The Fidelio Incident is currently on sale (-40%). Please consider buying it, if you like these kinds of games. It's really worth it. And they are desperate for sales. If we want to see more from this developer, we need to give him a little support. Because I doubt they can live from just 3k sold copies. So please have a look at the game. And if you like what you see, just go for it. You will have a good time.

Also, 2 public giveaways for The Fidelio Incident:

Level 5
Level 9

Ok, this is based on the idea of Khalaq (thanks for that!) and my last thread. I hope we can create a nice list of games that deserve to sell better than they are, or even are in dire need of support. Since the summer sale is on, it would be kind of stupid to limit this to full-priced games. ^^ So, let's just say we list games here that are so good, that they deserve to be bought, no matter the price.

Please feel free to contribute to this thread. If you know a game that clearly should get more attention than it does, please link to the store page. And if you want, write a few lines about it. So, what are other games that deserve our attention in your opinion?

EDIT: Ok, let's just make a list of games that are worth a look, and that deserve a few more sales. Browse through the list, you might see something that interests you. :)

forma.8

It seems to be a really good game, yet nobody buys it. I didn't even know the game existed, until I saw and won! yay!^^ a giveaway for it. And it looks so interesting. I am eager to play it, once I beat Sundered.

It has good reviews. Also a very good user score on Steam. Why the hell does this game fly that low under the radar? I think it deserves better. Maybe some of you will take a look now. :)

What Remains of Edith Finch

I think it deserves better than the 25,000 copies it sold before the sale. Yes, on sale at -25% it sold quite a few more copies. I still think a gem like that should sell better. And more people should experience it. We should give this developer the chance to create more games like this.

The Fidelio Incident (ON SALE RIGHT NOW 40%)

It sold only like 2,000 copies so far. Which is pretty ridiculous, if you ask me. It has such a good narrative. Fantastic actors (love that irish accent). Great atmosphere. More gameplay than your average walking sim. Nice graphics. Outstanding sound design. And a nice ending. It really deserves better than 2,000 copies... It's just 1 month old, but already at -34% suring summer sale. If you like story-driven games, I urge you to take a look at this one. It probably needs our help way more than Edith Finch.

Late Shift

This is an interactive movie. Not the Telltale kind, the real kind. It's an FMV game with relatively high production values. I would say it's almost TV show level. The actors are good for the most part. The story is nice, and the choices really matter. It even has 7 different endings. If you like FMV games, this is probably one of the best you can get today. 89% of the players on Steam seem so think so, too. I hope these guys make enough money to make another one of these. We already saw how bad things can go with Missing: An Interactive Thriller, which was discontinued due to low sales. I just hope Late Shift doesn't have to suffer the same fate.

Sundered

This game gets a lot of hate at the moment. Mostly for difficulty spikes, and for the parts of the world that are procedurally generated. And I understand the criticism. I understand it can be frustrating when you do well, and then suddenly there is such an amount of enemies that you feel you had no chance at all. Many people don't even like when games get too hard. So, these moments might turn those gamers off completely. on top of that, parts of the world are procedurally generated. The main sections are not, but the space in between is. And it's not done that good, to be honest. There are dead ends that make no sense from a level design standpoint. And you can sometimes see how they put a room together. There are moments when you realize you had almost the same exact room 5 minutes earlier, with the treasure in the same position. So, the game is not flawless... BUT! It still is so much fun! The art style is fantastic, the animations really good. The controls are tight. The level design may not be as good as in Ori, for instance. But that's not the end of the world. You still have great design in many areas, hard to reach treasures, secrets to discover - typical metroidvania stuff. And the difficulty spikes - well, i love them! ^^ I really like this system that spawns like 40 enemies all at once, and you have to try to survive. And no, it's not impossible. It's a matter of skill, of learning how the different enemy types behave, and of the perks you're running. I went for shield regeneration, which helps enormously against the hordes. It's always challenging, which is not necessarily the case in all metroidvania games. TL;DR: yes, the game has certain problems. That doesn't mean it's a bad game. I stopped playing Pyre for this. That has to mean something. ;)

CONTRIBUTIONS FROM OTHER MEMBERS (I added whatever description/text was there unedited):

Nex Machina

We need Housemarque stuff on PC.

The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker

There was that 1 game i wanted to plug , but i cannot remember its name .
You play a psychiatric or something like that , that is investigating a case .... its kinda like her story ...
Thing was , the more you talk with people , the higher the chance is for you to get insane ....

