Today, one of my beloved cats, my dear little Lee, fell asleep forever. He was sick and the vet said he could not help him anymore. My mum and my brother took him to the vet while I stayed home with my other cat.
Lee didn't have to be alone in his last moments, I only wish, I could have been with him as well. But I'm glad that not only for me, but also for the rest of my family, our cats aren't just pets, they are beloved family members.
Lee was sick and me, my family, the vet... we all thought it was better to let him go instead of make him suffer for the sake of having some more days with him.
For 12 years, he made my life better every day. He purred all the time, he was the sweetest cat, never hissed or was aggressive. He was clever and knew how to open doors. He loved unconditionally.
I miss him already and I would do everything to see him happy and healthy one last time... but I know that it would have been selfish to make him endure a treatment that would not cure him. He would have been suffering so... goodbye, my beloved little kitten. I'll never forget you.

I know, for some here, pet's might not be as important. But please, allow me to grief. For me, my cats are important, they are family and I just need a little place to be sad and to cry.
Thank you.

Edit:
You all moved me so much with your kind words. Thank you so, so much.
I'll try to answer all of you. Just not today. I still try to realize that he's truly gone and everytime I see his brother, or the places he used to sleep, I start to cry again.
I wish none of us would have to say goodbye to a beloved one and I'm sorry to hear that so many of you also lost some friends already. At the same time, I'm glad that all of them had a loving family and I'm sure they were very happy.

Edit:
Dear flutesong made a Giveaway. Thank you so much, that's very sweet of you hug
In memory of Lee and our other four-legged friends and family members.

My condolences :(
I also lost the cat I was growing up with last year due to sickness and old age.
Like you said it's better not to let them suffer just for a little bit more time...someday the time just has come.
Just cherish all the beatiful memories and once the pain is over, be happy that you got to spend so much time with such an wonderful being :)

I feel your pain, Soraiah. You are absolutely right - they are more than just pets. Really family members for me too. I also lost two cats - in 2005 (mother cat) and 2009 (her son). They were 15 and 17 years accordingly.

My condolences...

I really feel your loss, I lost my cat last saturday (I still can't change my profile picture of him), and I missed him so much since then.

Just never forget him, as I'll never forget mine.

My condolences.

Why would you change it if I may ask? In a way, it's honouring.

As a person who holds animals in higher regard than any human being, this hurts to even read.
It seems to me you considered Lee your friend, and not just "a pet".
Mourn and cry all you need. I wish you well stranger 💖

I’m sorry for your loss. :’(
Pets are more than just companionship.
Try and take it easier on yourself and remember to eat/drink.
It’s hard losing your buddy, just make sure that you don’t forget about yourself while you grieve.

It is heart-wrenching. Try to think of the happy memories and find comfort in knowing that he was so loved.

I know how how important pets are, as you can see in my avatar. I love my bunnies with all my heart.
A few years ago I had to let one of my bunnies go to sleep too on a way too young age. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. (well, tell the vet to do it). But you and your family did the right thing. The cuties shouldn't have to suffer if there is no way out.
My condolences.
Take care <3

He is now at cat heaven and runs around chasing heavenly mouses.
I am sorry for your loss and i hope you can find a way to fill the place your beloved pet have left empty.
PS.
It does not matter if others think that pets are not important. The people, things, creatures that make us happy are the things that matter and that is all.

Awww, I'm very sorry to hear about your pet. It's really hard saying goodbye to them. Lost my dog on 1st Feb, he was 17 years old, so I do understand how you feel. They're not just a pet, they really are a member of your family.

I feel with you...
My beloved cat passed away 1 month ago. He became the same age as your cat...
To me, he truly was like family.
I know exactly what pain you are going through!!!
Even though he is no more, I will keep the memory of our wonderful times and cherish them.
Stay strong!

I'm so very sorry for the loss of your dear family member. We have cats here at home and it hurts so very much when one leaves us. I lost the cat I was bonded to just before the holidays. The other 2 rescues are lonely without him. I hope to find another rescue cat soon.
You did the best that you could for him and made the right decision to not let him suffer. I hope your other cat gets through this adjustment too. Remembering all the great times you shared helps. Hugs to you.

Mein Beileid. Ich hatte auch mal eine Katze, die altersbedingt irgendwann so krank wurde, dass sie eingeschläfert werden musste. Daher weiß ich, wie traurig und schmerzvoll diese Erfahrung ist.
