I have to agree. This sale is really bad. Very few games have a decent discount and are actually more expensive than regular weekly sales. I might end up getting only a fistful of games instead of volume.
On the other hand, the GOG's winter sale has better prices for several games I want, sometimes for half the money Steam is asking. And the ridiculous part of it of it, that I just got the Mass Effect Legendary Edition cheaper on EA.

Why ridiculous? On Steam Valve gets a 20-30% cut from selling. In the EA store this doesn't have to be calculated into the price. EA also wants to promote their store/app and while there is no competition for EA games for Steam, there is for EA app keys (retailers).

Oh, I get that you're unhappy with the sale, because games you wish for didn't get good discounts. That's okay, happens to me, too. I assume that you're also aware that it's just a personal impression, because for an objective analysis one would have to compare actual data regardless of personal interests. That's why I didn't even say anything against that.
But two things in your original posting are either expressed poorly or show missing understanding:
Feel free to enlighten me what else you actually meant originally. Happy holidays!

Some games never even go on sale any more, others' discount%s stay like carved in stone for decades, 5x-6x times overpriced "solid indies" with accent on visuals rule the hot market, shameless clones swarm after any successful idea, one dlc pack can feed a big family for weeks in a poor country - truly the end times coming! And if it's not enough already you can't see friends' buys in activity.
Comment has been collapsed.
What criteria is used to determine that a game is 5 or 6x more expensive than it should be? Are we looking at their cost of development and hope to make enough money to live and maybe even see some financial growth and to at least begin development of the next game while also supporting the current game? Or is it a different set of criteria?

Thank god, im not a digital marketologist, but when i see the same game mechanics just in more pretty cover, i dont care how much that production bubble costed, that industry is self-serving. Better have less products - less sequels, less clones, less remakes, less skin-lifts, less work done for the sake of it. Median prices grow slowly - like frog boiling, now we have some price tags simply unimaginable 10 yrs ago. But the market seems both omnivorous and bottomless. Soon they cancel your sales even formally - we gonna continue buying, sigh but buy.

This seems like a more appropriate analysis of the AAA industry, where cost of production is irrelevant to industry standard pricing and bloated budgets being used as the excuse for predatory pricing decisions.
Indies don't really have a unified pricing scheme nor do they have bloated budgets. Which is why I'm asking about the criteria for pricing being appropriate or "5x-6x" more than it should be.

Yea it's odd about the not seeing friends buys... WTF is that? I thought maybe it was something in my settings that somehow got changed but it's still set to see them.
This some joke "privacy" feature? If they cared about that, they'd not track anything.

For those who are waiting for games/dlc to get more than a 50% discount, just be aware that Steam has minimum price thresholds that will get in the way for cheaper items.

Steam seems to impose a rule of no more than 90% off and no less than 39 eurocents price. This leaves ample room for higher discounts as we see on most games. Some sellers circumvent this with a game bundle and big dogs the likes of EA and Ubi can do as they please pretty much.
Comment has been collapsed.
Games go on sale for 95% off(Technically they could do 99% off too assuming it doesn't fall under 49 cents), and they go as low in price as like 27 cents, although the limit should really be 49 cents. I don't know how they lower the price that much past the 49 cents but they're not bundled. It might be fixed now though but it still a thing like a month ago.
Comment has been collapsed.
I've read somewhere that the maximum discount is 90%.
But the link I provided includes one other catch. The minimum discounted price is half of the minimum base price. So games with a base price below $US5 are not able to get 90% discounts. Games at the minimum base price ($US 0.99) can only get 50% discounts. Which is something to be aware of if you're waiting for deeper discounts.
EA and Ubisoft can ignore all this because they don't sell games that cheap.
*Or your regional equivalent.

Hm.... The Divinity: Original Sin - The Source Saga is a weirdly priced bundle.
I am the first to admit I am not great with numbers but:
I own Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition
and with Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition priced at 13,49€
and the bundle being priced just for me at 16,43€ XD
...
How can Steam tell me I'm saving 7,05€ on the bundle when I am actually spending almost 3 bucks more than if I just bought DOS2?
Comment has been collapsed.
Sorry to hear that. That happened because of the greed of some people in countries with a stronger currency. Saving a couple of euro for them, means games are now not very affordable at all for you. Sucks. =(

Yep many people stopped buying on Steam here as well... Epic games still have TL support so people started to using that. I've got $3 in my Steam Wallet from selling trading cards and stuff i might buy one game with that but not sure what yet thinking about Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen or Grim Dawn.
Comment has been collapsed.
I haven't played Dragon's Dogma, but have heard good things about it.
I have played Grim Dawn for more than 472 hours and enjoyed every one of them.
It has different difficulties, 6 base classes which can also be combined and if one has the interest countless builds to explore and perfect. Though for the first two difficulties you don't have to dig into build building, you can just enjoy playing the game. There also are loot, factions, quests, optional rogue-like dungeons and optinal multiplayer, but I haven't played that.
Comment has been collapsed.
Grim Dawn is probably the best top down ARPG you'll find.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ok thank you all seems like Grim Dawn is better choice since i won't be buying games that much anymore. I have a backlog to finish anyway and don't have many this type of game in my library. I did play Diablo when i was younger lately all i've played fps and tps games so good choice for different flavor.

sad to hear that. I know is a """"""""good"""""""" move for steam, but price changes were to high. I really think they will lose a lot of sales because of this. Real problem where VPN users abusing the system.. But we get the short stick in this sittuation sadly.
