Dear Steamgifts Members,

today United States of America celebrate Independence Day. Our group of historians created a train full of informations about this event - and we are proud to share it with you on this special day. But July is not only about Independence of USA, and that is why our train ends on July 14th - The Bastille Day, the French National Day - a turning point of the French Revolution. So our train contains also stories related to la Fête nationale.

The stories were assembled on the train in the following order: at the beginning all about United States Celebration of Independence Day, in the end all about French Celebration of Bastille Day, in the middle all relative to other topics with similar values, such as freedom, peace, equality and independence.

At the end of the train there is a little suprise for you - the Quiz. So if you've read everything we wrote carefully enough, you may try it. Maybe you'll be lucky in giveaways we've prepared.

We've also created some Jigidis related to events we celebrate. You'll find them in the middle of the train, they will give you an opportunity to win even more games.

HERE you can start your journey with us:

We'd love to hear some feedback from you, and discussions are allowed. Please, feel free to comment, let us know what you think, how you celebrate (if you do). And don't forget to bump the thread.

I'd like to thank all of my Write History Group Members who contributed, especially db (David) - he took the whole responsibility of organisation (which is not easy). The idea of creating the train was also his, so he as an Inventor and Creator is our Hero today. Obrigado, David.

In the 16th and 17th century wealthy Europeans ate corpses thinking they'd cure them of ailments.

They even ate the remains of Egyptian mummies, which tomb raiders risked their lives to steal.

In the 15th century Romanian ruler Vlad the Impaler impaled 20,000 Ottoman Turks on long, sharp poles on the banks of the Danube.

Vlad also enjoyed sopping up his enemies' blood with bread and eating it. This disturbing practice, along with his family name of Dracula and birthplace of Transylvania, inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula.

The Four Races of the Known World as described by Ancient Egyptians - Book of Gates, rendering from Seti I's Tomb (1279 BCE).

  • The Ancient Egyptian funerary text known as the Book of Gates narrates the passage of a newly deceased soul into the next world as it passes through a series of 'gates'. This 'Book of Gates' was included on the walls of Pharaonic tombs between 1370-1130 BCE.
  • What has become so popular about this text in recent decades is the description of the four known races of the world described over and over by the ancient Egyptians. It could appear that while the Egyptians recognized themselves as a distinct race, they also recognized other races as well. This description draws a colorful depiction of a 'melting pot' society where different races from different lands appear to not only wage war, as seen in other texts, but here seen coexisting in some sort of harmony. This is simply wonderful.

African-American men were not deemed equal members of the Mormon Church until 1978.

I've learned that because of this song.
There is a part where the main character tells an african warlord:
"I believe that the Lord God has sent me here!
And I believe that in 1978 God changed his mind about black people!
You can be a Mormon!"

Also BUMP!

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) was founded shortly after the State of Israel was established in 1948. It ranks among the most battle-tested and highly-trained armed forces in the world.

The IDF's security objectives are to defend the existence, territorial integrity and sovereignty of the State of Israel; deter all of Israel's enemies; and, curb all forms of terrorism which threaten daily life.

Most soldiers in the IDF are Jewish, but the number of Christian recruits has been steadily climbing since 2012, when concentrated efforts to encourage their enlistment began.

Gal Gadot served in the Israel Defense Forces, for two years (women typically serve two years; men, three years; though the required time depends on when they join). She was given the role of combat trainer, more specifically, she taught gymnastics and calisthenics.

I definitely have a strong sense of my Jewish and Israeli identity,” she told the website Totally Jewish. “I was brought up in a very Jewish, Israeli family environment, so of course my heritage is very important to me. I want people to have a good impression of Israel.” She added, “I find that people in the U.S., especially in Hollywood, tend to have positive opinions on Israel—both Jewish and non-Jewish people alike.”

Israel is the only country where military service is obligatory for both men and women. Women constitute approximately a third of the conscripts and close to twenty percent of the standing professional army. In 2003, the military conscripted some seventy-seven percent of the cohort of eighteen-year-old Jewish men and fifty-nine percent of the cohort of eighteen-year-old Jewish women.

Female conscription is the law in Israel for all women aged 18 – 26. Women may be exempted if they are married, pregnant, or are mothers. A woman may also chose not to serve if she feels it conflicts with her religious observance. Most women who choose this option spend these years as volunteers in hospitals, old age centers, with needy children or other worthy causes. Everyone serves.

Women have been part of the Israeli military since before the founding of the State. In the Warsaw ghetto, in the partisan units fighting the nazis, and in the pre-State underground freedom fighting militia's, women were active members. Many proved themselves under fire. Women were active participants in Israel's 1948 war for independence.

In three hours on the morning of June 5, 1967, the first day of the Six-Day War, the Israeli Air Force executed Operation Focus, crippling the opposing Arab air forces and attaining air supremacy for the remainder of the war.

The entire Israeli Air Force, with the exception of just 12 fighters assigned to defend Israeli air space, took off at 7:14 a.m

In a surprise attack, the IAF destroyed most of the Egyptian Air Force while its planes were still on the ground.

By the end of the day, with surrounding Arab countries also drawn into the fighting, the IAF had mauled the Syrian and Jordanian air forces as well, striking as far as Iraq. After six days of fighting Israel claimed a total of 452 Arab aircraft destroyed, of which 49 were aerial victories and the remainder were destroyed on the ground together with the runways and airbases.

It was almost two years to the day when Malala was shot that she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She was 17 and the youngest recipient to receive it. She shared the distinguished award with Kailash Satyarthi, another children's rights activist.

To date, Malala has received over 40 awards and honors for her bravery and activism, including an honorary doctorate from the University of King's College in 2014 and a Grammy Award for Best Children's Album (for the audio book I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World) in 2015.

In 2015 an asteroid was named in honor of Malala.

Malala Yousafzai was born on 12/07/1997 in Mingora, Pakistan. As a child she became an advocate for girls' education, which resulted in the Taliban issuing a death threat against her.

On 09/10/2012 an Islamic extremist Taliban shot Malala in the head when she was traveling home from school. She survived, and has continued to speak out on the importance of education.

She was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2013. In 2014 she was nominated again and won, becoming the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

Happy Birthday Malala indeed! :-)

I admire her, she's brave to keep on going to school in a taliban infested country, she survived a point blank gunshot to the head and she keeps on fishing for education for everyone.
