I'm looking to buy/trade either of these very shortly as I am quite interested in these survival games.
I just want to know which game is 'better' i.e. which has a better community, better features etc.
I would only be playing this casually like 1 or 2 hours in the weekend only.
I personally kind of prefer Hurtworld because it doesn't look too 'hardcore' but I want to be absolutely sure of which one is better.
Finally, which of these two is likely to be more popular/better in the long term like by the end of this year?

Hurtworld or Rust?

Hurtworld
Rust

Personally I prefer 7 days to die. if you don't like zombies you can deactivate them and it becomes similar to rust, and rust is better than hurtworld imo

Rust. Somehow I'm hearing a lot of negative feeds ongoing at Hurtworld.

I'm a big fan of the first-person survivalgame genre so I might have some useful input here.

Rust is extremely hardcore PVP and an unforgiving madhouse, just so you know. (Which can be great fun)
I have not played Hurtworld so I have no comments on that one.

I checked your Game list and didn't really see anything comparable to those 2 games,

Maybe try the Free to play version of ARK: Survival of the Fittest to see if you even like these kind of hardcore FPS PVP games.
(Needs a strong PC though, but since it's free it can't harm to try)
Or like Deatwatch said, 7 days to die is a great choice, with more choices between PvE/PvP .

Or just pick whichever is cheapest and your friends play.
Cause these type of games are usually way more fun with friends to have your back. (and way less fun if you're solo-ing)

Thanks for your great advice and I should probably try out ARK cause my only experience of survival is COD Zombies, Terraria and Tomb Raider (I don't even think they count as survivors)

no, none of these games is survival game, they just have some similar elements (crafting for example) ;) COD Zombies is Horde game, TR is action-adventure with some crafting elements, Terraria is the closest thing - but still not really a survival game ;)

Also keep in mind that if you only have 1-2 hourrs to invest per week it may not be the best genre for you - cause these games progress veeeeery veeeeeery slowly compared to things you mentioned. 1-2 hours you may as well spend hiding or only gathering some most basic materials, and you will have to quit before you manage to do anything fun.

Important Update
Forgot to mention this but which would run better on my laptop:
8 GB RAM
Intel Core i7-5500U @ 2.40 GHz
2GB AMD Radeon R7 M260 graphics
Thanks again for all the advice

Then Hurtworld. Even I know that Rust needs a small nuclear power plant to even start up.

Unfortunately that is not a laptop designed for gaming, and most of these games require quite a bit of horsepower.

While the core and ram is fine, your videocard is way too low for both ARK and Rust.
(Though i'm not sure how you managed to run Tomb Raider, so maybe i'm confused)

You could still try the free PvP version of ARK but I would not recommend spending money on Rust.
Hurtworld says it needs a higher card as well, though I don't know much about that games requirements.

7 Days To Die will run fine on medium/low settings, so I would suggest that one.
Also its probably one of the best games ever, and is more 'rookie-Survivalist friendly' compared to the other ones, so there's that. =P

I get around 30 - 40 fps when playing on medium - high settings.
Don't get why you're confused I surpass all the recommended requirements in the steam store page for Tomb Raider.
But thanks for the heads-up on the hardware.

I did a 'will it run' check with this site
And you're right, It does say it can run Tomb Raider easily on minimum requirements.

I didn't check that game before, and thought it had pretty high minimum requirements. =P
From the other games in my previous post the feedback was that only 7 Days to Die would run well.

I haven't played Hurtworld, but I have almost 600h in Rust.

To enjoy Rust, you'll have to play at least 3-4h a day or be part of a big group that takes care of stuff while you are offline. In 1-2 hours you'll not even be able to build a proper stone base that'll last a day. If you're only gonna play on weekends, you'll have to start fresh each time and waste your time farming resources that'll be gone the next time you log on

The time you want to spend playing and your hardware say big NONO to Rust since you would not be able to run it even decently and it takes much more time to even get started when you play on your own. I usually play alone and it takes about 10 hours to get a decent base and equipment which is the point when you can actually start enjoying the game.

Have not tried Hurtworld so I cannot give you an opinion about that.

I just played rust and poorly (My computer can't handle it very well) but for what I've read, hurtworld is more focused on PvP, wich in this games seems to be focused for extremely aggresive rat kids. Are you ready for that?!

If you want a survival experience that you can absolutely play in 1-2 hour chunks, try The Long Dark.

It's a single-player game, but it's awesome.

Thanks for all the advice. I guess I'll decide on which once I get a better gaming medium and looks like Rust is more of a popular choice.

imho Rust if way too unforgiving. Unless you are playing with friends or find a decent group you have a very very low chance of surviving on your own. Think of it this way, every bloody single player out there is there to kill you. Its not survival, its slaughter.
