1 Mother 3
2 (if it stays this good): The Walking Dead
3 Deus Ex (The first game in the series)
4 Bioshock 2 (not 1)
In no order:
Chrono Trigger
Bastion
Grim Fandango
Monkey Island Series
Sam and Max
Day of the Tentacle
Full Throttle
Gabriel Knight
All the Blackwell games
The Longest Journey
Red Dead Redemption
Gemini Rue
Games that people say have good story which do not:
The first Assassin's Creed game (the story stops before it gets anywhere, which makes it not even a story at all. Maybe the rest of the series remedies this?)
Planescape Torment (really interesting lore, as another poster said, but the actual plot and characters aren't that great. The game is great.)
Zelda games (they're wonderful, but thin on story)

i think Walking Dead looks and sounds like i would really enjoy it but i ended up not buying it during the summer sale because i found the idea of purchasing a game before all of it is finished/released a bit odd.
will probably buy it when episode 4/5 comes out.

This, I waited before I got Back To The Future. Totally worth the wait.

Whoa... actual plot and characters of Planescape not that great? Did we play the same game? Did you finish it? There's not many games out there with that level of philosophical exploration. The characters are also all pretty flawed in their own way, making them seem real and I found myself caring very much for them, something that I rarely experience in video games.

Yes, I finished the game. It's one of my favorite games.
Philosophical exploration = opposite of story. That's part of why the game is good, but philosophical exploration is more the direction of an essay - not a story.
We disagree on the characters though. You just described what I find the most important part of a good story, so we agree on that element. We just don't agree that it happens in the game. I think the characters are lifeless, thin, and unbelievable.

Are you insane ??? PST got some of the best characters of all time!!! even people that never played it or play PC knows about them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The plot and story is the best ever!!!! you are surely the first I've ever seen that say its not good, but maybe its because you are not into RPG!!
PST is one of the only games where I felt like the chars had a reason to be there and that I actually wanted to explore them more!!!

I don't see any full blooded RPG's on your first list (maybe we can argue about a few) but the majority of your games are pure adventure games or a cross (good) but adventure..
But I guess we simply disagree about the Chars, you seem to conclude that the story is a masterpiece.. still calling the chars lifeless, thats just ... well I am almost lost for words tbh.. ohh well
Simple minds... simple pleasures...

Mother 3 (my #1 game on the list) is a traditional JRPG. Planescape is one of my favorite games, though I prefer Fallout 1 and 2 in the same genre.
I didn't conclude that anything about the story was great, much less a masterpiece. I have no idea what you're talking about. If you can't read what you're replying to, maybe you're the one with a simple mind? (Indirectly-related: I teach college English and creative writing.)

I didnt say all your games, I said we could argue about a few (but the majority are not pure RPG's).. I also said you are mad to say PST have bad chars, but thats an opinion (your the only and first to post your view however) but thats ok. no point in arguing, opinions are opinions...
Atleast you agree with the Story lets leave it at that ^^

Mass Effect, Monkey Island, Portal, Dead Space, and Fable all have stories within individual games. Monkey Island in particular is a complete game that doesn't even need a sequel at all. Assassin's Creed does not do that. It has the tiniest start of a story within the first game and provides no closure\satisfaction at that point.

actually, mass effect does end with a cliffhanger each game, just like assassin's creed. The first game ended with the revelation of the coming of the reapers but stopped, mass effect 2 picked up with the entrance of the collectors and ended with the revelation of the reapers/protheans, and mass effect 3 picked up with the fullscale attack of the reapers. Prologue, body, epilogue. Assasssin's creed is doing the same thing except that it is extending the body o several chapters. The first game is the prologue that introduces us to the characters and background lore, the rest of the II seriescan be considered body, and I bet III willbe the start of, if not itself, the conclusion/ epilogue.

Well, the story in SotC is kind of what a painting is to a book. It's all a bit up to the player to interprit most of the goings on. But it's well worth the effort.

"the story in SotC is kind of what a painting is to a book."
Holy fuck, you represented the SotC's story in a way I never even thought.
Well SotC is named as a contemporary odyssey and I really think it's very unique even for a "painting/book"

I'm not sure about HALO. I love all the back story and the universe as a whole, but I hold a grudge against Bungie for not making the Bees ARG for Halo 2 connect to the universe better.

Chrono Trigger.
Old game (SNES), but nonetheless one of the best ones out there.

Best game stories I've experienced are Dead Space 2 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)
Metal Gear Solid Series
Planescape Torment, along with Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Fallout 1 and 2.
Vampire Redemption, and Vampire Bloodlines.
I might be stretching a bit here, but the first three Monkey Island games were phenomenal.
The Dig (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, i still remember spending hours trying to figure out what was going on when i was younger)
Kingdom Hearts series (PS2 only, then some more games on the DS and other plattforms, if you can skip the disney characters, which to be honest they're not that important, the games story is great)
First and second Silent Hill
Gabriel Knight 3
looks up
Damn, long post.
