F.E.A.R. franchise - paranormal experiments and such.
Indigo Prophecy (or Fahrenheit) - I really liked the beginning but later, about the halfway though the game, one thing just ruined the whole experience for me, from very interesting to dafuq? It was like that new Indiana Jones movie.
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines - a true vampire life before that Stephenie Meyer ruined it. No sparkles included.
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth - two words: H. P. Lovecraft and Cthulhu.

It seemed like the one I played was definnitely following on from the story, pretty directly too, and then something happened in the game, which I shall not spoil, but it fucking ruined the plot for me, I fucking hated the game ever since then.

No, they are non-canon. Although they follow the stories hierarchy of events, they are unnecessary and add little to nothing to the main story.

One of my favorite games. That reminds me, I have yet to finish my Malkavian playthrough

Old Game: Grim Fandango. (You can download it for free nowadays, iirc)
One of the last of the point-and-click classics of the 90s
Some of the funniest and wittiest dialogues out there
Original setting
Good plot development
Lovable characters.
Modern Game: Dead Space 1
Excellent sci-fi survival horror setting
Chills and thrills galore
Great immersion
Interesting plot development
Frenetic

Chrono Trigger and Heavy Rain are probably two of my favorite video game stories.

One day the Ps4 or Ps5 will come out and the Ps3 will be really cheap, it's a great system and would definitely be worth picking up then. Heavy Rain is a great game that does lots of stuff right and TONS of things wrong, but it's worth it for the experience, especially if the story has yet to be spoiled for you.

Metro 2033, LA Noire, Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, Mafia 2, The Witcher 1 & 2

Metro 2033 is based on a book, so... yeah it has a fucking brilliant story.
LA Noire... is from Rockstar. Well, I'm not saying all Rockstar games have an awesome story, but all Rockstar games are good in something and LA Noire's story is genius(also the face animations)

Pretty much what this guy said.
Also, the Thief series.

Depends if its new, old or if it does not matter when its from..
The overall best story (RPG) is Planescape Torment without any doubt, the lore is also very very good, lots of good reading.. other old rpgs like Baldur's Gate(2), icewind dale, etc are also super in their story..
Knights of the old republic games are also worth playing if you didnt and like SW.
of newer games, I could recommend The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav (if you like adventure games its worth playing)
I see there is alot of people already giving you good examples, such as GF, Dreamfall series etc.
Just a side note.
If you didnt play Baldur's Gate (shame on you if so) I recommend you the new Enhanced version http://www.baldursgate.com/windows.en.html there will be one for the 2nd aswell and there is also going to be a Planescape Torment EE ^^ its going to be an awesome year!

The reason I suggest people to wait for the EE of these games, is because I've had a few problems with proper resolution fixes etc. The EE is not just pretty workover but it will run perfectly on any modern computer ^^
But ye if he didnt play Plancescape Torment, he really missed out on something!!!

The GOG version works on any modern computer too. Just get the widescreen mod and that's pretty much it.

Yes I guess its not that hard, but my expierence is that some people tend to get annoyed when they have to download WS mods etc.
Still for PST it might be better to buy the original it will be some time untill the EE is out!! but BG EE is out soon.

Bastion, Portal, Half-life, etc. I love the Kingdom Hearts story but it's not for everyone. Also, Final Fantasy: Dirge of Cerberus has a great story and it's also a fun TPS. (Non-PC though D: )

365/2 is best IMO. I've only played that and 2....

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear :)
game is the same as in 1997 but with new graphics, that would not make it a NEW game, true

"...really good story that i couldn't stop playing just to see what happens in next minutes?"
The Monkey Island Games!
Would recommend you to play the 1st and 2nd game first, if you plan to play through them all, otherwise I would say jump straight into the 3rd one as it is the best in the series according to the most fans. Skip the 4th one as the controls are just horrible and only play (the 5th) Tales if you like the first three games.
Comment has been collapsed.
The first and second are both better than the third, IMO.
The fourth one plays just like Grim Fandango. The controls are not horrible - they just take some getting used to. It's very good, so play it too.
The Tales series is not so great; I agree.

I've played almost every single game that is not garbage and I can safely say that the BEST FUCKING story I've ever experienced was BY FAR Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (the first one with Darth Malak). INCREDIBLE INCREDIBLE storyline.

another one i just thought of is Spec Ops The Line.
it is a pretty standard cover based 3rd person shooter but with a truly fantastic story and excellent character development.

This is what came to mind when reading the title.
