So, a few weeks ago my Steam profile said I had 996 games. I thought "awesome, only 4 more and I'll cross the magical threshold to 1,000!" I even had a gift copy (RIP) of a game I wanted to activate as my 1000th game, to make that crossing special. And then I thought, "wait, I can barely manage to finish one game per month, why would 4 extra games be good? How will I ever manage to play a thousand games?" So I started deleting games from my library, starting with freebies + bundle stuff I knew I'd never play, because of negative ratings and being genres I just don't like. I've gotten rid of about 30 games so far (I've also added new ones), which isn't a lot compared to the total, but I've now decided that, before I activate a new game, I have to delete 2 that are already there. I'll probably lose out on some booster drops for cards, but since Steam gifts in inverntory are no longer a thing, no reason to save up Steam wallet that aggressively. (I'll still do all the card stuff, but now I feel like I can pass on never-play-games just for cards, more so than before).

In unrelated news, I bought some stuff from the Humble Spring Sale :/

What about you? Do you like having a big library with all the games, or are you more picky about what goes into it? Do you have a goal you want to get to or a threshold you don't want to cross? (no poll, don't really know how to ask without restricting the answers in a way you'd have to reply anyway)

Personally, I'm pretty happy to stay below 1,000. I don't know how low I'll go, probably not below 900, at least not soon, but it still feels more manageable than four figures.

908 in my library. Started about half of them, but finished a mere 266.

Not a bad idea to remove bad games you'll never gonna play. But I also discovered some gems because somebody else suggested certain game I should play. And I didn't even know they where in my library.

Even terrible games may have "so bad it's good" entertainment value. If you've got the time to check ratings/reviews, you might as well try it for a bit.

I avoid getting really terrible stuff in the first place (even freebies), so I've never yet had the pleasure of playing something horrible. In my experience, the worst games are the average ones -- slogging through those for 30 minutes to find out if they get entertaining at all is just a chore. But the occasional hidden gem makes up for it. Sometimes you find a game that you really like but just doesn't gel with the hivemind. The majority can be wrong when it comes to personal taste.

I started like most activating everything thinking id play everything. Then I stopped buying bundles or activating only what I wanted, I never got around to deleting stuff, I had a mini delete but nothing serious. I hate that my libraries so big, it needs trimming but I keep buying.

By getting rid of, you mean like really deleting from the Steam account, like permanently?

I was honestly so happy when they added the delete feature, especially with how it came with the ability to reactivate games at will. I was thinking about creating a list to ask support to delete for awhile, but they added the feature before I got around to it. :3

So I've deleted about 350 games. :x I actually wish I could delete more, but I'm probably at the point where I don't have anything else to delete. I'm only a few games away from passing 500 (on steam profile), which for some reason almost makes me feel anxious. I hate having this many games, even when I fully intend to play the majority of them. I've always had the same habits with games though. I had far more GameCube games as a kid than I ever got around to beating. I think it's because naturally I'm not very good at games, and putting in the effort to get good at singleplayer games I'm not quickly good at is almost never fun for me. :(

A few weeks ago I actually went through the same phase as you and I deleted around 10 games from my library too.
Most of the time I need to make a swift decision whether a game can be or can't be in my library. So I look at the ratings initially to quickly choose yes or no to reduce the amount spend on researching some games.
Mostly very positive to overwhelmingly positive get in my library.

I am exactly at that 1k door right now. Number really doesn't mean much to me but after 950 i thought it's been becoming overwhelming for me. So i come to a conclusion if i don't finish 2 games i won't buy another game even it's a bundle game or I would only buy games that i will play immediately I can't resist pixel art with good combat so i bought Dead Cell for example I still collect freebies if it's not more than a couple of clicks. But i stopped idling too. I am in a mixed state right now. So i won't enter GAs or buy games if i won't play in a near future. Because if i don't they just sit there for months. I don't want that.

Edit: Btw deleting games won't get your eligibility but it will decrease the drop rate of boosters.

I used to like having a smaller library, but somewhere along the way I just started activating everything from every bundle I picked up. Then about a year ago I decided to become far more discerning with the games that I actually bought, and "hid" everything I had no intention of ever playing (which was about 400)...

Recently though, I hit 1350, and decided a real change was needed, and like you (coincidence that we both did it at around the same time), I started deleting a vast number of games from my library. Over the past few days, I managed to go from 1353 to 1049 (I was aiming for under 1k, but there are quite a few games that are packed together, so removing one would erase games that I wanted to keep).

