I don't know where to put this, so I'm just going to put this in General. If there's a problem, please tell me.

So I just got scammed, I gave two 5 dollar steam wallet codes for a payday 2 GOTY key that I should have gotten if the trade went as normal.
The guy contacted me first by adding me as a friend on steam, saying that he found me on steamtrades and as the idiot I am I didn't check steamtrades. He didn't have a high level, but he had payday 2 and a few +reps from other guys, so I thought I could trust him and I sent him the codes. His account vanished as soon as we made the trade.

So here's the question. What are some common steam scams, and how do I notice a scammer? Any tips would be great!
Oh, and just saying. Merry Christmas!!!!

You can notice a scammer because they always had "+rep" in their profiles and they always see you on streamtreades.

sometimes, if they have a chance to still taltk to you after the scam, they are the one who gets mad / fights you then quickly blocks your communication, i think steam trades rep is more reliable than their steam account.

Never trust random add, always do background check when someone random add you.

Here some useful link:

Also, always check on SteamRep before trading with someone.
Get Enhanced Steam to make your life a bit easier. It will add few usefull feature, like a button to go to SteamTrades profile, link to SteamRep, and even their SteamGift profile.

In my opinion someone that adds you out of the blue offering you to buy (yeah, that's pretty much buying) a game for untraceable and impossible to recover steam wallet codes is a massive red flag.
Is not like trades like that are never legit, but think, wouldn't it be normal that YOU were the one looking to buy the game? Is like instead of you going to the supermarket to buy food an "employee" of the store is sent randomly to your house to offer you what you want, it's way too suspicious.

Out of curiosity, where did You have those Steam Wallet codes from? If You got them from some website that sells them or something, I think You could ask them to revoke those Steam wallet keys. Imagine how sad would the scammer me.

About common some tips and common scams...

  1. Always listen to your common sense. When You feel like it may be a scam - DON'T do it.
  2. Always check both SteamTrades and SteamRep. You might find useful info there (I highly recommend using Enhanced Steam as it adds links to Steam profiles that show SteamRep and other connected accounts.
  3. Try to not go first if possible.
  4. Some people impersonate others and they do it pretty well. Don't get fooled. They might have same avatar as some trusted known middleman/trader, same descriptions etc. When You ask them about SteamTrades profile link or SteamRep one, always check if that certain profile redirects to his Steam profile. Sometimes they don't impersonate anyone but just give someone's profile with a lot of reps hoping that You won't even notice.
  5. Don't care about "+rep's+ on Steam profiles. There are groups with members who +rep each other...
  6. NEVER click links from random people or even from people who seem to be "good" and wantingto trade with You. Make some research if they sent You a suspicious link (beware also of these links that end with ".jpg").
  7. Don't trade with impatient traders. Sometimes we really don't have time but then we can trade in few hours or days. Impatient "traders" are usually scammers, they never want to wait, they are always rushing You etc. It may actually be a good sign to not risk trading with that person.

Hope this helps! :)

Thanks for the tips.
For the wallet codes, I have a friend who distributes them wholesale. I bought 500 codes for 3.5 dollars a piece...so I guess I only lost like 7 bucks. And the best part is that it's legit!

If he distributes them, he has to get them from somewhere. I am sure he could ask to revoke these certain codes that You lose because of scammer.
I've added You on Steam to ask few questions

Well besides the above comments:

1) If it seems too good to be true. That said it does seem to be about the right price with the current sale.
2) Steamgifts level of 3+
3) Steam account (if you can be 100% sure it's them) of at least 1 year + 50 levels - though 2/100 is better.

Why should one only trade with accounts that are at least level 50? Five or ten seems reasonable, but you can't expect someone to waste their money on badges just because they want to trade.

@ BirdCute:

Absolutely correct.

I was just thinking that you could pick up a few happy hour bundles, sell the extra keys and get to level 5 for cheap. So it would be cost effective for scammers, especially if they are going after 20-50 people at the same time.

However maybe total number of games, total hours played or years of service would be better. But then again it's easy to get around those if your a group of scammers who are playing the long game by setting up thousands of accounts and plan on scamming thousands over a 5 year period.

But I'd hate to say, just be suspicious of everybody since I hope that's not what the community will become.

Maybe a trade service needs to be standardized (much like this site). Like Indiegala's trade site ... but better.

If HE contacted you without going through the normal routes, you should've at least requested that he goes first, then the most that would've happened would be that your redeemed key gets revoked instead of getting scammed straight up.

Haaaah... being scammed sucks. :(
Always expect there to be people who will take advantage of you.
One of my very first trades was with a guy who undersold the value of my Genuine AWPer into 1 ref. I only discovered this after I made the trade. And when I messaged him about this, he immediately blocked me. A lot of trashy people out there, but this site convinces me there are also a lot of generous people too.

It has its own statistics system for the people you are trading with, so scammers don't last 2 secs there, and thus go elsewhere for victims.

Nothing is 100% full-proof, but this is probably the least risky method of trading Steam games. I have 150 trades there and haven't been fleeced even once ツ

This is something i'm often confused about. Why do people put +rep on another persons profile, i mean i could get my friends to add it on mine or vice versa and delete anything posted about -ve rep. Isn't the idea kind of odd. Regardless, i am sorry that you got scammed but i hope you've had a better Christmas.

you cannot delete -reps on your steamtrade profile.
As for asking others to add +rep to you, there are steam groups specifically for this sadly.

I think he means the steam profile. You can easily delete any comments there and have others add rep or make alternate accounts to do so.

So There are so many Scammers Who ask for +Rep and saying that they will +Rep you too... also Scamers Get +20 lvls for good trades and on their profile have Fake Infos of Paypal , and other paying stuff. dont get scammed. :D

Aw, sorry to hear that.

And really sorry to say this :
If someone put his/her trust based on "+rep" on steam profile only
and didn't do background checking from random people who add
and didn't check steamrep/steamtrade
because it's really good deal and don't want to missed that..
He/she deserve to be scammed.

Cheers, enjoy your holiday and I hope you got what you want :)
