At least region locked ones! Just do like you do on games we already own and make the button say something like "Locked to region you're not in" or something.

The way it is now, it prevents you from seeing all kinds of potentially interesting things like comments and who's entered to win, etc.

Ideally a change like this would be applied to all things you're currently prevented from seeing (deleted giveaways, giveaways which you're on a blacklist for, giveaways you're not on a whitelist for, etc.) but I suppose for some of those, the "privacy" makes more sense than for the region locked games.

I completely agree with letting us see region restricted giveaways, showing us a message just like with giveaways for higher levels or for DLCs when we don't own the base game.

It would also be interesting to see group / whitelist giveaways and giveaways from people that have blacklisted you, but I can see why some people wouldn't want this. Still, at least being able to see giveaways from people that have blacklisted you should be possible.

not to mention that it's already possible. Just click on the user, and you'll see a list of all GAs created by him/her/it

Not really what I mean by "see". I mean letting us access the giveaway page.

Well for one, SGTools doesn't work with region restricted giveaways exactly because it can't see the page. So if we were allowed to see it, we could use SGTools for region restricted giveaways as well.

Not really. There's also the reason Elunes posted here, which would be really helpful. Also in puzzles - I've made region restricted puzzles before and some people still wanted to solve them just for fun, but were faced with the wall blocking their way.

as for people who blacklisted you - you already can (unless they are group GAs) ;) right click -> Open in New Private window ;) When page is opened in Private Window you are not logged in thus the GA is not blocked for you ;) It is what people are using to pass multi-user GA trains/metros if one user have them BLed ;)

Seeing Group and WL GAs on the other hand is not a good idfea. Quite often there are things private to a certain group/whitelist discussed in description/comments and you may not want everyone to be able to see it.

A question not related to the post or anything on steamgifts- I've been wondering from a looooong time if this is your cat. If it is, can I come to Canada and pet it? It's so fluffy O_O

That's so sad to hear ;( I've also lost a lot of pets (cats and a dog) but mostly to idiot drunk car drivers. Unfortunately for me, I won't be able toget a pet in the near future but at least there are enough stray animals in my country

I agree with the first part about region locked ones, though I disagree regarding blacklist / whitelist giveaways for the reasons jims9350 already mentioned.

Well if I see GAs I'm blacklisted for it would be a hell lot of giveaways... nvm, I think it would be convinient to see additional info from region restricted and group giveaways.

I want to be in private with my whities, so no for that. I also blacklist some people for some reason, no for that too.

And recently, it's added that region restrictied giveaways now require minimum 5 entries to increase levels. So it's treated like group which drums it out of public giveaways.

It would be useful for trains, for example. Just an idea. You could have region restricted giveaways followed by not restricted ones and you could still smoothly ride the train.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I would put them at the end or a separate train. I don't understand why people need to see a region restricted giveaway to ride a train. Maybe for an event but it looks rare to me. :/

And do you understand why people need to see a higher level giveaway to ride a train?

I hide my high level giveaways on public. So that's my opinion and I rarely look giveaways higher than my level.

I'm talking about trains that alternate between levels - and there are tons of them. How would that be any different from trains that alternate between regions?

I suppose. Adding a whole new feature for one specific scenario (unless there are others I don't know about?) seems kind of wasteful of time and resources, though. Adding a train-builder into the site that automatically skips restricted giveaways seems more useful to me.

The whitelist/blacklist giveaways shouldn't be visible regardless imho, since those are individual and private settings.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

How would it be a whole new feature though? It would work just like higher level giveaways, and then you could go to the giveaways settings and check "Hide giveaways outside of your region?" if you're not interested in seeing them.

I just don't see the point in adding it.

I agree with that. It was just something that came to my mind. Of course that feature wouldn't be necessary, but it would be kinda cool, I guess. Also, a train-bilder type of thing really would be nice!

Trains are so overrated anyway, it's so much more convenient (for the creator and the consumers) to just list the giveaways.
Train = needless bandwidth hog.

yes, let us also see whitelist giveaways we can't join so we can complain X person didn't whitelist us.

the only ones that can see region/group/blacklist/whitelist GAs is support, and for a reason. less drama and people snooping around.

You can already see whitelist giveaways that you couldn't join. Just go to anybody's profile who has done one, it lists their whitelist giveaways... I don't see how not being allowed to view them prevents complaints. If people are worried that the comment section would be spammed, then just don't allow non-whitelisted people to comment.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

And what if we don't want people reading/seeing the comments on our whitelist giveaways? I've seen people post some pretty personal things on their WL giveaways that they probably don't want just anyone seeing.

They're private giveaways, just like invite-only. Let's leave them that way. Blacklist giveaways and region-restricted giveaways are the same thing. You're not invited, so why should you be able to see them or read the comments?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What would be nice is an exception for giveaways you won. There are a decent number of people who blacklist their previous winners, or who use their whitelist for giveaways and then empty it out regularly. If a key gets revoked down the line or something, or you just want to go back and say "Hey, I finally finished this game and it's awesome, thanks again", you can't.

Permalink

This would be really awesome. The giveaway is already over anyway, what harm could it make?

I agree if we are talking about direct links, if we talk about the main list they would only add clutter. Also, I'm not sure whether this is still the case, but there was a time where you couldn't see certain GAs that would be visible to someone who's not logged in: that makes no sense.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I was mostly talking about direct links or trying to view such entries from somebody's profile page.

And since you brought up clutter, since the website already knows what games you've won, why do they show up in the main list?

Account Settings-Giveaways

From there you can hide games you own, dlc if missing the base game and giveaways higher than your level.

I was about to say that, but is it a feature of the site itself or addon-only? I certainly don't see games I own in the main list, but I can't find the associated option. :|

If you're able to see them then what is the reason of blacklists & whitelists? Only Drama & griefing can come out of that. For region locks would it be cool tho.

Permalink

I thought the point was mainly to limit who could JOIN your giveaways. Not sure how drama or griefing could result from simply being able to see the details of a giveaway you can't participate in.

There's an option to disable some giveaway filters here, however I find it useless. It just floods the page with useless information. Only ~60% of all giveaways are public, imagine if we could see everything and join only roughly a half of it. Sure, it might be interesting to see restricted giveaways sometimes, but practically it's useless. It also takes time to implement. So, sorry, but that's a no from me.
