I like it, finally some progress!
Meh, I don't like it.

Beautiful
Whole steam feels and looks more polished.. They could touch up activity feed and profile, too.
Then Ill be a happy guy..

Interesting concept (totally not a Discord ripoff), although incredibly bugged right now, so much that it feels more like a pre-alpha than a beta.
I wonder if they're actually gonna implement group chats in the app once it works properly...

Still severely bugged and there are some changes(like no longer being able to reach profiles with a single click) they should roll back, but I do like the general direction this is going in.

I'm just hoping that either they don't mess up the pidgin messenger plugin or that it gets updated with it. Have history there in txt mode and also all my other chat clients. All I want is that they make newer messengers non-steam friendly :p
(And invisible mode kinda worked here as well but it's good that they decided to make it available to the public.)

EDIT: Can now scroll back to load up to two weeks of chat history. Okay, I guess we're not there yet.. Who knows what horrible things could happen if we could save chat history locally..

New chat is entirely incompatible with existing chatting Steam protocols, ASF/ArchiBoT will need updates as well. Right now it works because Valve keeps compatibility layer for time being, but I expect it to stop working entirely the moment this goes stable.

And it's doubtful they'll make it any easier for developers to make such plugins. The whole industry (not just gaming) wants to have a messenger of their own and yet none ever thinks that you might end up with a dozen messengers all running at the same time producing dozens of different chat-windows..

I don't like the interface. It's trying to be like all chat and messaging apps and stuff in some way. I like the simple current design but hey at least they are getting us some nice features

Mmmm, if only there was another status a half step above invisible mode where you can appear online but hide that you are in game.

Finally some updates. Steam chat barely changed for many years!

I like it so far. Looks more organized and I like the ability to put chats at the top for more convenience. Also just noticed the chat history. Finally!

Ah yes, Steam. It's like Sky really isn't it? Too big, too much of a monopoly to care about their customers. Why make modern things when archaic crap is cheaper, it's not like your customers are spoilt for choice :P

"We realised that most of our users switched to using Discord instead our chat. So, now we copy Discord now."
A step forward, definitely. Not sure if it will bring back people from Discord though. The new chat does not seem to bring a single feature Discord didn't have for ages already, and Discord has integration with more places, including Twitch. Steam's only advantage is its own emotes, but I rarely see anyone actually use them in chat, opposed to Twitch emotes.

Bound to happen eventually.

Discord "borrowed" their entire design from Slack after all, down to miniscule things like font choices. At least Steam is putting their own spin on it. The design only the same in very broad strokes.

Ironically, this makes me far more likely to switch to Discord. The entire benefit of Steam chat, its many issues aside, was that it wasn't Discord. If it's going to be Discord anyway, I'd rather use the functional, responsive, readable version of Discord.

I think this is a step in the right direction. Haven't tried it thoroughly myself ((yet)), but I think they're doing at least better than usual.

I've been wanting an invisible mode since I first started using Steam.

Hey, you know how Steam gives all your friends a pop-up notification when you start playing a game if you don't have your chat set to "offline"? Does it do this if your chat is on but marked as invisible? I'd test it myself but I don't have a friend-with-a-computer handy.

If anyone wants the old chat back, start Steam with the "-nofriendsui" command-line parameter or add it to your shortcut.

Steam.exe -nofriendsui

or

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -nofriendsui

-nochatui -nofriendsui in the end of "target" url in the shortcut properties reverts to the old style (I just added another one for ppl since you didn't mention it^^)

I tried using both "-nochatui -nofriendsui" and just "-nofriendsui", but didn't see any difference, so I included the simpler form. I could've missed something.

That's unfortunate of cause, though Valve is not responsible for your third-party skins to work.
Let's hope that the creator of your skin will update it soon.^^

Well, sure Valve is not responsible for 3rd-party skins, however they do provide a skinning mechanism and they should know better than breaking it so fast that skin developers don't have a chance to update their skins before release ^^
It's still (mostly) usable though, so I guess I'll wait...

I never use air skin, i use Metro skin and work well with latest update (with a little patch from Metro's Dev). But, here from the air skin's dev. Hope this can help you. 🙂

Ugly piece of crap. Looks all over the place, I find it extremely hard to follow the messages, default font size is too big and small font size is too small. The placement of interface elements is awful as well. The good thing about the old chat was that it was, well, a chat. The new one is some kind of aberration with tons of features I don't need. Gonna use the "-nofriendsui" workaround for now, but there should be an option to revert to old version.

Yep, looks way better than the old one. New functionalities are great. Although now when you hover your mouse over someone, their "profile" pops up way too fast on the left. It's annoying to scroll down your friends list because of it. Gifs are also not playing, instead only showing a "picture" of them. I don't know if that's intended or not, but it doesn't seem to be. It seems gifs should play properly.

Ok I got it working. While both tabs are on the taskbar, unpin the older one and pin it directly from the new tab.

I did it differently before and it didn't work. I closed all Steam related apps, unpinned it from taskbar, went to Windows search and found Steam and pinned it from there. This didn't work. Now it worked after pinning it directly from the "new" tab that opens in the taskbar when you run Steam while unpinning the older one.
