I've been using my Cowon J3 for the past 4 years, still working like i bought it yesterday. <3
I love it, it has everything i need; excellent sound, amazing autonomy. You can also tweak it. Cowon is definitely one of the best in that category.

Ikr? It was a reference for a long time, i'm not even sure if Cowon has topped it since then (haven't checked).
As for the interface, i don't know what to say, it's classic and fast enough for me. Even if you don't like it you have the option to change it, just look at what the community has done.
What i can tell...
• You can use the touchscreen OR the physic buttons to play your music.
• It has a micro SD slot. mine is the 32go version + 32 more from the micro SD, i'm fine with my FLAC. :p
• Speaker sucks tbh, but let's be real who use it ?
• No software required (thank god), just drag&drop your music and ENJOY.

I'm rocking FiiO X3. Clean, crisp, neautral sound. Got the M50s too. Not my main pair, but they do make a great combo. The player does have some occasional issues with its file management system, but they're far from being major and the developer is quick about fixing them. I believe they also released a newer model recently, so you might want to look into that.

You basically just described the sansa clip +....btw if the memory is to small you can put Rockbox on it(Should do that anyways) and shove a micro sd up to 128gb from what I recall.
Anyone who is recommending iPods apparently missed the sound quality(5th gen was best but still was iffy because of bad jack electronics) and durability portion of your post...

Really small and amazing battery life. These two were the only things i needed on a MP3 player.
I don't use it very often, and due to its great battery life you can turn it off today and after 1 month it still has enough battery.
Sound quality. Dunno, i don't pay too much attention to sound quality while I'm using it. For my tastes it was great.
Size: The thumbnail on amazon is way bigger than the real product.
Durability: A nice rubberish plastic, dropped it lots of times, no issues with it so far.
Usability: Well, it really easy to use, although the "volume up/scroll up" button feels strange when you use it.

I still use my old Sandisk Sansa e250v2, although I do have Rockbox installed on it (along side the original firmware), and I haven't found a good reason to upgrade. With your requirements I think it would be best to find an older player and checkout the Rockbox alternate firmware, works on old iPods too so you don't have to deal with iTunes and Apple's other crap.

My birthday is in a couple days and I decided to choose myself a new player. Any suggestions? I love music, listen to it whenever I can. I have the Audio Technica ATH-M50x (Or will have, in 3 weeks, gotta love UAE delivery...)
Some criteria:
Size/portability: as long as it's not bigger than a palm I don't really care.
Sound Quality: This is a big one, gotta love sound quality.
Durability: Also a very big one, I tend to, uh, not be so careful with things, I'm a lil clumsy if that makes sense.
Media: Will use it for music only, so support for movies isn't required.
Usability: How easy it is to use. Simple and easy. Don't need any touchscreen and 16m colors or anything like that, as an example.
