There's no hope, there is nothing you can do, the backlog is too strong.

It did not work for me :( Being poor for a long time gives you some bad habits that are hard to break (people who have been poor tend to be more easily lured in by "great deals", as they can get a luxury that they would not usually be able to afford, and well, bundles...)

About 20 games I think in the queue. And many more that are not completed. Since Steam, three things are certain: death, taxes and backlog.

I will just leave my backlog to my children.

The reason I have a backlog was because I was so unorganized with my playing. One day it would be game x, then game y, then new release AAA... I "tried them" but never played them. When I wanted to go to game x after playing y I would have forgotten the games mechanics. I recently took up achievement hunting and by gosh I've been cutting that backlog much better than before. I know a lot of people don't care about achievements but neither did I. :O I've brought my completion ratio from like 32% to almost 50. That's just what's worked for me though.

I also try to give priority to games won here on SG, I've gotten 100% on a few of them. Still have more to go, who doesn't want a winner of their giveaway to enjoy a game?

+1 That total games beaten percentage is good motivation.

That combined with games won here, has cleaned my library up :)

That's a good approach and kinda what I do although I never spelled it out exactly. I don't really care about getting every achievement I'm just happy if I can keep my overall completion percentage at 50%.

You've kind of inspired me to try this. It's hard for me to scruffy finish a game when there's so many others i also want to play. Did you go back and 100% games that you had finished before but not got all achieves? What about games without achievements?

I do give priority to games with achievements. However it's good for not jumping on sales sometimes and making the backlog bigger. If I see a game has no achievements I'll usually pass on it until I have room or time for it :P

Best way to get out of a backlog is have them all removed by asking Steam support

I trimmed my backlog to a list of 30 or so games called "Next to Play". These are the ones I am most interested in (Like Alien: Isolation).

Then I make rules. Only have 10 games installed total and when Im done with a game I pick on from the next to play list. Once it's installed, it doesn't come off until Im finished. So if I really want to play a new game on that list, i need to finish what I already have installed first.

Surprisingly effective. Beat about 20 games this year already.

But... what if there are games that you can't really "finish" (like total war)?

But that is a pretty good way of getting rid of a backlog.

Funny thing: I have Empire: Total War on my next to play list and I currently have Cities Skylines installed. Both are games that you never "finish". I guess you just need to set limits for yourself in that case. I put in 35 hours into Cities so far. I guess I'll uninstall it when I lose interest and then pick up Total War. I was the same way with Sim City 4, I would play it like mad, drop it for a few months and then come back to it.

Of course, I make exceptions for hyped games or games on my wishlist that I really want to play. Those go to the top of the backlog.

Here's a list of games I beat this year using this method.

I play 'through' 1-3 games per week, so that's 52-156 per year... Which means that I might catch up with my backlog in 19 years given the best case scenario. Let's say that half of my carefully collected games are trash (a proper assumption when considering how bundle addicted I am) and I won't play them, that's still over 9 years. I guess it's better not to think about it and just enjoy gaming ;)

54 games in the backlog, almost double that in my wishlist.

-sigh-

Are we counting games on consoles too? Then add 5 more to backlog and 3 more to the wishlist.

You really don't want to now the number of games in my backlog.... more than 1000. That's including console games too that I can't play because I don't have the system needed. If you only count PC games, well, about 400 or so :( My children or my grandchildren are the ones who would have to end that backlog xD
