Recommendation: buy Civilization IV and skip Civilization 5.

  1. 4 is a better game.*
  2. 4 has many excellent (might as well be official expansions) mods. Civ 5 has mods, but they're not comparable.
  3. 4 has a lower price than 5 even though it's better.

Just thought I'd point these things out to anyone who hasn't researched the games yet and was interested in buying the best current Civ game during the summer sale.

*Google "Civ 4 vs 5" if you want to know what's better about it. You might disagree after you do that, but I promise there are good reasons to consider it better, depending on what sort of person you are.

Cheaper? Then just go for civ3.

And I'm not sure if Civ4 better, but Civ5 still has expansions and such added to it.

mods? well civ5 has steam workshop support.

Civ 4 is much better than 3, so that doesn't make much sense.

Civ 5 expansions didn't fix it enough to make it as good as 4.

Civ 5 mods aren't comparable to Civ 4 mods, overall.

some of civ 5's expansions are were things they had in civ 4 and civ 4 also has a bunch of expansions.

Civ 2 & 4 are the best in the series so far imo

contra 4: giant stack of doom.

Yep, I bought 5 a while ago for that reason alone.

That's true, but comparatively minor in my opinion.

Well, that's just like your opinion man. How about telling us why you think Civ4 is better than 5? I just bought Civ5 Gold anyways. No matter which way you slice it, a Civ game will always be a great game, and a bane to your sleep and coffee stash.

Agreed.

I didn't go into detail because it's so easy to Google. I edited my post a bit in response to what you said.

+1
I am actually liking the more streamlined everything. I'm a gamer in my 30s and having it set up like it is gives more quality time with the game when I get time to play it, I feel.

For me, it seemed like Civ 5 kind of glossed over a lot of the interesting features that I enjoyed in 4 in favour of being more streamlined! Although that isn't necessarily a bad thing for everyone, and to be fair I enjoyed Civ 5 a lot anyway... :P

They're both great games, yes.

Oh this argument has been going on since Civ5 was released. Everyone knows Civ 4 is better..... :D

I noticed Civ 5 is selling much better on Steam right now than 4, so I put this hoping someone who didn't know yet would notice before buying.

I've been playing only Civ V, bought all the expansions . Look I don't want to argue, but people say that with the new expansion known as "Brave New World" it even tops Civ IV.

If you ask me, than it's simply one of the Greatest Games In Human History.

To quote a reviewer I agree with: "The best thing about Brave New World is it finally capitalizes on one of Civilization V's main goals: provide multiple and equally viable routes to victory. Culture and diplomacy no longer feel less valuable than science and military might. However, it's almost like you're paying $30 for fixes and alterations. [...] The expansion is no doubt substantial, but it's also paying for sins of the past."

I haven't been able to find any critics/professionals that say the expansion makes the game better than IV.

Going with that logic, you shouldnt even buy Civ 4? Why you ask? Because it only got good with its expansions. It sucked before they were released.

That's a very uncommon opinion you have about it sucking without the expansions. Besides, the expansions for 4 are very cheap (not $30 as I pointed out about just ONE expansion for Civ 5), so that hardly matters.

I vote for Civ 2. I own retail version and it is awesome.

If we're going oldschool, Civ 1 is my favorite old one. It's really hard to not take another turn, every time. Out of everything, Alpha Centauri is the one I have fondest feelings for, though you can essentially play it with a Civ IV mod as well.

It's obvious that Civ4 is better but Civ5 Gods&Kings with slightly different mechanics is surely worth checking out.

I like both. They are completely different games to be honest. I prefer 5, but 4 is still a great game

I bought Civ V and Civ III (I played it before and I like having games also on Steam; it's pretty awesome though, graphics are awesomely old)

Imma let you finish but Civ V has cards, which makes it better than Civ IV by default.

civ 5 is easier and prettier on the newcomer, so it can sell better and appeal more people than 4
other than that, i agree with much of what you said, i mean, if i were to choose one game to go on a deserted island, it would be civ 4. Tough MAFs get annoying sometimes.

With the both expansions, CiV5 is far better than CiV4 in my opinion. Even though only Gods & Kings is needed, I think.

Well, I prefer Civ5 with DLCs because it finally gave my pacifist side something to do at around 400 turn :) .

And it works more smooth thanks to no AI building 100th unit per city to defend it...

But yeah, unless you can get it from Russia I'd say get Civ4 first and wait until Winter Sale for price drop on BNW/Civilization 5 Platinium Edition.

I still prefer V over IV. But that doesn't make it sensible to pay full price for V. And IV is still a fantastic game.
