A good friend of mine bought me New Vegas on my birthday. I can tell you with the GOTY and all the content available in it, I spent 100 hours on 1 play through. Now there are multiple endings and paths you can take, so you get the idea that you can get a lot of time for your money in that game. Not to bash 3, it is good in it's own right as well. Just saying I like NV a bit more. It felt a bit less linear and restrictive on the main story.

New Vegas has arguably improved gameplay mechanics (such as aiming down sights; I like it, others might argue that it's a console thing and has no place in a PC game.)
Also, NV has one of the best DLCs I ever played, Old World Blues.
On the other hand, New Vegas, when compared to FO3, hugely lacks in other areas, such as Soundtrack (I am not kidding. The contrast between the good music in FO3 and the distinctly underwhelming music in FONV leaves a terrible feeling in my chest), immersion (FO3 does this fantastically), depth (of characters, plot and the world), et cetera, cc
Overall, I'd say that FO3 is overall a much better game, but NV is definitely also playable.

And it begins by having you born. In first person. You ARE the character. The hero of the wasteland is you, and not some courier dude who's body you happen to possess after he got shot in the head. It is literally impossible to be any more immersive. (Immersion does not mean "Oh hey, this is exactly as I know it IRL")
PS: about the music: Okay, it is subjective which songs you prefer, but there is also a quantifiable factor of NV music that makes it inferior to FO3: there seem to be a lot less songs available. I am constantly thinking "I heard this song the hundredth time today, and I still don't like it.". Not only that, but the radio program between songs is practically non-existant. No 3-Dawg entertaining you with news in style. No propaganda oppression channel. No 3-Dawg mocking said propaganda channel. Just one lame radio channel playing the same boring handful of songs over and over.

I'd actually advise you to buy FO3 and not FO:NV.
As some other users already stated, their are shitloads of tons of great Mods for FO3 which not only alter the maingame but also create a full new game (IF you new the Nehrimmod for Oblivion you can imagine what this means).
Sure, there are similar mods for FO:NV,but well NV just has'nt this whole postapokalyptic atmosphere as FO3.
In FO3 you much more get the feeling that YOU are the hero, the one that needs to do THIS so THESE guys can fu** THOSE guys so ALL THE GUYS can have A PARTY.
Oh and the point with the gameplayimprovement ain't counting, coz theres a mod for it for FO3.
With those mods is it the same with apps on your apple.THERES A MOD FOR EVERYTHING IN FO3.
And well yeah, the mods for FO§ just make it soooooooo much better than FO:NV.
Although the Old world blues is hillarious and actually this dlc is worth so much more than the basegame NV :D :D :D

If you could only get one, I'd say New Vegas, but if you plan on getting the other some time after, get Fallout 3 first. It doesn't make as much use of the Fallout universe as NV did (which is why fans often see NV as the true successor), but is still a terrific game to play through. I'm recommending F3 first because it may be somewhat difficult to go back to F3 after playing with NV's arguably improved mechanics.

It had pretty much the same music and Mr. New Vegas didn't get boring after a while like Three Dawg oooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

NV had a lot of bugs when it released. That said, you can fix most of it with the console. Been playing it again recently, seems like the patches fixed most of the issues I was having. Id say, "Get them both, they are great!" But if you can only get one, get NV, with the DLC.

New Vegas feels more like the original 2 Fallout games to me, style-wise, not really sure how to explain it. And it makes sense, considering it was made by Obsidian. Which are made up of some of the guys from Black Isle Studio, who made Fallout 1 & 2. I would say get them both, though.

This thread has been seen before BUT Fallout 3 is much better. It has certain "feel" to it that you just do not get with vegas, also sthe DLC's for FO3 are amazing.
