So I'm really interested in the roman era, but I can't really find any good games that cover that era. If you know any, please let me know. Games that I have played or that I'm still playing are:

Rome Total War
Total War Rome 2
Total War Attila (a bit later then what I'm really interested in, but it will do)
Ryse Son of Rome

I'm also a bit interested in the Medieval Era, but there are a lot of games that cover that time, but if you know any I really must play sometime, let me know that as well.

And of course a little GA (it's not much, but I still had it lying around).

EDIT: the vikings are also really fascinating to me. I've not seen many (good) games cover that either.

EDIT 2: Wow, I got way more responses then I expected. I won't have time to answer them all, but I'll look into the games you suggest. I really appreciate all suggestions!

early 90s game: Centurion
it not only include fights, but you can fight in colosseum or have a chariot race in circus maximus, was a great game in its time.

not on steam, you can find on some site for free and will work with dos emulator.

When I was younger I played a bunch of Centurion, Defender of Rome... it was fun but I don't think it aged very well. The Civilization games have scenarios from that era that I'm sure you would enjoy.

For the middle ages, there is nothing out there better than Crusader Kings II, in my opinion.

If you like reading and are interested in the Roman period, Colleen McCullough's Masters of Rome series is amazing.

Yeah, I'm not too interested in games that old, but I really enjoy Civilization V atm. And Crusader Kings II is great! (Should look if there is a roman era mod for that...)

Praetorians is on steam... it's a pretty decent strategy game, which has two problems:

1: Graphics: It hasn't aged well, like most early-3D strategy games
2: Graphics: It doesn't like windows7-and-up, expect a few graphical glitches, mostly with water not rendering consistently. Not gamebreaking or anything, but annoying enough that it gets in the way of enjoyment. But if you have a PC that's old enough, it shouldn't be an issue. Or maybe a virtual desktop solution can work, I don't know about that.

I like the fact that they have different unit types able/unable to acces certain areas, like spearmen and cavalry can't enter forests, legionaries can't get through water, etc. and what's really interesting is how you can 'demote' any unit to become your basic builders, but not the other way around, and I like that you actually need to do some scouting before you move. Also, sieges are fun, on either side.

Piece of gameplay advice: Don't go rushing all over the map, it's not that kind of game. Take it slow and you might actually have fun.

You could give Titan quest a go. Not really roman era but roman themed. It's pretty decent game overall.

Rock of Ages has antique themed maps. As well as medieval ones.
