Terraria lost its touch for me when they sold it saying "After release, we'll update it frequently", and then only release one to two updates :|

No, it didn't. It borrows far more from Metroidvania games than it does from Minecraft. It's an exploration platformer game with building elements, not the other way around. If you haven't ever played games like Metroid or Castlevania, maybe you've heard of a Valley Without Wind? Same kind of game. Notch recognized this and has no problem with Terraria, as opposed to some harsher words he had for games like FortressCraft (which is essentially Minecraft with a new coat of paint and some extra features).
Minecraft is better than Terraria in some ways, but Terraria beats the pants off Minecraft in others. And if Terraria is "taking the idea" from Minecraft, then Minecraft is equally guilty of "taking the idea" of Infiniminer. Neither one is stealing, they use elements from games that come before them and put them together in novel ways to make a new product. That's how games work. If we've gotten beyond calling all first person shooters Doom clones, I think we can get beyond this too.

Terraria was abandoned by the devs wasn't it? Didn't they say they wouldn't be doing any more updates? While minecraft keeps growing...

Minecraft is going to win, but for everyone complaining about the stopped free updates from Terraria's dev (not like he had a new kid or anything. Oh wait...)

I didn't pay attention to the drama when it happened, but it was more than "he's having a kid".
It was all the promised updates that he'd be doing, then pretty much saying "Ok, I'm done with Terraria. NOW BUY AT THIS SHINY NEW PROJECT I'M WORKING ON!"

Yeah as Clockian pointed out Starbound is the artists project, not the main dev. And he did give free updates? I don't know about any promises since I was a little late to this party, what were the promises?
I just dont get the anger at this guy. Disappointment sure, but the vitriol that some people have is just ugh, come on.

Minecraft gonna win the poll for sure... and if anyone dares say anything negative about it a bunch of kids will jump on him.
Your game is not perfect. It doesn't need to be.
Now about the poll: both games are great, I won't vote because it's dumb.

I played Minecraft a long time ago, but it was boring as shit. Terraria at least has some cool bosses to fight.
Both games have an utterly retarded fanbase though, as this thread proves.

i wonder how many of the people voting have played both? or even one of them?
i got terraria first because some friends wanted to play it. i liked building a sweet base with rooms for all the npcs and working toward the best equipment. but i felt limited because it's two-dimensional so i couldn't for example make stairs from one room up to the room above it. i could make a sort of ladder, but the npcs didn't know how to use those. i also didn't really appreciate fighting monsters.
eventually the desire to build in three dimensions convinced me to buy minecraft, which i paid more than ten times as much for as i did terraria, since it pretty much never goes on sale. i liked having three dimensions and preferred having to arrange the ingredients to craft. also there's less focus on fighting monsters (especially since a bed lets you skip the night and monsters don't spawn in the dark). it doesn't have npcs you can talk to though, but it does have villagers who might trade with you. the big thing for me though is all the mods available for minecraft. i first heard about the tekkit mod pack (i'm doing a video series of it on youtube) and more recently started playing around with the direwolf20 pack in feed the beast. the extra things you can build and do with a nice mod pack have made minecraft last a lot longer for me.

what makes me cringe about your comment is not the fact that you hate it, that is ok, its the fact that your show your ignorace to everybody like a freaking trophy by calling it a rip-off

Minecraft is a rip off of Infiniminer. DUH!
I'd rather call Terraria a rip off of Metroid. Every game gets inspired by some other. That doesn't mean it's a rip off. if you actually played the darn thing you'd understand how wrong you are and how pointless this poll is. Come back when you grow up.
