I don't have strong opinions on privacy one way or another, but I don't agree with this quote. Although it seems clever and pithy (and I initially wanted to nod my assent), when I think about it a little, the two things (privacy and free speech) seem to have little to do with one another. Or at least, the "downside" of strong privacy (making it easier to hide shady, illegal, or dangerous activity) doesn't apply to free speech, which inherently, to me, generally shouldn't be limited. Or flipping that around, preserving the right of people the speak freely (including about the government, elected officials, etc) and not be silenced is far more important to me than preserving the right to limit what government or legal entities know (or can know) about what you're doing.

But I'm not well-versed in the issues or arguments...I could be missing something important. Cheers.

Privacy is an issue that I'm quite passionate about, so I'm glad you responded. I see privacy as a human right and a necessity, the ability to converse, act, and live your life without an external entity watching and judging every thing you do.

In extreme surveillance states, such as with Soviet Russia's Cheka, Nazi Germany's Gestapo, or more recently in China's Xinjiang region, the lack of privacy and fear of reprisal denies individual expression and even the will to live. Once people are afraid to speak out, it opens the door for more dehumanization and loss of freedoms. Even in modern society, people limit their private conversations because they're afraid of being put on some list, or being charged with a hate speech or other some such crime.

Even worse, mass surveillance data from the NSA and other intelligence agencies has been used to blackmail and intimidate targets to coherce them into serving their purpose, without charging them of any crime. And multiple creep agents have been caught sharing underage nudes and who knows what else.

I'm not against targeted surveillance on and individual, if they are investigating a specific crime and go through all the proper channels and get a warrant. The whole idea of pre-crime (you aren't suspected of anything, but we're watching you anyway) is ominous and overbearing, and not fitting of modern society. Mass surveillance doesn't help us, and just opens the door for misconduct and abuse.

Yeah, I figured you were a privacy guy considering your post. :) Obviously, the kind of surveillance you're talking about is a Bad Thing. And obviously what the NSA did is a huge breach of public trust. It becomes a "who watches the watchers?" thing. They should be persecuted and heads should roll. But that doesn't mean that I don't support the government being able to do some surveillance, even some general non-targeted surveillance. I like when bad deeds are caught on surveillance video (even if from hidden cameras). Bad guys should know that they can be caught at any time.

Also, I wasn't really arguing against privacy, I was arguing against the Snowden quote. Although it seemed right-on, when I thought about it more, I don't think the comparison is so valid.

It's often better to say nothing of importance than say nothing at all.

For example when bumping. :)