Thimbleweed Park

I've been trying to do my bit and spread the word about this game through a number of GAs, but I would seriously recommend this to anyone who enjoys point & click adventure games.

Sally's Law

One of my favorite indie game. Full price just $4, now on 70% sale. Please support them if you simply love your dad :)

Gran Vitreous

shoot 'em up meets looting and randomized modifiers : from not able to shoot and survive for 45seconds to unlimited secondary/ultimate ammo. IIRC iwas only one in a groupees bundle before release.

Starcrawlers

Shortest way to describe the game: Shadowrruners crawling ... IN SPACE(just without the story depth). Funded with kickstarter and recently got out of Early Access the game is quite fun to play though it has its downsides. It has a good class/build variety but later on combat turns into rotation of skills for most part(the combat is turn-based btw).

Lethe - Episode One

Shameless self-plug. An atmospheric first person adventure game with survival horror elements (and actual gameplay). 50% off!

We've had good reviews so far, and multiple players mentioning that we ought to get more attention. We're currently working on the next title, but with less than half of the previous (already small) team (due to low sales). It would be nice to know if there is still a desire for quality horror games.

Adding it to your wishlist or just visiting the page is welcomed as well.
(Though apparently most people are already waiting for it to become dirt cheap before they buy it. sob)

Bullet Heaven 2

Don't Open the Doors

This is a claymation action rpg that deserves more than the 3K~ it did. If you like claymation, you may also like the classic point and click The Neverhood (it's sadly abandonware at this point. You could vote for it on GOG if you'd like...)

Solitairica

Solitairica is my pick. Never thought a roguelike version of solitaire would be fun, but it really is.

jiggakills' list unedited:

A Rose in the Twilight (1.5K)
A Hole New World (1K sales)
Alwa's Awakening (3K sales)

Payroll

Cheap as hell with only 1,234 ± 984 owners. Yeah, it's sad to see. It's not like people even come across the store page, seeing as how my review is the most "helpful" recent review. It only has 4 votes.

Peregrin

Add Peregrin to your list please.

P.S. from me: This game looks amazing. And it sold only a few hundred copies. I didn't know it even existed, until robilar5500 posted it here. And I bet the same goes for most of you people as well. I might buy this one in the near future. Just have a look at the store page. You might like what you see there. Seems to be a real hidden gem. :)

I agree the ownership data could be presented more clearly. Enhanced Steam does a better job presenting the same data, with the range clearly indicated (e.g., for Fidelio: between 508-2,782), which is clearer than the bar graph and more intuitive than the +/- range.

I played and finished The Fidelio Incident and must say I wasnt impressed at all with it.
I had to push myself to finish the last half hour of the game.

Games like this depend on the story and the emotions. I didnt touch me (excluding the pub scene). Games like Firewatch, Everybody's gone to the rapture, gone home, and Edit Finch all had an intriguing, good and emotional story. Those games delivered.
The Fidelio Incident is just walking from one heatsource to the other and some valve turning puzzles in quite a dull environment. With an imo predictable story.

Btw, you can easily finish this game under 2h and get a refund, if you want to be an ass.

Looking at how much some "earlyaccessbuggedstuff" is selling (we all know what game has recently reached the 4 millions goal), the sales of Devil Daggers are "okayish" but I think it'd deserve more. Another title is Doom&Destiny (with its "sequel", Doom&Destiny Advanced), absolutely great game (it's also available on iOS and Android).

I would say all three of these do not qualify - DD has sold 250k+, Her Story has sold a lot and been bundled + received awards, Nex Machina is getting lots of hype online already

Selling a lot of copies with a 1$ bundle price is not a "positive" thing, honestly. Devil Daggers sold a lot (260k) but only half of the people who bought it (140k) really played it. Probably because most of them got the game in a bundle. Same for Her Story: 370k owners but only 209k total players.

I agree, but in the case of DD and especially HS I think profit has been made, the latter won numerous awards and had a lot of exposure. Would love to see more people playing it, of course :)

I'm guessing people think 15 USD for something with "Episode 1" is too high-- especially if each Episode is purchased separately (I assume they are?). That would mean if there are, say, 3-4 episodes, then it's a $45-60 game. I haven't looked at the game closely enough to tell if it might be worth $15/episode, I'm just advancing a theory. But Amnesia and Outlast-- the obvious comparisons-- were only $20 for a "complete" game. Good luck-- the screenshots sure look nice! =)

Looks like a great game, but you're fighting an uphill battle against an established business model of hooking the audience with either a free or at most $10/$5-on-sale 'Episode 1', with later episodes similarly priced or a 'Season Pass' in the $25-30 range. Good luck!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's been on my wishlist since I saw it as well, though I'm not too fond of horror games. I personally don't like the episodic system games are being developed, mostly due to the time you have to wait until the next episode is released, and this one doesn't announce when the second could be available.
Take Kentucky Route Zero for example: launched on february 22 2013. We're almost ending 2017 and act 5 is still on development. I don't like that.

