I'm pretty sure many of the Steamgifters who were born in the 80s had their first video game experiences playing the Original Game Boy.
I still remember Christmas 1989 (or was it 1990? :D) when I got my Game Boy with an Tetris cartridge and couldn' t stop playing.
Over the next years I started collecting a few nice games which I still fondly remember. Most of the times you couldn't save your games, you always had to check your batteries, the display was monochromatic, but nonetheless I had lots of fun playing the games.

So, this puzzle is dedicated to my Game Boy collection. I chose ten games I owned and really loved to play back in the days. If you can guess all of them (titles as found on German/English Wiki are correct), you gain access to a train consisting of a recent bundle. This time, screens were taken off Youtube vids, so you shouldn't be able to use Google to search for the images. ;-)

The puzzle is LEVEL 1+ and ends on December 2nd on 19:09 German Time.

I don't know if hints will be necessary, so tell me, if it's too hard to solve and I will try to help.

Donkey Kong (the hidden remake) is still a wonderful game... That I bought 3 times so far because of failing internal batteries.

I remember (and still play occasionnaly) a lot of other wonderful action-puzzle games (Rubble Saver, Monster Max, Moguranya, After Burst...).

But the real truth is that, a brick grey Gameboy running Tetris has never, ever left my crapper, wherever I have lived, for the past 20 years.

What an hommage!

Keep trying, it's really not too hard. If I would have used another screenshot (of a non water-themed level), it would have probably been too easy.

It was a game released in 1990 (NA)/1991 (EU), perhaps I will post a few more hints in the next days. ;)

I didn't own this one, but also remember playing it.
Instead, I had another Mickey Mouse- themed game

Have 50+ GB games, but man that took hell more time then i thought... 4,5,6 were difficult (and 9 kinda, cuz i messed up the right writing, i guess) - and 10 until i looked a tiny bit more carefully - Swimming Dogs, what insanity lol (shouldnt do that kinda stuff around 1 am at night :D)

But thanks for making my head explode, that was fun :D

Nr. 2 is still a favorite, played it around a year ago last time ;)

Oh ... and no mega man? shame on you!

I owned Mega Man II (and Mega Man III on NES), but thought it might have been too difficult which part of the series is seen on the screenie.
I'm surprised that you thought 4 and 6 were difficult as both were very popular and also newer parts of the series were released, but one can't know all the games on first sight. ;-)

10: LOL - I think I made a good choice posting a more difficult screenie of this game. But if I would post a link to the soundtrack of this level, probably anyone would know which game it is. :-)))

I still use my GBA regularly. Every now and again I can find a game boy cartridge at a thrift store or garage sale.

Bought Link's Awakening DX some months back for $5.

Game Boy...
Got the one of my brother. It was broken, the speaker didn't work anymore.

Super Mario Land I once made to playthrough 3 and then the batteries died. FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUU
Almost breaking highscore on Tetris (compared to family & friends) and batteries giving up. FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUU
Double Dragon, finally made it to last level and battery says no. FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUU

New generations already whine about hard rogue-likes like The Binding of Isaac. Back then you didn't really even complain about this "unfair" game reset. Not to mention many of the first popular games didn't even had any saves. If you were lucky the game provided codes to jump to certain levels.

I feel with you, this also happened to me more than often back in the days! :-D
Nonetheless, we started a new run (with new batteries) 5 minutes later (later, having a battery pack, it was a little easier)

Seems I have problems with Q10. I tried 1, 2 and 3 (full titles).

And to be very picky, the main character's first appearance was not on the original Game Boy.

Make sure you are using the title for the Gameboy game. The Gameboy Color had games in the series using another title, and those don't count.

I don't know what you mean. The protagonist never appeared in original game boy games and I played one of these games a lot.
Edit: Explained my train of thought on the GA as I don't want to spoil solutions in here.

All the games here are Gameboy games.

You might want to look up the series on Wikipedia and check which ones were release for handhelds. :P

You are right, sorry, I feel stupid now. I just looked at my ole games. Damn my brain didn't really allowed the thought that a character would appear on previous plattforms after his first appearance was on a more recent plattform.

I actually have exact this game. >.< (In a yellow case rather than standard gray.)

Now I am stuck at games I don't know [3, 7], the real challenge begins. :-)

7 shouldn't be too hard using Google if you search for what you see..
For 3 and 5 I will probably release some hints later, as a few people seem to have problems with them.

Oh no, I already solved the puzzle. I was aware this game must be older than Wishbone, that's why I was frustrated. When I sat back from the screen 2 feet, I saw which character it really was.

That was great, just the right level of challenge! I mostly got by from knowing other games from the same series and figuring out the titles they had on the Game Boy.

Thank you for setting all this up for us!
