Game companies tend not to make games with religious messages, or that address issues of transcendence and reality.

Would you like to have more games that gave you the opportunity to explore your religion, other religions, or to perhaps even have transcendent spiritual experiences?

Discuss.

Edit

Unwritten looks like a good example of the exploration of myth (not here used in a derogatory way), culture, and story-telling.

That might be a good example of how religion can be addressed in games, and make for a thought-provoking experience, though of course it is yet to be released.

Also I now would like to create a game of some sort that makes use of religious themes and questions. This thread has really inspired me.

If it's just logically and factually, then I have no problem with it being in games, for example in historical context. I just really don't want to see it in games like some kind of propaganda, either for or against it, this has no place in a video games.

Would you mind reading this answer to other user and giving me your opinion about it?

I mean, don't get me wrong I do dislike propaganda (Being it for whatever it is) but there's already a lot of it on videogames, what could make religious propaganda different? Should this one the only one to be avoided, or everyone?

So life does not mean anything to you? Christians are lesser human beings? Do they deserve death? If so, why? Every Christian or just especific ones?

Leaving this quote here

Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends

Hm, I like greek, egyptian or orient myths/gods in games. But I guess it is not the stuff you would call religious, more like educational. Definitely wouldn't like some actual religion put into games just for religious purposes.

The Greeks and Egyptians would have considered those actual religions though.

However, the Greeks and the Egyptions who worshiped those gods died off a long time ago. Who knows, if Christianity died off maybe Jesus would become a character in Dota.

Naw, the Jesus character would've been copyrighted in the original Warcraft mod and Dota 2 would have to rename him.

"Bloodwine" or "Yeshua the Waterwalker" or something.

As an atheist, I really don't mind it. Games aren't suppose to be taken too seriously. I don't understand why other atheists have a problem with it. It's all fantasy and made up to you isn't it? So who cares.

If you want a good discussion of the topic of religion in games I'd direct you to the extra credits videos here and then here. If you want to see the reaction to the two videos you can go here.

I think games have been making good use of the symbolism and ideas that religions have to offer. Xenogears was chock full of references that the writers expanded and molded into an incredible work, in fact most Square games have references in some shape or form. Mass Effect has the Ashley character whom is slowly revealed to have faith in a god, which I think adds an interesting element to the series since these humans have encountered the culture shock of aliens and yet religion still exists. There are more examples I'm sure, but the extra credits videos address the topic better than I ever could.

You know, I would very much like to see religion in games. Whether it be with the characters, the plot, or just general Easter eggs, I feel this gives the game a bit more depth and makes the characters more relatable. That's just me though.

No since most of developers have no idea how to implement faith/religion into games without making it some crazy cult or sinister stuff.

Is that enough reason to avoid the topic then? I mean someone will always get butthurt one way or another (See the PETA case over ACIV)

I think that a respectful (Up to some point at least I mean no direct denigration or mockery) approach to the topic should be fine. And even if there was mockery involved it would depend on its intention and everything. I dunno. What do you think?

I don't want to see religion in games. Mostly because it will inevitably try to propagate it. It would include all pros and none of the contras. It is impossible can't depict all religions equally because each and every one of them denies the rest. And no matter which side developers choose (I can wager it would be Christianity every single time) billions of people will be offended. And religious folds tend to be very vocal.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's quite a generalisation you made there.

Why will it try to propagate? Would only be propaganda? What's wrong with propagating Religion? After all we are all thinking human beings I mean, everyone can choose in what to believe or what not. You can't force your beliefs into anybody.

Religions are not mutually exclusive. Many of them have a lot of things in common and they do not deny the rest.

Why would it be Chiristianism? Are the other Religions less interesting? Less juicy? And I don't know but whether we like it or not Religion has played a great role over humankind's history, so should we obliterate those bits? If someone was to create an historical should they avoid topics such as the Crusades, The Thirty Years' War or the Spanish Reconquista?

Why are religious folds vocal? I could name a bunch organisations who are louder than many religious people.

That's just how it always happens. You can't show any religion in a bad way because people will get upset. And they can't be neutral, because a game about people that do absolutely nothing is not very exciting. So the only way is to show only good parts of it. And if you show only good parts of something, you make it more appealing than it is. Gamers won't be able to make informed decision, because they weren't told everything.

Theistic religions are mutually exclusive, because their core belief is that their god is the only true one.

It would be Christianity solely because most game developers are from countries where the majority of population consider themselves Christians and are the target group for most products.

There are many organizations and people that are very vocal. The thing is they are vocal only about things that concern them. And depiction of a religion in a game will primarily be of concern of religious organizations.

From my point of view, there's enough religion already in video games...
Looking at titles alone I can see a lot of religious overtones.
Some games, we side with the 'light' and discourage evil/sin, while other games we sympathize with the 'dark' and defy 'A' god-like figure.
In Sims/Civ/Insert-your-choice-Tycoon, we play as the god.
Personally, unless I'm interested in the religion hinted at, I tend to disregard religion in Video games.

I like my games to be focused purely on the mechanic - I don't like religion, politics or even "emotion" in my games. I like to turn off my brain and just see if I'm faster/more co-ordinated/have better timing than the AI or other players. So no, I don't want religion in my games - but that's just me.

I love it when I'm playing through a game and come across an unexpected 'what. the. FUUUUUUUUUUU....' moment. Like in Saint's Row 3 when Killbane kills one of... well, spoiler there but those who saw it will agree with me there.

As long as I know what I'm getting into before I begin playing, I am fine with religion or politics if they keep the preaching limited and really ramp up the intrigue to keep the reader/viewer/player interested.

I'm a little leery of games that explore Christian ideals and history, mainly because it's been tried before and, with no exceptions I'm aware of, they all suck. The last one I looked at was Catechumen, which was made in 2000 but looked like it was made in '90.

Thought provoking ≠ Religious based.

I'm taking this as you wanting to spread Christianity through games. No.

Now if you're spreading the base ideals brought forth by many religions and schools of though (truth, true happiness, possibly just maybe god) then I believe, that done correctly, these ideas can enhance the plot and make the game more memorable for people playing it.

Also satires of every religion. Someone make that game.

Really, you could make a game on religion, but you would have to acknowledge the fact that religion is made up of flawed people. A bit like communism, it's a good idea you want to believe in, with good intentions, but it sets the stage for things to get out of hand.

Anyway, I would much prefer thought-provoking that may incorporate religious reference. Remember, every religion believe's it's right as part of the religion, so someone's wrong.

I honestly don't care if religion is there or not. It's not a big deal either way. Anyone who's going to get bent out of shape about this needs to get a reality check. I wouldn't get mad or offended if a game was all about the praising of Buddha or if it was hugely anti-religion. There's no reason for anyone else to get offended or mad either.
