I am not raising my arms just yet. Firstly there's been a lot of damage to the community that needs restoring. Secondly this is not the end of paid mods its just the end of paid mods on Skyrim. Mods should be free always so modders can work together and share freely. Valve can't see that and will continue to try and capitalize on the mod communities. A donation is a whole other matter as long as the minimum is 0 so. That way modders can get money for their work without it being locked by sales. As long as Valve does not realize this we have not won anything.

Valve has only created the framework. It's up to each developer to go through with paid mods or not. Bethesda chose to do it because they wanted to get a piece of the revenue Valve was making from TF2, DOTA2 and the others. It backfired and now they will go back to the drawing board to figure out a way to reintroduce it in a new iteration of Fallout or TES.

TESO seems to have hurt their coffers.

I realize the developers are just as much at fault but valve is not blameless. Either way paid mods will never be a step forward for any platform or game as the level of sharing and caring for each others work will suffer. Also one of my favourite mods of all tame TATW for Mediaeval Total war 2 would have been stopped dead in its tracks for copyrights issues alone as it is because it is free it has been allowed to exist. Same goes for the GoT mod For crusader Kings 2. Gaben and his cronies should never have opened this can of worms and the developers should be more than damn grateful someone is willing to work and expand their games so they stay relevant and keep generating income instead of trying to capitalize on other peoples work. Modding is a hobby and if people want to earn a living doing it they tend to get jobs at gaming studios (if they are good enough). As said earlier an option where you can donate money to the modder would be nice. And one where Valve and the developers doesn't steal all the cream. Several bands have tried to do free albums with a donate option and it generates more than enough income so it is a viable option.

Edit and thank god the Online game tanked I hate mmos and this might compell them to keep doing singleplayer games ;)

"years old modding community in Skyrim was probably not the right place to start iterating"

Now, which will be the next target for experiment? GTA 5?

I would've preferred for Valve to address the things that were actually wrong with paid mods, like the ridiculously low revenue for the mod creator, or the broken refund policy. But instead, Valve is placating the hysterical masses. Very disappointing.

Hopefully Valve will stay in their comfort zone now (Hats and Cases). instead of messing up other games.

Guess I'm an 'entitled gamer' for not wanting every single thing that didn't start as monetization to become so. Say what you want, modding didn't start as a business, it was done purely out of need and generosity to the community. That doesn't make anyone who dislikes this 'entitled'. No one is saying that they deserved it.

Bad Valve! Greedy Bethesda! Hope they just allow for donations or something that will actually help the mods to get payed (not just getting 25% of their work)