Also, promote more the game. I'm looking youtube and saw just one youtuber that has currently 321.000 followers. Send a copy for review purposes to a youtuber that has a good amount of viewers

Also, some people like more GOG than Steam due to DRM-free, and it's not there.

Adding the game to a bundle on Humble Bundle is it worth? I don't know about the earnings you'll get, but definitely would sell there. The bad part is that would get cheap on grey market for a long time.

Living in my country got expensive, plus the every day devalue of the currency that hits hard, and highest taxes in the world makes it more difiicult to pay full price for games. There are far more important priorities in life.

That's why I tend to only buy bundles, and avoid pirating games, to support developers, with what I can.

Don't know if I'm on point or not, or you'll agree with what I've wrote above, but I'm a potential customer, love stealth games.

PS: 30 minutes to write this lol. Just wanted to give you my thought on this.

Thank you for taking the time to write such an elaborate comment. We've posted a new blog on our first anniversary: http://koukoustudios.blogspot.com/2017/08/lethes-1st-anniversary-and-lethe-2.html

Sending review copies unfortunately does not (always) equal sales, we have sent to many a popular reviewer and there are plenty of LP's available, yet we barely saw any extra sales.

As for GOG: we were denied access. Bundles are a love and hate relationship for developers, being part of the right one at the right time can mean all the difference in the world.

Thanks for being supportive!

As a high quality game that revived a dead genre once sparsely populated by amazing games like Commandos, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun deserves all the support it gets. While I admit that it seems to be doing much better than some of the games mentioned here, it's just as important for this game to keep getting attention so that we can get more games like this in the future.

Okay then! The games you mentioned OP already happened to be on my gargantuan wishlist, but I'm happy to hear positive things about them. Personally, I'm a huge fan of media that tries to set itself apart visually. I'd recommend:

The Magic Circle is a game about game development. You play as a QA person of an unfinished game stuck in development hell. It has great voice acting and the gameplay is super refreshing (you mess with npc AI). It sold 110K which is not bad (albeit a huge chunk of it was thanks to Humble Monthly)... I won it on this site and it's become one of my favourite games of all times. I believe it deserves more love.

Message Quest is a very short, adorkable Point And Click with a simple but fun story and a gorgeous art style. It's super cheap and only sold around 21K.

Don't Open the Doors is a claymation action rpg that deserves more than the 3K~ it did. If you like claymation, you may also like the classic point and click The Neverhood (it's sadly abandonware at this point. You could vote for it on GOG if you'd like...)

Edited to add:
Aviary Attorney. This VN a la Phoenix Wright is from my wishlist but I've heard so many good things about it! I love their idea of using caricaturist J. J. Grandville's art (which belongs to the Public Domain). It only sold around 20-25k.

I recommended something similar in the last thread (before khalaq), but more structured as I can see that this thread is just full of different recommendation and there is no incentive or pooling together to buy those games in reality.

A group that specifically selects (in some way) 1 title to buy and play each a month would be more ideal. Make it mandatory (with some exceptions) and you essentially have a indie game club (sort of like a book club).

EDIT: Not solid idea with all the rules in place. Just a concept of what the group could be in some way. The idea is to organize group buys of gems with lows sales. How it is handled should be entirely up to the members of the group.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I would personally never become a member of such a group, the idea itself is very exploitable. How am I to be sure that what admins reccomends this week is actually what he personally thinks is the best and deserves attention and not the case of developer bribing him to make recommendation for his game to boost sale numbers (especially with mandatory purchase).

not to mention that sheer idea of mandatory purchases is stupid AF. Game XYZ may be the best of it's genre and deserving a lot more attention that it's getting, but what if it's a genre that totally does not intrest me? Something may be the best sports manager ever, totally worth of getting more sales, game may really deserve support - still I won't buy it anyway, simply because I don't play sports managers.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I didn't have in mind that the admins pick the game. It should be done by the group members in some way. This is up to the group itself.