I've won almost 100 games since joining this site. I'm still just over 400 games total, and I'm glad. I don't enter unless it's something I'm actually interested in playing. I'm currently hiding more than 11,000 games and DLCs so I tend to only have one page of giveaways to look at. It makes it even better when I do win something :-)

I'm collecting games and found Steam provides very nice options for showing only Installed, Recent or Favorited games. It also works very fast, so I'm happily making use of that. Also doesn't it bring allot of disadvantages when it comes to trading or this website, as the API cannot tell anymore which games you own? I can imagine it will only bring extra administration as into blacklisting games here and remembering what games you did or didn't checked out before or own (as you can't just tick in the game name anymore in your library). Nevertheless, congratulations on not reaching 1000 and good luck with all your efforts keeping it that low.

Recently I did the same! I broke 600 games and was close to 700. I got rid of all the freebies I go "just cause" and I used to do HH so I would get 6 copies for giveaways and one for myself... Now pretty much all my library is games I want to play excluding some wins and games I couldn't delete :P

Good for you! I deleted a few games not that long ago as I'd much rather have a smaller library of quality games than a huge one full of games I'd never want to play. Refreshing to see after a lot of big 4000+ milestone posts on here recently :)

I never thought I'd end up over 1k in my library either and then about how most of them are freebies or trash indie games that I stuffed all in at first. Nowadays I buy less but still buy games I find interesting and sometimes even the indie ones that seem decent to "support" them as an excuse. The numbers increase much much slower but not entirely and still satisfy my hoarding needs xD As for deleting, I've tried a few and it's too much work so I kept to simply hiding all trash from my library instead(laziness ^_^ )

tl;dr - think of the lower quality indies as supporting genres you like (not all of them)

I tutor english privately and I give access to my steam account. That way, despite the fact I have over 3300 games, I don't feel very much guilty about it since I have 7 different students using it. Sometimes they play awful games, but I don't restrict, since as long as it is in english, they learn something and they finally use the language (persuade a 12 year old that he needs to learn a different language when in most normal situation he never needs it - but with games, he needs it).

I did have a point where I deleted 90% of my library, kept enough to stay on here.
But I did end up working on getting everything back, only missing like 10 games I can't remember.

How do you decide which game is never worth your time and which one might be a treasure to you?
We can recognise trash, but I also hated a popular game I got from a bundle. Should I delete that too?
And what if my taste is different one, five, ten years from now? Owning something doesn't bother me.

I still don't know which side is right for me, but I do enjoy collecting games and seeing the number grow.
Before Steam my only PC games came from magazines, so I had like 3 shitty ones that were very bad.
Now I can do surveys and buy certain $5 bundles with 10 amazing games that I get to play.
Even without that, there would still be TG where you could earn enough games for a lifetime.

That being said, I plan on going to 1000 (or 1337) games and then stop collecting for a while.
At that point I want to play every single game for at least 10 minutes to be able to judge it fairly.

I don't think I want to be the person who owns like 4k+ or 9k+ games.
It's nice, surely, but after 1k I personally only want to add games that I have the time to play.

In the beginning I was just hoarding games but now I'm picky. When I look at how many games are sitting there collecting digital dust =(
It does feel slack!

I used to add everything to my library, but deleted about 100 free "junk" games last year. I got tired of repeating the same steps over and over again, but I still have many more due for deletion ... thanks for reminding me of the work I have to do!

I use categories, and install the ones I'm really interested in playing right away at times. Have about 200 installed and waiting.

Yea, I try to keep my library small as well. Or phrased otherwise, I don't like to have to many unplayed games in there. And with my slow pace this leads to games rarely being added. Also me being an achievement hunter adds to that as it makes me rather picky on what I want add. If I had to make some arbitary rules for my account it would be something like this:

  • Have less than 10 % percent unplayed games
  • Have a completion rate of over 90 %
  • Have at least half of the games in my library completed

Well, this also leads to me having several keys somewhere I didn't add because I wasn't 100 % sure I want to play them. But I still keep them. They are kinda like my Shadow library ^^

Unless it was free, I just hide the ones I don't intend to play -- I've hidden about 120 so far.. It just feels wrong to delete.

I have a few games that I activated when I first learned about bundles, because I was so excited got get many games at a low price, that I don't really find interesting. Apart from that I only have games in my account that I intend to play or that sounded interesting in theory but I can't get warm too them in praxis.
