Context:
So I saw some products (e.g InstaMorph, ThermoMorph, Bixby Bixform Himold) a few years ago, basically plastic that can be malleable when you put in in hot water for some time (they can come in pellets or plastic sheets). Then recently there was a new product (FORMcard) but this time they arn't produced by companiess but by individuals who want to crowdfund it for mass production (and they have already reach 815% of funding on indiegogo), and FORMcard is the same as the previous mentioned products (just that it is in card form, instead of pellets, although the pellets or plastic sheets can be cut down or formed into card form by yourself).
And on top of that alot of other products on crowdfunding sites are just taking existing products and hyping it to get funding for production without the risk that companies take (i.e buying machines to mass produce the product)

Also recently Paypal has released a statement that they will no longer protect crowdfunding cash. Which I think many other payment platform will follow suit. So people don't even have the certainty that the money they used to crowd fund the project will yield anything.

My thoughts:
Normally I don't really weigh in much on crowdfunding issues. But seeing how easy it is to crowdfund a product (that is rebranded), even though there are products exactly the same as those being crowdfunded. It makes me feel a little think as to why would people not buy the products straight up (sometimes it is even cheaper to do so), instead of crowdfunding another similar product.
Also even if a company on crowdfunding site is not reliable, it seems that they would still get lots of crowdfunding funds as long as they hype it enough ( Problems with Crowdfunding )
Thinking about the crowdfunding stuff makes me feel uneasy (even though I don't know that much about it), but I'm hoping someone can shed some light on crowdfundings.

TL;DR
What are your thoughts about crowdfunding?

Is crowdfunding the best profitable thing now?

Depends

its not worth investing time into, but it improved compared to before.
like in tremor games tasks it only gives like 2 points ( equal to 1 video ) and takes up to 30m to fully solve. and in the video u litterly open it for 2 seconds and get rewarded, now it gives around 50+ points in most tasks so it improved, but again... its a waste of time since u can earn more points doing less offers then crowdfunding

I agree and disagree.

If it was to make the economical infraestructure of a certain poor region like Africa much better, then I'd donate.

But if it's for some crappy console that will play cellphone games, while looking like it might break at any moment, then no. I won't. (OUYA)

For games crowdfunding is a risky, yet rewarding method to develop a game with a good budget, but it's entirely up to developers if they have the passion and reputation to produce it to the public. Without the crowdfunding help, we would never have games like Shovel Knight, Freedom Planet, SuperHot and many others, that are successful.

Personally, I think it's a good choice for indie devs and others who really want to make their dream project and release it to the world if the world cares about it and if the dev cares about it. But for others like Tim Schafer who "used" their fans and delivered less than they intended to makes me want to question, did they planned their budget wrong or they thought they can get away by asking more and more, but delivering less and sometimes outright abandoning the game?

Overall it's like an emotional lottery - are devs capable enough to develop the game with passion and care? And if yes, then what about the audience?

I do spent quite some amount on kickstarters.

I treat them like charity. It's like donating my money to make someone's dream come true.
Just like creating giveaways, I do not expect anything in return.
Just like a normal charity, I usually only donate to promising ones.

But I mostly crowd fund interesting video games.

Yes, there definitely are problems with crowdfunding, many projects actually failed to deliver.
But if you look at the bright side, there are many success stories too!

If it's for something the person legit made, created,or came up with I think it's ok to ask for crowd funding as long as it's legit. People stealing the ideas of others and rebranding is a big issue since you need copyrights and patents to protect from theft of your idea. The whole thing of people just asking for "funding" for a holiday or equipment to start a LP channel is pretty bad too. There was once I was watching a stream and somebody donated to get the streamers to ask people to fund his holiday, that's pretty much how he said it no spin or nothing.
