Civ 5 is pretty good and the age of empires 3.
There's other good games for up to 5 people.
But i think the ones that mix some pvp - strategy are the better ones since you can play it slow against AI or play against people.
You can also play starbound but i am not sure if that can keep 5 people.
Unturned is another good option if you like shooter free to play and you can host your own server.

I think the best suggestion I can give you: look for co-op games that fit your groups preference on http://www.co-optimus.com/games.php

Tabletop Simulator seems fun for a family LAN party.

What about The Ship?
Can be funny. Or, what about Sonic and All-Star Racing Transformed? Gang Beasts comes also to my mind

Played some contagion today. Which is a a multiplayer co-op zombiesurvival game.
It might be possible to even rent a private sever, where you don't have to bother with other players.

Ticket to Ride should be fitting, plus it is a lot of fun: http://store.steampowered.com/app/108200/
(based on the fantastic board game)

If you liked Neverwinter Dungeons & Dragons Online might be worth trying. I heeard good things about Town of Salem , then there is Tabletop simulator. Payday 2 is quite good for 4 person coop, as is Borderlands 1&2, and Sanctum 2. Trine 1&2 are great for 3 player coop, then there are Worms multiplayer games. People also seem to like Minecraft, and Garry's mode, but i didn't play them yet so i can't really say anything about it.
Edit: As someone mentioned Civ5, there are couple more games like that. Darkest Hour: A Hearts of Iron Game, Europa Universalis IV, Crusader Kings II. Arma 2 is also popular among my friends if you're up for a challenge.

medieval 2 total war with the Third age mod is great too, only kinda slow because you have to send over the save file manually so the other can do his/ her turn. Great to do on the side because its to frustrating to do in real time with waiting on each other XD

I like TERA. I played with my brother and my sister, pretty fun.
The biggest pro to this game is that it's free t play, not pay to win, and it's an overall very good game.

It's great that you all are doing this :>
Alien Swarm (free)
TF2 Mann vs. Machine missions (free) ?
Synergy (HL2 mod)
Warframe (free, 4 people)
Don't Starve Together ? You could teach them while you play.
Farming Simulator 15 ?
Terraria ?

Tabletop Simulator
Pretend You're Xyzzy (a cards against humanity clone that can be played on a browser)
Borderlands 1, 2, Pre Sequel (only 4 players though)

Left 4 Dead 2, Killing Floor 2, MineCraft, any mmo or Dota 2 (even if you said no to MOBA's, but it's still possible to play that game casually with a mix of different skill grades, especially if there are 5 of you), the same would go for cs:go. I mean, sure your dad might not be the best, but it's still fun to play those games with friends/family even if you're by far the worst on the team, at least in my opinion
You might be able to play some of the mods for WC3 too, sure the game is ancient by todays standards, but there's still some really fun mods for that game that you can play.
Apart from that I at the moment can't remember any good games that you can play casually with the family.
Hope that you'll manage to find something fun to play with them though and really nice that your whole family wants to come together and play games like that, makes me a little bit jealous ^^

I'd say something from the Heroes of Might and Magic series, preferably the third since it's a great game, fun to play and the only downside is that it's old...

Left 4 Dead (the original) is a pretty simple, but fun first person shooter game where 4 players take on zombies while you go from point A to point B. It doesn't have much of a story sadly enough (nor does Left 4 Dead 2), but I really had fun when I found some nice random people. The big plus of this game is that it's easy to get into (not a big learning curve), and the games are pretty quick (30 to 60 minutes to go from the start to the end of a campaign) and someone can join or leave whenever they feel like it (they will be replaced by a bot controlled by AI). I prefer Left 4 Dead over Left 4 Dead 2 (which I've also played) because it's simpler and better streamlined.

I'll say Don't Starve Together. The main goal of the game is to survive, the group may be up to 6 people and it's both fun and challenging to simply gather supplies and survive as long as possible. Rules are easy and there're many things to discover (or look up at Wikia for this game).
I also hint at games like Magicka or Left 4 Dead 2, where coop is up to 4 players but still grants a lot of fun together (l42 has also 4vs.4 mode where lacking players are replaced by bots) and as mentioned by other users above Sid Meier's Civilization V and Heroes of Might and Magic 3.

Serious Sam series (lots of difficulty options if you need to make it easier).
Marvel Heroes (very similar to Diablo/Torchlight) is free-to-play and last I checked has a maximum party size of 5. Lots of freemium elements, but it's simple enough to complete the main story for free.

I am playing once a week online together with my familiy including my dad, who is 60+, and my two sisters, who are "casual-gamers". While i would call myself near the hardcore gamer type.
We have played Guild Wars 2, WoW and D&D Neverwinter. We started as 4 people with Torchlight 2 and Diablo 3. But its always kind of difficult to be really entertaining for everyone as skills differ greatly. This is ok, because the main purpose is to do something together, while we are distributed all over the country. But we still search for something which can be enjoyed by all together.
PvP isn't an option as my dad just can't keep up with other gamers out there. So all those MOBAs aren't an option. More slow-paced strategic stuff would be nice. Some simulation games, but it should be cooperative.
As this is a great community of all types of gamers, i am sure there are some suggestions for games we should try.
Thank you Giveaway of a great Coop game:
