Not odd at all, that's how hyperlinks works by default - if you don't give it the protocol part of a URL it assumes it's a local url relative to the current position. These days most places/forums/software guess/add the "http://" part automatically though, which is why people have gotten used to not having to add it.
So in the future if the problem arises in some other place, now you know why; they have outdated forum software. :D
