You should try Spelunky

  • Spelunky
  • Paranautical Activity (pretty much a quake-style shooter with mechanics very similar to binding of isaac)
  • Risk of Rain
  • Legend of Dungeon
  • Delver
  • Dungeon of the Endless
  • Eldritch
  • Steam Marines
  • Bionic Dues (sort of a roguelike but...also sort of different)

Try to at least check out both the store page for each of them and the community feedback in the discussions section of the community hub for each game and then pick what you feel would most likely suit you.

For what knowing genres? It's not hard to research

Spelunky has randomization (levels, enemies, items) and permadeath, two of the key aspects of Roguelikes. No, it's not turn-based, which is why some people refer to it and games like it (eg. BoI, Rogue Legacy) as Roguelike-lite, but they're still part of the Roguelike sub-genre.

If every developer followed the tenets of a genre to the letter, there would be no innovation and games would suck.

"Spelunky has randomization (levels, enemies, items) and permadeath, two of the key aspects of Roguelikes."
Yes, but Spelunky is a Platformer with randomization and that's it, Permanent Death is an RPG term because the genre relied on the feature.

Platformers like Spelunker (the game Spelunky is inspired by) already had permanent death, but it wasn't anything major since this was already normal in the genre since it's birth. Yes, platformers (and other genres) now use saves, but that doesn't change the fact that the genre doesn't need to rely on it.

And that's the huge difference here.

But whatever, apparently it's wrong to know if a game fits the genre or not.

"If every developer followed the tenets of a genre to the letter, there would be no innovation and games would suck."
I didn't even say anything about this. You're bringing random topics into the conversation and you're accusing me of smoking crack.

Neither is Rogue Legacy, Binding of Isaac, or FTL, but we list them under "roguelikes" cause they share some game mechanics that were inspired by roguelikes. Call them roguelites then or whatever if it bugs you, but Spelunky is pretty clearly a good recommendation for the OP if he likes the games he listed.

Awesome deal :)

It doesn't inclued 'all' the megadrive/genesis games on Steam though. The two Toejam & Earl games, and Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine aren't in the huge pack.

Even better then, though make sure it is for Steam if that matters.

Plus, if it is like when I grabbed it, its the 50 game collection. There is 58 total. They will lack the Sonic games (including Mean Bean Machine) and both Toejam & Earl games.

Get risk of rain if you have no need for spare time. You will forget trivial things like 'outside' and 'food'.

Ok, didn't see Teleglitch on the list -- it is awesome, currently my favorite game on steam. Also, it is in the Indie Gala Limited Bundle for $3.50 and comes with 7 other steam games. The bundle did drop to $1.99 earlier this week, but has since jumped back up, and honestly, still worth it at $3.50 for Teleglitch alone.

Lots of replayability, semi-randomized levels, crafting, and the fast pace of a top-down shooter. There's a lot to love about this game.
