My solution: play more games anyway.
It honestly depends on what your priorities in life are. There can still be plenty of time for games in "real life". I still personally play games a lot and I'm 28, have a good job and a wife. I fully expect that if I have kids my free time will be significantly less. That's part of the reason I don't really want kids.

Same here. I get every cheap game or bundle + have more free time than most people here (basically all thats not sleep is my free time right now) and i'm trying to finish every single game since june this year...without success. My major problems are:
Things i'll try to do for fixing it: I'll stop buying cheap games except if they're on my wishlist and i'll try to finish everything (even Ironclads lol) till new year 2014.

I watch some of the walkthrough vids on youtube. And then read some reviews. And then I wait until few hours before the sale ends and try to make my mind. Finally I buy the game and put it in inventory. Sometimes I buy games just because I wanted to spend some money or I plan to gift it later. I do really hope my friends play more games other than Dota2.

haha yep, thank God I don't like that kind of games

I think alot of SG community does have this problem, steaming from various reasons.
Myself, I think its from the stresses of everyday life. I feel Im getting too old for games. I enjoy them the same, but responsibilities from real-life are many. So I 'want' to play these games, but I don't have the time anymore. Not like I did 10 years ago. So ends up with increasing backlog. Same with my XBLA collection.
Digital downloads is both a blessing and a curse. Steam is both Pure Good and Pure Evil :) .. The good being, its a great client, neat and tidy, all in one nice place. The Evil being the crazy sales (either through steam or other places).
My wife said to me when she seen the credit card bill .. $40 (yes this is very small compared to others I know) - "$40? Thats enough to buy a new Xbox game". My response was, "Well that $40 got me 20 steam games" ..
For me its not a huge money sink - cause I spend my time looking at sales/bundles/trades etc.
But its a HUGE time sink. One that I should be spending real life things...
I keep thinking .. When Im on my deathbed - What memories will I not have because of time wasted on 'collecting/playing/reading about/watching' video games....

I had that problem, I have been getting better though, only buying games which I know for sure I am going to play.

My first Summer Sale I did the exact same thing as you. I bought tons of games I "might play" but never really played them, and if I did it was probably only for about 1 hour or even less.
This is how I handled my situation. "Would you REALLY play it?"
I've been contemplating Torchlight II every time it is on sale, but I think this always "I probably won't like it, and if I'm even thinking about thinking about playing it then that means I obviously have second thoughts about it so I shouldn't buy it". I've only bought the Bethesda Collection + BL2 (My collection was refunded... not BL2 yet), I have gotten Mass Effect, and I bought some gifts for friends. So technically I only got Mass Effect this whole sale. I'd say that's good ^_^

nice! But what with bundles? they're often too good to miss :D

You just have to realise that you're not going to play them in the near future and they will be on sale again soon.

this is actually very true. All games will be on sale in the next holidaysale they do. Only buy the games that you are going to play in the meantime :)

I have pretty the same situation.... though I was pirate once, but now i play only legal games :D And yes, i have too much of them in my library and too little time to play (yes, i'm a student, i have a BF, i have a job and frieds outside PC :D). So i found a group that tries not to buy any games till 2014, I joined them :)

when i'm unsure of a game, and it doesnt have a demo to download, I get the pirate version, and try that first.
Worked for just cause 2, dont like it, too samey. I would have been disapointed if I had bought it without knowing I wouldnt like it.
It has its uses.

I've found that life for a gamer is always going to be one of two things:

Yep, and even if you amass a nice sized collection in case of #2 there, something you really really want always comes out when you're flat broke. If there were Murphy's Laws for gaming, that would so be one of them.

For me its not about the money .. its about a time sink.
Spend all this time carefully planning what I want to buy or trade etc.
Get it. Have that accomplished feeling. Then dont have time to play it.
The next day Im thinking about that next game I 'want' to play .. and the cycle continues..

Exactly, it always feels good when you make that trade/purchase, but then it just starts over again.

Same problem. Over a $3k steam acct.
Real job. married. house payments, etc etc etc.
I tend to play the really REALLY cheap games, or free games most, haha.

If I'm not totally positive I'm going to play it or install it right away, I buy it as a gift. This way, if it sits there for ever, or if I win the game somewhere, I can do a give away with it. Otherwise, I can just "Add to my library" and give it a shot when the time comes.

Ive been doing this. Same with keys from bundles.
Prob with that is .. I feel it continues the possibility of getting more. Because I think ... Well Maybe Ill just give it away. And if I do, then I will buy something else.
Endless cycle.
That or .. Maybe Ill trade it.. and then spend hours trying to trade it...

The things I ask myself before buying games:

I have fable 3 and assasins creed 2 on the xbox, they were christmas presents from 2011, they are still in their plastic. no likely to open them anytime soon.

I know I will get to everything I buy/win eventually, honestly a lot of my games are from bundles and well they just add games you would not have bought originally, like I bought bundles that had like 1-2 games I wanted and it added those and 5 more I was meh about, glad Humble is doing separate keys nowadays.
Also if I ever do have kids, how cool will it be to pass my account down to them when this games are ancient and I barely use the account, I think it would be pretty damn cool.

yep, I too would love to pass the account to them, they'll have a huge library to choose from. That would be awesome.

Everytime I see a sale, somewhere on a site or on steam, I think: "oh darn, gotta buy that one"
I know they are fun games, I look them up on youtube.
I tell myself, one day you'll play them, bam... bought!
But let's be honest here.
I don't know about you guys' free time but I'm in college and my free time is pretty limited.
I keep buying games I think I will play someday. But in fact, chances are I won't even install it.
I'm close to "the real life-world" and my game-time won't increase... I'd like to know how you guys handle this problem.
Please no child-ish reactions because I know this is a problem many gamers face or have faced.
thanks
EDIT: I'm not a brainless addict, I just want some reactions
