This is just a heads up for anyone that uses Robert Muresan's bundle game store.

I had an account there since 2015, made many multiple dozens of purchases there over 2015, 2016, and 2017. In 2018 Steam changed a bit, and I slowed my bundle purchases. Now today I decide to login and see about buying a bundle to give away and my login is invalid and resetting password says no account with the e-mail address.

So I contacted and PM'd DIG and this what they had to say:

Accounts that are inactive for over one year, are deleted along with their contents.
Otherwise our server requirements and costs keep increasing as we keep storing unused accounts.
2 reminder emails are being set out when an account has been inactive for over 1 year.
There is an additional 2-3 months of waiting period after that, and another 2 emails are being sent out once again.
After these, the accounts are removed.

To keep an account active, all you have to do is login once a year. No purchase is needed.
We also offer a feature where you can export all your keys to a CSV file and store them locally.

You can always register for a new account and continue using our services.

Except I'd never gotten any reminder emails at all so I doubt this is the case -- perhaps a special case with accounts that were as old as mine.

Regardless, I just wanted to warn everyone to make sure to archive their DIG purchases and be wary of their practices.

Happy Holidays!

Wow. I could totally understand them deleting accounts that never made a purchase, but this is just pure asshattery from them. I don't think unused accounts on a website (especially those of paying customers) take up enough server space to warrant deleting ones that have content on them, even if they haven't logged in in some time. =(

I'm pretty sure making a few purchases on the site more than outweighs the server costs for storing the small amount of text concerning you -- and making lots of purchases as many do; even more so.

Penny pinching at its worst. For sure they'll never get any more of my pennies.

I don't blame you.

Not exactly the same, but a department store did this to me a couple of years ago. I was so pissed off. The points balance that was built up there didn't amount to a whole lot, but the fact that they could just delete my purchase history etc. just because I hadn't logged in for a year annoyed me on principle. I didn't even get an email to notify me. They said "make another account." I didn't, and I never will. I might have bought stuff in their physical store since, but they did lose my custom on Christmas gifts and such that I would've bought online from them.

I had the same thing happen to me a few months ago, no way to get it back either. I never received a warning email either.

Yup, I pretty sure it's a lie -- whether on purpose or because of negligence. I actually had two accounts because I had to use a different e-mail for my developer account when we worked together on a couple bundles. Neither address got warning e-mails.

is your developer account also deleted
i assume it is, reading over the details of this thread it isn't clear...

so even with a partnership within the site, that account was also deleted
(due to storage restrictions of the server)

i just have an extremely hard time wrapping my head around deleting users because of storage restrictions imposed by a domain/server hosting company. unless this individual is running this operation from their own home and may have actual complications due to hardware limitations or location, this is such a 1996 excuse to limit user profiles

edit: if they are running it from their own house/region, they have clearly outgrown that...

Some crypto-marketplaces do the same. I was puzzled when they told me they are running out of server space and thus have to delete old accounts who didn't log in for a year.

yea, that is my frustration as i have seen this happen to users in the past
yet, those instances happened on circumstantial servers so far in that past
meaning; they were a member of, yet their membership did not entitle them
even if or ever they did pay for it, based on their usage of paid membership...

paid membership

no, your 1mb belonging to us...

And 1MB of data would be for a fairly active (hence much profitable) account. Idle accounts with no activity ever would probably be more in the range of a few KB.

It's definitely not a lie. I can't recall why i had created a DIG account since i never bought anything from there, but they did send me multiple notification e-mails about my account being deleted due to inactivity. Ofc those news were great for me because at least now i don't receive their promotional e-mails which i couldn't get rid off no matter how many times i unsubscribed from their newsletter.

That sucks. Few rows in a database aren't costing much of anything. I always save my keys to a spreadsheet immediately, I never keep keys unused on a shop. After Indie Royale, Otaku Bundle, Go Go, Cubic Bundle etc going out of business, plus humble bundle running out of keys for unrevealed gift links, I just don't trust any of them. Also should probably activate or give away keys ASAP with all of the deactivated keys out there these days. The world isn't safe for us bundle hoarders anymore. 😭

DIG always came across to me as an extremely shady site, so never ended up setting up an account (though considered it when 'KO Mech' was bundled there). Glad I listened to my gut and didn't give them any business.

That said; I think It's ok to delete accounts without purchases, but deleting ones that do have purchases or developer accounts is just wrong.

from their content_about page

STEAM keys marked as USED will be autoarchived and removed from your account after 10 days, to reduce our database volume and usage. This does not affect the functionality of the key is any way. Simply put, we just stop storing it for you.

lol, how much volume can it take to store some text.

Wow, 10 days is quick. Don't suppose it really matters though...
Anyways, in May this year I made my only purchase since 2015 - and the May purchase is still showing, but everything before that is gone.

Otherwise our server requirements and costs keep increasing as we keep storing unused accounts

Also, funny how grey markets websites are the only websites in the world where keeping a few bytes of data is deemed unsustainable. (the only other example of e-commerce website doing that that comes to my mind is G2A)

I might be wrong, but I think this was already proved to be bullshit a while back, when another website started deleting people's accounts.
Nice try, DIG.

Bump.

Is there a reason why they wouldn't send you an e-mail with all your keys before deleting your account? I remember that one of the bundle sites did that before shutting down (but I don't remember which one it was).

This

and this

is bullshit. As ShannonA81 pointed out, they could delete just the accounts that never made a purchase or that don't have any unused Steam keys (since they already are automatically purged if marked as used) and no other valuable information (remaining balance in their wallets, games listed in the trade/marketplace,...). And keeping those records amount to almost nothing (if done correctly) as other users have pointed out, especially when you're already purging some of the data (keys marked as "used").

And to export all the keys to a CSV you must log in, so there's no point at all to remind you of that when your account is already gone.

I don't use DIG, but the reason for deleting accounts sounds like BS to me.

The server costs are pretty much the same whether you have 10 accounts or 1 million accounts, it can't be more than a few kilobytes of data per user... It would be a joke if a store like them can't handle the cost of storage (can't be more than $100 a year).

Because it is bs, anyone that believes it is delusional. I'm never giving them a penny again and yet after deleting without a warning they still spam me with stupid fucking promo emails
