I'd only recommend buying it if you're just going to sell all the stuff you get right away. It's great as a scratch card but it's terrible as a game (large money sink). If you're looking for a money sink, let me tell you mobile gaming is where you should be.

Short answer - No

Longer answer - No, wait for it to be proven by time as the game may die or be changed

The longest answer - No, unless you are a huge Dota fan that has Axe as a mobile background, Beastmaster as a poster on a wall and bedsheet with Lion. The game looks like a cash grab so far - you can't earn a thing by playing, just paying as it often written by reviews - you have to buy tickets, buy packs, majority of heroes are not in the game and there are sooooo many f2p card games that are friendly that there is a solid chance Artifact will go f2p in a year as well (the twitch viewership of the game went from about 45k to 7k in 2 weeks, same the player base - 60k to 28k and there is no reason why it should go higher soon since the negative reviews are starting to be much more common right now)

This review may help some people... ignore the "positive" and just read over the facts, he pointed out much things...

I honestly don't believe people who are talking about the game balance with 18 hours played and use things like "tournaments will give you a lot of cards" with no data to back that statement up. I know he is trying to be helpful and everything, but it is like with every card game - everyone believes they are the expert and they are right about the game. Just look at the card reveal in HS and discussion below each card.

What I think is helpful is the graph of reviews that shows the game shifting towards the negative (taken as possitive reviews X negative reviews per day) which probably means that the game won't satisfy the majority of people for long. Also the average playtimesince release is 11 hours - for a hyped new release featured on Steam and in every Recommended section that is not a lot.

" As you win tournaments you get cards, so you can use those cards for tickets too." but it is possible he means the tournament style of game mentioned above it ... that can be understand that both way. I have read it.

Also for the ticketed drafts to pay for themselves require above average w/l which just means the majority of people will not get it - hence this method is not viable.

the ticket system sucks imo... and i can understand all bad reviews... they should make free tickets available for daily logins or something...

i hope they get their economy fixed so people can enjoy the nice card game itself... :)

I don't think the game is goign to be viable from a long time perspective unless they change the whole economy - there is no progression, no "working towards something", no bonuses, daily login quests etc.

I think the game will get stale really fast because of that. Even a pack that would require 5 days of work with 1 card would make it much more viable :)

yes, if the stuff around the game stays like this it will die... they have to add alot stuff that other TCG offers... atm it feels blank...^^

Exactly my point with the reviews ;) It started really possitive just because it has a great first impression but it gets stale really fast and just feels like p2p onwards :)

I hope it will survive as the competition, when it comes to card games, would actually improve the rest of the game genre (right now it is basically a HS monopole and in my opinion Artifact is one of the games that can actually shake it up just because how popular Steam is as a platform)

This + many mentioned the new game system... most card games atm are mostly same mechanics etc... Artifact brings some fresh air into the genre... A) the game will impproove or it will inspire other card games to invent new mechanics... never played a card game that is close to this mechanics... :3

Gwent tried with 3 combat lines, but it feels real strange imo...

I honestly prefered the Elder scrolls: legends style - it is HS style of hitting "face" but offers 2 lanes and often has events that change the rules for the lanes (such as - minions summoned to this lane are copied to the other lane OR minions summoned to this lane are transformed into a random beast)

It is also f2p friendly, has 2 types of arenas and really well done campaigns. Sadly it went under the radar for a lot of people

There are too many card games apparently :D

It is too bad that all of them require a huge time investment to stay on the current expansion level

In terms of the game itself, Artifact is amazing. There are so many meaningful decisions to make every single turn, and it really does feel like the better player wins the majority of the time. Most of my losses I chalk up to a bad deployment, a time I gave up initiative when I really needed to keep it, etc. Very rarely do I feel like I got destroyed because of RNG, though of course it does happen. RNG is inherent in every card game and Artifact is no different.

I would say it really depends on what you're looking to play. If you want to play constructed, you should be prepared to buy some cards from the market or from opening packs. The vast majority of commons and uncommons are 5-10 cents each so it's reasonably cheap to fill in those. The premium rares are going to cost you a significant amount, Axe is the most expensive at around $18. If you want to play constructed but don't want to put any additional money into the game, Artifact probably isn't the game for you. On the other end of the spectrum, if you're a serious CCG player, Artifact is actually cheaper than most other card games. If you're the type to buy every card and build a full collection, you'll actually appreciate the open market. There are only 2 cards that are above $10 in price on the market, both of which are heroes so you would only need to run one of in a deck.

There is plenty of content here to play for free. Casual phantom drafts, casual constructed, and the Call to Arms event which lets you face off against people with 6 different pre-constructed decks. The only difference between Casual and Expert modes is that Expert modes require entry tickets to play, but you also have the chance to earn rewards as well. If you don't care about constructed at all, you can just play the free draft mode all day long, which I should add is one of the best I've played in any game. Draft is the reason I bought this game.

Just like in Magic, there are Pauper communities that pop up that cater to people who want to play without having to invest heavily into the expensive rares. There's even support for it built into the game. You can challenge your friends or set up tournaments with the ruleset that decks can only contain commons, or commons+uncommons.

All in all, I think the game is great but I also understand it's not for everyone. It doesn't have to be expensive, it's just not F2P like some other card games are.
