I've seen it suggested that at least one character should be hidden or at least changed (eg '8' posted as 'eight'), else bots are liable to take them. Otherwise I think they should be generally labeled so someone isn't just randomly grabbing something they don't want (not to say there's no chance of that simply happening anyway), but really, I suppose it's up to the person posting them. As it is people rarely seem to comment that they got the key one way or another

I know, but that's the thing. I don't think it's interesting for the site (which has a system behind the gifting) to have its structure modified just to accomodate this informal type of gifting, while making the forum private maybe might have some negative side effect like, for example, not being searchable on Google.

Most unlabelled keydrops are for games that are junk anyway, so the excitement in them comes from being the first person to grab them, regardless of what they are. It's a bit like being in grade 4 and winning the tug-of-war contest where the only prize is your mom's admiration.

I'd bet Most key drops aren't grabbed by bots, but someone faster than you. Someone might have seen it second earlier etc. or has activation window open (god knows why they would do that!).
Bots aren't magical thing faster than humans and very prone to errors. (There isn't public steam api to activate keys, and I doubt botter have access to private one).

I always tease which game it is I'm giving away like this ^^
also G05FL-TQCK8-FYJ7Z (something special :P...activate at your own risk)

It doesn't make a difference to me because half the time I see them when at work (can't have Steam here) and the other half it's been minutes since the key has been posted. Either way I can't manage to get them.

I'm pretty good at ninja'ing keys, and I have to admit that knowing the title of the game beforehand would be nice. Especially since the day I ninja'd Medal of Honor on Steam and I already owned and played it on Origin...
But otherwise, keep the keys like they are when you drop them! I hate anti-bots, I always end up ninja'ing the key and finding out I had to switch a few digits first. :P

Someone say key drops? I'll gladly take key drops.

Agree with the guy who says folk can do what they want to do, although up until a few weeks ago I'd have said they're not really for me (dropping them, that is).
Been giving away games all month as sort of a birthday celebration on a thread and bumping it every so often. The bumps included some Origin and Desura keys I was giving out too. Started out saying "Whoever wants (name of game), reply to this post. I'll add you on Steam and give you the key". After the first one nobody replied so I started doing them as key-drops instead.
My thinking behind asking people to respond was that I'd like to know who got the key, even it's just a screen-name and that it had definitely been used. Not too bothered about ninja's taking stuff and not saying thank you, but I just thought it would be nice to know who got it, even if they themselves didn't say thank you. Don't know why it meant it something to me, but it did and still kind of does, less so now I've done a few drops.
Anyway, on ninjas and bots etc. I wouldn't be surprised if there are kids who can't join Steamgifts yet because their Steam account is worth less than $100 monitoring these forums on at least a semi-regular basis and grabbing some of the keys. Fair play to them if they exist, and they of course can't say thank you if they're actually doing it as they wouldn't be able to post.

True acts of kindness don't stem from an expectation of gratitude, but it meant something to you because it's always nice to know that whatever we've done (or in this case, given) was appreciated. To even get a response back from someone who showed interest would give you that. You bring up an interesting point about kids who may not even qualify to join steamgifts, but the hit-and-run ninjas who grab dropped keys who are capable but can't even be bothered to say thank you are, in my opinion, pretty pitiful.

The only key drops I bother with are the ones in my Steam chat window. I'm too slow to ninja anything, and I really don't want garbage in my Steam account. It's annoying enough just owning HomeFront (which I pre-ordered). (Thank God I didn't pre-order Aliens Colonial Marines.)

Well, if they want to give it away that way it is fine. Those codes "belong" to them, so yea .... For me, I probably would not take a key without knowing which game it is because I am just to choosey concerning games and I don't want to have too much games in my library I probably won't play (despite that I'm too slow anyways) ... That is also the reason why I am at 300 points nearly all the time and why I only bought one bundle so far.
As a sidenote: In general I would wish that people are more grateful and bring a bit more "love" for games and not say things like "bundle junk". They may not like the game but (this is what I want to believe) developers took a lot of effort to make those games and you should somehow respect this and not speak ill of games just because you (or even the majority) don't like them. I also get slight aggressions whenever I read thread titles like: Game XYZ, is a worth that dollar? I mean, seriously. Even if you are a kid or have no job, this is just .... We waste money on so much stupid and unnecessary things so I will never understand that question.
Well, enough useless complaining. The important part up there: Key drops; okay if people want to do it, but would not take one myself without knowing the game.

I see that some people will just paste the key itself when doing key drops. I think this is totally a bad way to do it, because people will just claim the keys blindly, and there's a (fairly good) chance it'll be a game they're not interested in, therefore, they might never play it, and, then, they had taken the chance from somebody who could be genuinely interested in the game.
Also, all of them are most likely claimed by bots when dropped like that (I don't know any, but heard about it).
Personally, when I see a key drop that's not identified, I don't even try it, because I have so many games already, and just a few I would be interested in, but that's just personally.
So, what are your opinions on that?
