Which is the best controller for playing PC/Steam games?

I use a Xbone controller for PC games though I'm still not used to the layout. Spent most of my life playing on Playstation, so seeing an X pop up tends to through me off a bit. QTEs are a nightmare for me since I can't seem to commit the XBox layout to memory yet :/.

The Ps4 controller just feels better in my hands. I get annoyed with the bulky Xbox slug.
It's all personal taste is it not?

And if a game on steam does not support the Ps4 controller, I just use "DS4Windows"

I'd say try to get your hands on them and pick whichever feels most comfortable to you. (Out of xbox/ps... I've never heard great things about 3rd party.) I use a DS4 and have grown to really love it. I've never been a big console gamer, so I chose based on reviews & limited use at friends' houses. Agree with others that you will sometimes get xbox button prompts in game, it was a little confusing at first but I got used to it pretty quickly; once you've got the locations committed to memory it really makes no difference.

I'm using xb360 and, honestly, analog stick on same axis with abxy buttons makes more sense nowadays, cause these things are the most used, not d-pad.

After my brother got himself a PS4 I can't stop gushing over how good the controller is.
I'm not sure about Xbone, but PS4 gamepad feels good to hold&touch.
Buuuut, it costs a lot, so I'd rather go with cheaper x360 for myself, or even offbrand, once x360 breaks.

For me it's Steam controller all the way. I've been playing with dual-stick gamepads since Dualshock 1 came out, used Thrustmaster gamepads, Xbox360 and Xbox One controllers.
Steam Controller is gold. I don't play twin-stick shooters much, but if you're having problem with them, try this tip.
As for other games, trackpad + gyro on SC gives incredible precision similar to mouse in first-person aiming modes in games. I just can't use a controller without gyro anymore, which leaves me with only Dualshock 4 as an alternative, haven't tried it yet, but I heard its gyro isn't as precise as SC's.
Also thanks to SC's touchpads I can configure some games that use button-mashing, like fighting games, to use touchpads for buttons so that I can button-mash without destroying my device in the process.
Xbox One controllers are nice and work natively in games from Microsoft Store, but I got so used to gyro and trackpad features that I don't want to look back.
Also Xbox One Elite controllers are the most expensive ones to buy, Steam Controllers are reasonably priced. I saw Dualshock 4s being priced higher too.

How could stats mistake an Xbox controller for a PS4 controller? They use completely different inputs (XInput and DInput) so it isn't possible to stats-wise get it wrong if their pulling from a database that stores this. So yeah I call BS on who ever said that haha.

I use an XBOX like controller, some other companies version of it, it generally feels better to have the left joystick where an XBOX has it apposed to where a PS controller has it. It's as simple as that, oh and in-game they generally show you XBOX button prompts, never PS button prompts for PC games, unless if you mod it, so yeah, if your going to use a PS controller be prepared to learn what INPU 1, 2, 3 and such is or know an XBOX controllers layout because it will most likely show "press Y" and such.

I got an XBox ONE controller which was on holiday sale as I got one for my new setup. Never used a controller since I do not own a console. Reading through articles though, since I am using Win 10, it natually and most of the time will not have a conflict with the controller. I've read that PS controllers have issues with configurations in games.

I still dont use the controller often but shape wise its pretty comfort. It did not come with a USB cable, its wireless but you need a USB stick/dongle for that. I specifically asked the online store helpdesk but all they answered was yes. Luckily, it just uses the same USB cable for my fone. Therefore there's no need for me to pay another USD14 for the dongle. Also i've read about disconnecting from games when power is low so you always have to gauge it. I do not mind it being wired since I game closely to my PC and monitor as its mainly for PC games requiring a controller.

I have xbox 360 controller and redgear pro wireless gamepad. I like redgear gamepad more than xbox 360 controller. It is good in every aspect than xbox 360. here is link of amazon.

I'm still using an old generic PS3 controller (its shape is slightly different to the real DS3 but that actually makes it better in my opinion), the battery runs out too quickly and the left stick is starting to fail, gonna need to buy a new controller at some point.
My suggestion would be to just buy the one that's confortable for you, there's no much point of buying the "best one" if you don't like using it.

I've been using my wired x360 controller for the past 10 years and it's still "as new". (and I play with it several hours per week)

I have access to a DualShock 4, and that's what I would use. I do have a Xbox 360 controller, but that doesn't feel as comfortable for me nowadays.

I've only used an XBOX 360 controller and wired at that. I don't have anything bad to say about it. My only complaint would be... that if I had to replace it, I'd need to purchase an XBOX One controller.

I wanted to get a Steam controller, but they are now pretty much only sold by third party sellers and prices have skyrocketed. Looking at amazon.ca right meow... I would have to shed over 200$ CAD. Oh hell nope.

XBOX 360 for me.

I use 2 controllers, Xbox One for most of my games, and a Dual Shock 3 for precision with metroidvania games (Hollow Knight), I think the 360 buttons are way too hard, while One's is more soft and don't hurt the fingers.