I also didn't outline any of the rules how mandatory it is or how should it be done. You can have for example 4- 5 games in the list from different genres and you can pick one or something else.

It's only on a concept level. The rules entirely are based on the group members and what they agree on.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't think that would work. A lot of these games are very niche and some of them cost 20+ dollars.

Book/movie/game clubs in my experience work better when you're either:

  • Sticking to classics (you can also easily pick in a library)
  • Going for a theme everyone's interested in and signs up for (sci-fi, fantasy, non-fiction, a different genre/each month...)
  • Let the partecipants vote without making reading the book mandatory for those who are not interested in it.

The original idea was to boost the sales and recommend some indie gems that are worth buying and playing and haven't gotten a lot of traction. There is no way to bypass the cost of the games as the idea itself was to buy them close to their full price near launch. We have already a lot of recommendation places.

How these group rules are place are up to the group and its members. Just a concept

The current thread is just like any other thread with game recommendations. There is too much noise and no organization to actually support one game or the other by buying the game. Maybe I'm pessimistic, but if there are really people who want to do something then it should be tied to actually buying the game in quantity, writing reviews and spreading the word about it.

There are of course other options for helping indies games, a random example off the top of my head:
Organize a steamgifts indie game of the month award. With certain rules to what qualifies and who gets to vote on the game.

You misunderstood me, what I meant is that very few people are willing to buy games that belong to niches they're not a fan of at such a high price.

An idea could be rotating a different set of criteria each month (month 1: story, action, strategy | month 2: story, tower defense, simulator | month 3: art style, puzzle, fps) but you would need a big enough group to pull it off. My experience with this kind of initiatives and big groups is that users then end up voting for games they liked and want other people to experience instead of games they're gonna play, so you end up with threads full of comments of people talking about how much they loved the game years ago and almost no newbies - instead of titles the majority was interested in actually playing. It's pretty demotivating.

Maybe I'm the one who's being defeatist, but so many of the indie gems in this thread actually got decent covering and great reviews (I saw Rakuen on Kotaku, /r/games, Siliconera and a bunch of other sites).

I would happily partecipate in such an endeavour but it would ultimately require a lot of commitment and probably make little to no difference, sadly.

I understood this thread or idea that it is mostly about NEW indies gems that have been released and haven't sold that much. Rather than games that have been available for years. The games that have been available for years usually end up in sales or bundles. I already see that the recommendations in the thread are wildly all over the place from well known and popular games to older established games.

I guess it all comes down to willingness and organizing a community. Without trying to build one you won't know if there is need for this. I personally would find it cool that there is a group that actively tries to find interesting games and organizes it\s members to try buy and play it all at once. It wouldn't be cool on the wallet though :)

I think it's all valid that you have expressed and I would actually agree with your last sentence both in regard to this thread and the theoretical group.

i like the idea of a group like this. but at the same time i am very skeptical that enough people will join (and more importantly: stay for more than just a month or two). maybe i'll give it a try, once i have a little more time for these things. even if i fail then - at least i tried, right? ^^

without trying we fail immediately :)

Reaching the right people seems the first step and is a bit difficult.
Second step is working out the process of selecting titles and rules of the group

After that it just functions on it's own- dies or lives :)

What do you mean by "too late?" It could be timed well with the release of The Final Cut update.

"The story is over" in that the "Dreamer cycle" (primarily Zoe Castillo's story) is over. There could still be more in the same universe-- in particular, the rest of April Ryan's story in what's sometimes dubbed, "The Longest Journey Home," if I recall correctly.
Other than long delays and poor communication-- staples in most Kickstarters-- the Kickstarter was very successful, raising 1.5m+ USD (181% of their goal) and (eventually) fulfilling their KS promises-- once they start shipping physical copies, which should be "soon(tm)."
Their success has also enabled them to bring the game to consoles (XB1, PS4) and they have at least one more unrelated game (and probably others) in the pipeline.

TLJH hasn't had a Kickstarter. Yes, the $2M USD Dreamfall Chapters stretch goal "failed," but that doesn't make it a failed Kickstarter. And yes, you would think that if DFC sold well enough they'd want to make more (like TLJH).

So back to the original point-- if more people bought DFC (hence the purpose of this thread), maybe they'd be able to make TLJH, or at least justify a Kickstarter campaign for it.

Since I am a simulator enthousiast, I'll share some of my favorites that fit the description. There are more, but these are still being updated.

