Huh, they're asking money for it? That's odd, I thought Artifact would be a free to play game.

Haha, that's a good one. Also explains a lot about Artifact, I see :D

It's buy to play and you can't earn cards/packs by playing for free.

you can't earn cards/packs by playing
So it's pay to play AND pay to progress, then? That's... not surprising, actually :D

Basically the initial price for the game is for starter cards/decks.
Comment has been collapsed.
not realy...
you get the game + 10 booster packs to open... in then end you pay for the boosters... game price has exact same price...
you can get stuff through playing events and playing kinda "ranked" matches... you get several boosters after you win 2 or 3 games in a row...
i bought it because it was the first card game after a long long time wich made fun... sold almost all cards and made 30€ with it... 12€ minimum profit for me... :P but profit is not sure for everyone since its based on your luck with the boosters...
Comment has been collapsed.
Sorry I should of been more clear. You can't earn packs for free just by playing the game. It cost's real money to enter those events.

dunno how they will handle the ticket system and free events in future...
they should give free tickets for login bonus and keep always a free event online... but i think they will try best to make more money... i can just hope for them that they will left the greedy line or just use it to get enough money in the beginning to make investors or GabeN happy...
since i just play sometimes a bot match and rare an event match im happy, but the game is designed for competetic people and not ppl like me that play this one casual to relax...^^

I hear some people have made a nice profit by selling the starter pack cards, but of course it depends on your luck. So worth taking a gamble especially if you like the game. I thought I wanted it but MTGA seems much more interesting and has better F2P.
Comment has been collapsed.
I wouldn't, but I recommend watching some gameplay and reading some of the available reviews, then making an informed decision.

There's no way to earn packs by playing so if you aren't going to spend cash to buy packs then I'd go with a different card game.
MTG Arena, Elder Scrolls Legends, Eternal and Hearthstone are good games that you can play and earn cards and packs by playing.

It's like an actual TCG, so if you're okay with spending money on packs, trading/selling cards and all that stuff, sure, go for it.
I've heard that once you buy a pack and open it you can no longer refund the game, so keep that in mind (could be bullshit, too).

The microtransactions model is killing the game in its core. If you're not interested in ladder and everything else that is behind a huge paywall, and you also want to gamble on assumption that it won't get worse in the future, I heard that the gameplay is actually enjoyable.
Since I'm not interested in buying a game to have fun with a mere half of it, I strongly say "no". It's ridiculous what Valve is trying to pull off, the reviews themselves reflect that.
At the same time I wouldn't have any argument left if you're having a huge wallet with fat hundreds of dollars to spend, but then you probably wouldn't ask that question. It's same as classic TCG in this aspect.

I'd rather suggest going into Gwent, the new Magic Arena, or even TES Legends or join the zombie horde that is the Hearthstone user base. At least they do not have an arbitrary entry fee and you can technically just play them casually without paying any money, only spending on it if you want to get really serious about your rank and the level of gameplay/opponents you can face.
Also, pretty much all of these (maybe except Gwent) is just copying Magic to a degree with some Yu-Gi-Oh mixed in, so might as well go to the source and try the new Magic.

if u going buy pack every expansion for 10 year stright how much it cost?

I got artifact and made like 13-14 $ from the starter packs and I still have 5 tickets for arenas. Of course it is luck based but if you wanna play it and you have some money in your steam wallet go for it. But as far as I know you cant go infinite at this stage of the game.

I saw lots of reviews about 'buy the game, sell cards from free packs, enjoy' and decided to try. Got few not the most rare cards among those and in grand total I got almost everything back, game cost me only 3-4$ in the end. Now I can play draft mode, until enough people buy the game, so the market becomes oversaturated with cards (most of them already cost around 5c anyway). Game itself is great in my opinion.

No, never, dont you even think about it. You buy this, you bury any chance of Half Life 3 being made.

P2W/P2P. I have watched Reynad (below) and multiple other Hearthstone players review it. I would say no unless you like CCG in general and are willing to learn it.

If you want a heavily skill oriented CCG it's worth a look. It's not as expensive as it looks. You can buy a playset of every card for around $250. That seems like a lot but playing top tier decks in Hearthstone costs about $1,000 a year.
I haven't made up my mind but it's an interesting game.

I have 42 hours in it and it was released a week ago so I definitely like it and I'm not a card game player, the only card game I played before is Yugioh. I play free phantom draft (you get to draft all the cards), exactly the same as paid one but you don't get any rewards.
There are some balance issues, some of the cards should be more in line with others, this isn't a problem in draft but it's a lot more apparent in constructed. It feels a little like there could be more cards, but they said they are planning expansions as expected.
Game has a tournament feature and a spectator feature and both of those will be improved in the future. You can see that the game has a lot of love put into it, there are a lot of cool voicelines and interactions, even non 'creature' cards have lore voicelines about them.
Most of the people give it a bad review because of the business model and I can see that, if you are a card player and invested into the genre you will probably like it tho, but if you aren't you will feel like they want too much money. I'm not a card game player as I said before and I'd still buy it.
Valve said their biggest goal for now is player progression, buying the game now may feel like a gamble and if you are on the fence I'd say wait and see in which direction they will take the game.

The game itself is great from what I´ve seen so far. At its core its very similar to all the other digital card-games, but with (mostly) well thought-thorugh twists from the DOTA-mechanics. The 3 lanes/playfields add an element similar to Gwent, where you constantly have to evaluate wich lanes you want to support more without making your intentions too obvious to your opponent, while simulatiously trying to guess his plans.
As many people already stated, you normaly won´t get any cards for free, but thats oversimplifiying it.. I would break it down to three ways to play this game:
The "Nomal TCG" way: You pay money for boosterpacks and buy/trade cards to build your decks and play free matches.
The "Pro-Mode": You buy event-tickets and enter events. If you win at least 3 matches, you´ll get your event-ticket back. If you win 4 or 5 times, you will get the ticket back AND 1 or 2 boosterpacks. This is the only way to get free cards (you start the game with 5 free event-tickets), but you have to do really good, because is you lose two times, the event is over for you and the ticket is lost (unless you already have 3 wins).
The "Free to Play" way: You still have to pay for the game itself, but after that you can stick to "Casual Phantom Draft". All players constuckt their decks from radom cards. You dont have to own the cards and you wont keep them afterwards. No costs involved and nothing to win here, but its still good fun und I always love the gameplay-variety in draft-formats. This way you can keep playing the game for free, but you will skip the whole "Card collecting" aspekt.

it's a pay to win game. if you are ok with it, go ahead.
but it's funny to see other games with microtransactions get destroyed while the holy valve game get praised and excuses made for it because "it's not so expensive", "you can get cards by playing events" (if you pay to enter), "don't play if you're poor", etc. 🤔

Considering it shares Magic's toxic economic model and overrated original designer (Magic only started to care about balancing when he took his distances with the project), I'd say it's an easy pass, at least until Valve decides to change how you can get new cards.
