Anyone know why Windows 8 is far far cheaper than Windows 7, I've been offered Windows 8 for $15 few times. the only things that hold me is because my laptop driver didn't support Windows 8. Any idea?

Don't bother to reply if you are going "Inb4 Windows 8 sucks dick".

D:

But no, really. Are you sure it's the whole thing you're being offered, or just an upgrade to Windows 8 from 7?

Sorry, I mean 7. fix'd. And I've been offered a clean install.

That's to get people to upgrade ASAP and buy from the Windows store, obviously. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand it's a piracy countermeasure.

My thoughts exactly. If the OS is launched at a low price, you get higher conversion rates quickly

Who offered it to you? They'll install it for you? It's an original copy or a pirated OEM? Or a modded version filled with malware?

It was a walmart promotion here in the us for buying certain computers

Because Microsoft really wants people to move to Windows 8. By giving a low introductory price, they catch more of the market share than if it was it's normal price (and what it will be after this introductory period is over) of $199.

That could very well be the reason why. Seems logical enough to me.

Exactly correct, and the fact that it simply isn't selling. People who already have Win7 would rather stay on 7 rather than switch to an OS with a tablet interface. MS seriously miscalculated so they are blowing Win8 out at bargain prices.

Yeah, that's what i'm using right now. I've bought Windows 8 for $16 and clean installed it on pirated Windows 7. I dont know why Microsoft did such a campaign but if they didnt, i would have been using a pirated Windows 8 now i guess.

Because 8 is very unpopular and hardly selling at all. Microsoft has repeatedly "accidentally" created ways to get it for free even, and they still can't move it.

People don't want 8, even for free. It is less popular than Vista.

Don't do it. Windows 8 has a ton of shit. It may be faster and lighter, but the Win7 is the best for me.

I'll not go to the Windows 8, never!

The differences in performance are minimal but win 7 has a better interface for a pc(in my opinion).

I'm on Windows 8 and still have the same interface as I had on Windows 7. I Barely use the ModernUI and don't have to at all if I don't want to.

I thought the same thing, until I actually got it. All I had to do was install something to get the Start bar back, and now it's just like Windows 7 except I can do a full reboot in about 10 seconds.

And then you'll need to install some software and 2 months later it'll take the same time as the Windows7.

Better for you? Maybe, but how do you know Windows 7 is better for warheart1990. Sometimes, we have to look a little further than our own use case.

I just got a few days ago Win8 and i must say it's nice, also it has no problems running apps and game, even older games.

I'd think they went with such a low price because people didn't want to switch from Win7, not many liked the new UI, the concept of mobile+desktop OS in one etc. So MS just lowered the price for early Win8 adopters who are also owners of less than 6-months old Win7-powered computers. It will stop being cheap past January.

I hated the tile interface. Yes, it's just one click from the desktop, but it's completely unnecessary. I found myself hating Win8 and wishing for the Start bar again. I wouldn't do it. Thank God it wasn't my computer I was using.

While i won't upgrade to Win8, my friends brother in law has Win8 Laptop, guess what? Install Classic Shell, problem solved, you don't have to use Metro. Though i don't understand why Microsoft forced Metro on Desktops, it's not only terrible but also tedious to use.

I've only seen the $15 as an upgrade offer for laptops bought late last year. Normal upgrade price is $40. I can't answer why you've been offered a full version for $15 multiple times. Probably has to do with your wonderful personality or rocking body.

As for why the generally lower than Windows 7 price, well, I it's a promotional price to get more people to transition to Windows 8. Windows 7 had family packs (3 upgrades) for $120.

Wait for now, Im using Windows 8. For me it perform better than Win7, but now I see it's still to early to switch (I have it for free from my University, so why not). It's not that bad, but I would advice to wait for Service Pack 1 since it still have few problems, they are not major but sometimes annoying.

A lot of people complaining about the Metro UI, personally it took me like 1 day to get used to it.

I'm rather suspicious of W8, it's annoyingly different plus I'm pretty sure half the stuff won't be able to work (I'm not just talking games, but drivers as well) on it and I already have trouble with W7 and had to download a dll that lets me change ownership of folders (so I can't actually work and copy stuff like I want to and not like I'm a child and need everything babyproofed).

Maybe because it is such a drastic change to the look of the OS (obviously as it's aimed at touch-screens) so MS need to get it out and get people familiar with it. I'm guessing that's the reason why they disabled the Start button, so people are forced to get used to the Metro screen.

Win 8 is cheaper than Win 7 because the kernel redesign and removal of many components Microsoft included for free which you will now have to pay for [Not many really mattered anyway and were hardly if ever used].
People keep complaining because they do not like the Modern UI, I never even use it anyway due to classic shell, so operation is really no different for me except it is a little bit faster.
Just like in life, most folks are hypercritical, hypocritical & afraid of change.

you may be right but try to eat spaghetti with knife only. Because thats what touch GUI (metro) in Win8 is for Desktop PC and power users

Comment has been collapsed.

Like I said, I don't use the tile GUI (Modern, not Metro btw), I boot to desktop and have start button & everything thanks to Classic Shell.

I did get used to the Modern UI after a day, but it sucks without a touchscreen.

And it isn't that hard to eat spaghetti with a knife, I have done it a few times.

I've used Windows 8 since I got my Samsung 830 128 GB. It's nice, classic shell makes it all the more worth it. Though I know a few people don't really mind the start menu.

Actually most drivers should be supported on Windows 8 mainly because it can use the same drivers as Windows Vista/Windows 7.

Windows Vista SP1 is essentially Windows 7: 0.5.

Though the 15 dollar price tag is reserved for upgrading from a Windows 7 install, which I did. Don't uninstall W7 prior to Windows 8, you'll make it really hard for yourself compadre.

there will be no Windows 9 mate. Next to come is Windows 8.1 codename blue. Microsoft changed release system for one similar to Apple or Linux. So all you will get are updates each year or 2 years. Paid one that is. So for blue service pack you will pay. Welcome in the era of software DLC's :)

It's so cheap because microshit knows it is fcked OS made in rush. To be exact it is Win 7 with remade shell and fixed bugs. So taking full price would be rip off.