Motorsport Manager
Assetto Corsa (don't buy if you don't own a proper wheel)
Automobilista (don't buy if you don't own a proper wheel, I'm serious)
BeamNG.drive
Universe Sandbox 2

Some I think qualify, but others don't agree belong on the list are
Euro Truck Simulator 2
American Truck Simulator
Kerbal Space Program

These titles have continuous support, most have mods and all serve as a platform where new content is added to, not rehash the same stuff over and over and sell it for full price. DLC (if there is any) is fairly priced and optimisation and bug fixes are actually a thing. These developers actually care.

Kerbal Space Program has 1,796,286 owners?
Euro Truck Simulator 2 has 3,674,007 owners...

those don't look like in need of support.

I don't think that is a large user base at all if you look at what people generally play and looking how old both of them are already (Euro Truck Sim was released januari 2013). But big or small is always subjective.

But anyway, a large theme from the thread KillingArts referred to was that there are few developers that care about pc gamers. A lot of people, like me, argued that most games are not worth full price because they get rereleased every year with basically the same content and not enough support. These do have support and that's why Euro Truck and Kerbal are also on the list.

No way. ETS 2, ATS and KSP are all games that are wildly popular and made extreme amounts of money and support. They also have extremely dedicated fans, so the "player base" issue isn't there.

I've edited my post to show that I think they belong there, but that others disagree. Now people see my opninion, they see yours and can decide for themselves.

Well, the idea was to encourage dev support by buying games that should have garnered a lot more sales than they did. I'm afraid Euro Truck and Kerbal don't fit into the category of "neglected games" on which we have been trying to shine a spotlight. I do see your point, however. Perhaps it would have been more appropriate to announce upcoming games by those specific developers who are doing such a wonderful job?

I'm not aware of those. Squad only does Kerbal as far as I know and SCS only does Euro and American Truck sim atm. But I do see your points as well, I simply disagree. So by all means, make your list, leave these out and your comments have been noted and are there for all to see. I've edited my post to emphasize this.

i am sorry, i see you seem to love those games passionately. and i understand that. those are obviously great games. but i was really more thinking of games that sold so little that in some cases the devs might not be able to make any new games.

Take The Fidelio Incident as an example. it looks great and has two fantastic voice actors. it certainly wasn't cheap to develop. and it sold 2000 copies. that's nothing. that won't even cover the development costs. how long can a company go with such a small amount of money? even if they are an extremely small team, this will only last a couple of months. not enough to make a new game. that is the kind of game i would like to focus on here. games that really need sales. this example was a little extreme, not every game in the list has to meet exactly this criteria. but the Kerbal guys - they're probably writing code on golden laptops now, while sitting in a pool full of 100$ bills. i don't think they need our support as much. ;)

Assetto Corsa (don't buy if you don't own a proper wheel)

dude you just saved me some money, I was going to buy this as soon as I sold some cards but now I'm going to remove it from my cart (damn, should've bought that G27 for $140 when I had the chance -.-)

They were selling it at $120, so I went to get one and they raised the price to $140, so I got mad and waited for too long to buy it and then it went out of stock (yes, I'm and idiot)

Last shift is nice like watching a movie, but there is little replay nor much gameplay (just consists of quickly choosing option a or option b).

Permalink

well, if you replay it, you most likely get one or two new scenes and a new ending (and of course new dialog). so i would say for an interactive movie, there's quite a bit of replay value. :)

For you it would be, for others not so. It's not even like you can save and go load up a savegame and try a different route (as some old (FMV) adventure games were) nor does it really change the "game" that much.

I dunno, i just got shot and died when i tried it, i can imagine trying it once more for a more proper ending, but personally i could care less for even more slightly different endings. If it were more then just 1 or 2 scenes, it would be different.

well sure, compared to the freedom you have in other games you're right. but for an FMV game, i think there's reasonable replay value. and the endings, from what i've read (played it only one time so far, planning on a second playthrough), are quite different. SPOILER: for instance, i think it's a pretty big difference, if you get the girl and the money instead of everybody dying and the money falling to the bad guys. ^^

Not really. Bad marketing mostly and bad coincidences didn't allow it to become a huge hit. It's famous, but not as famous as it deserves to be.

Immortal Redneck
Yeah, still kinda new, but also still only 12k owners at this point, according to steamspy. And as it's my favorite game of 2017 so far, I think it deserves another plug :)

The Cat Machine
Only 5k owners. I'm not sure it's worth full price as it's a limited in terms of gamepla mechanics, but for the current sale price it did keep me entertained for a few days.
