for me, long corridors and photos that appear suddenly

The jump scares. If there aren't any then I don't feel paranoid and then im not scared.

Jump scares (I don't react well to sudden loud noises of any kind haha) and when a huge scary looking thing fucking lumbers at you and all you have is an iron pipe or a baseball bat. Also one thing that is both the reason why I love and hate the Silent Hill series is that it does the creepy ambient atmosphere SO well. You hear little odd sounds that aren't actually caused by anything but you get tricked into thinking they are, and then you get this constant feeling that there's something behind you or hiding behind that door and you're just going to get raped by a bunch of faceless ghouls and oh man I just get creeped out way too easily haha.

I don't like most modern horror games. Too much cheap scare bullshit.

jumpscares. cheap as fuck. couldn't play through doom 3 because of it.
but I do enjoy games like amnesia or penumbra. More fear/horror stuff, less scares.

Doom 3 is the scariest game ever made. Also one of the best games.

I didnt like the in yo face attitude of the game, it was annoying as hell, just as I picked up ammo, something jumped out of the dark.

It stops scaring after about 10 minutes of gameplay, you just KNOW when and where the next thing will jump and it just becomes annoying.

I hate that my characters can do intricate stuff with theirs hands during the puzzle stage, but can't bitch slap whatever jumps at me

Everything

Why would/should I play a horror game when I can be playing something else much more bright and lively with my friends online (or single player). I just can't bear the music and the atmosphere it makes. Any other horror hater person will understand me.

Jump scares.

At some point, in Doom 3, after a few levels, i could easily predict where something would appear out of nowhere. It can be effective sometimes, but if you keep using it becomes a guessing game rather than a scary thing... it has become a joke... :/

It's easy to make things pop out of nowhere. But creating a terrifying atmosphere is much harder (and also much more rewarding).

jump scares, that's the only thing i cant deal with, i like creepy atmosphere and darkness etc, i just cant deal with jump scares :/ for example the beginning of cry of fear- nearly fell off my seat :/

Also scary noises, ear rape and noises like when you are being chased in amnesia creepy as hell :/

I don't like the cliche things. For example, the moments, when lights go out. It'd be more scary, if you didn't have any mobile light sources, but you always have something. "Oh, the lighs went out." switches on the flashlight you just found/always kept with you in your whole life

I don't like the jump-scare things, like suddenly someone screams or a door slams, etc. I prefer the psychologically distressing games. :D

You want to see what's wrong with horror games? Play Dead Space. It basiclly throws them in your face every 5 seconds

Most horror games aren't scary but the most commonly used 'tactic' is jump-scares.

If they made most of the 'horror' games genuinely scary, I'd like them more.

The fact that they are scary. I just don't get the point of playing or watching a horror game or movie.
[EDIT] Even worst: Being scared as fuck while walking through a long, dark passage just to find out there wasn't any jump scares.

Repetitive gameplay and puzzles that make no sense whatsoever. That's what I hate about most horror games.

also, most modern horror games are "scary," but I wish there was one that was just really fucking Lars Von Trier style unsetteling.

the closest I've ever come was spec ops: the line
