with my current Mac OSX + Win 7 setup, as it's working just fine (and I'd rather spend the extra cash on more games than a new Windows).
Comment has been collapsed.
I somehow also think that a tablet UI shouldn't be on a PC but he reduces Win 8 to Metro and doesn't say anything about the real interface. He thinks that user would only use Metro to work productively, which isn't true. You can't compare a tablet UI to a normal UI for productive working. No one would use Metro for real stuff like Office, etc. Metro is made for apps and he says that Win 8 is bad just because of an interface that many people would hardly use.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think Nielsen examined the OS as it was presented, in terms of end user affordances, and from my understanding, the new UI is being pushed quite heavily. I see what you're getting at, but by the same token, you could raise the question why Microsoft bothered to include the new UI in the first place if most people will hardly use it. The argument that Win 8 would be a superior product without it seems legitimate in this context.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, that's the other question where I agree with you. MS could have more worked on other features and shouldn't just made an improved Win 7 with Metro. I will still upgrade it because of the smaller improvements for 30€ but for the normal price (which will probably be again ~100€) I would never buy it.
Comment has been collapsed.
But the way MS is pushing the OS, they put the Metro interface forward and the classic desktop as a behind-the-scene legacy compatibility. Like they wanted to get rid of of it but just couldn't yet. Plus a big part of his testing was done on a tablet, for which that UI is supposed to be meant. I get that the metro apps don't make sense on a desktop PC, but that's still what is being put forward by MS.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, MS pushes Metro too much but MS will never risk to remove the desktop, normal programs, etc. Then MS would never get people to buy that Windows, that would be the end on PCs for Microsoft. Nobody would buy a Windows without the ability to run normal programs (the only reason for me to use Windows instead of Linux is that there are more programs available).

Not whining just absolutley Hate the idea of my Pc becoming a tablet
Comment has been collapsed.
So no trial version, right? I have Windows Vista, and I like it more than Windows 8, but I guess I get some performance boost with Win 8, so I'm thinking about it. And I don't wanna buy Windows 7, because it's useless for my shitty old laptop.
Comment has been collapsed.
Which activator? I read it, and if I understand, it give you Media Center key, and you can use it as key for Windows? I just didn't like that start menu in Windows 8, so stupid, makes a work harder, but there's some program for it to get back the old start menu.
Comment has been collapsed.
Why I can't use these steps?
Once the code is in your inbox, do a search for “Add features to Windows 8” under Settings, click on it and enter the product key. Media Center will download and install, and after your system comes back from a reboot, you’ll be able to use the same upgrade product key to activate Windows.

I'm sticking with my Windows XP : uses half the amount of RAM as vista, 7, or 8 uses. Compatible with old games. 20% more fps in dx9 games.
