Well, I actually didn't have computer at home since I think 2004. But before that I had a chance to get to computer at my mother's job. I don't remember first time but from what I remember it already had Windows 98 installed and I played some F1 game (I don't remember how it was called but I really loved it) and Lines 98. I have no idea about other specifications of that computer. But yeah - now I have crappy HP notebook which I have for about 4 years now. And I still have Lines 98 installed because I remember it from when I was like 5 or 6 years old so I really, really still love it. And yes - now I'm almost 17.

In 96, I had a Terminator console. There were very popular in Europe. We had those yellow diskets, that had games, and some said they have 9999 games, but had only 4-5 :D Than my dad buyed me a computer in 2002, 4gb HDD and 128 RAM, and CD-ROM 8x. Atomic Bomberman was my first computer game, a game that I still rule :D

I think the first contact was when I was about 6. My cousin, who at the time was an IT student, was trying to do something on it but for some reason failed time again and again. Then I grabbed the mouse and clicked on a spining globe or something -> problem solved.

I don't think that was it. It was a long time ago but I think he was filling some fields in a long page but finished it without clicking on that globe and because of that it returned an error. I have no idea why clicking on that icon was so important but that was the solution.

He had registered the free hours of aol but didn't find the "send" button.
On my 286 there was a DOS menu. With "1" should be loaded the mouse driver. That never worked and i didn't get the reason. So i never used the mouse for weeks and some games won't work. My 4 years younger brother (at this time 5 or 6 years old) typed in "mouse" and driver were loaded.
At this time i began to learn about BATCH and written my own 1.bat file. This is the source code for archivement:
mouse
It was a great time!

I first used a computers at school when I was 7 or 8 but I wasn't allowed to do much on them so I don't really remember. First computer I ever owned was a Pentium 4 computer 10 years ago. Bought an Asus laptop in 2009 which I'm still using today.
I'm a computer noob :(

Honestly I started with infocom, played it with my folks back when I was little, from there I started playing semi educational games like dinosaur 3d adventure back when we had a crapple in the early 90s no idea what it was but it was bad and old XD the first game game i played alone would probably have been space quest.
honestly that whole time is a blur... too long ago XD
after that... things i remember markedy was Myst... doom (first shooter I played)... diablo 1 as the first rpg... and well after that... everything else heh

I started using a computer when I was like 3 or 4. I don't rememeber the name. ^^ I played a game called "USA Racer" alot.(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA91y3EZaiA) It was just a more or less crappy racing game but it was great for me. After that I started to play some other games like Anno 1503, later on 1702 when it was released, with a friend. Than Half Life 1 and Spellforce 1. Two of the greatest games I've ever played.

That was way back when. I still remember hearing about this new "computer thing" when it first came out. I helped test it to make sure it was stable and efficient. Had a few bugs, but we worked it out. It used to be only for the rich, but eventually just about every scholar had an abacus in his dwelling. Those were good times. :)

My family got our first computer around '98 or '99. The first game I got for PC was Myst...needless to say the patience of a 10 year old isn't really suited for that game and I was scared away from PC games until I started playing WoW in the beginning of '06.

First game I used to play regularly on a computer was Moon Buggy in 1985 on a C64 that was available in a mall. A year later I purchased a C128, 1901 screen, 1571 floppy disk drive, 1530 datasette with all my savings (that would translate to a current amount of $3'300) and later acquired a C64, C64 portable and a C128D(iesel).
Next big milestone was an Amiga 2000. After owning a couple more Amigas (500, 1000, 3000) I moved over to PC in 1990. I ordered and assembled parts and was able to upgrade my machine(s) by selling custom built computers.
Around that time I started a BBS that ended up with 6 phone lines. I remember traveling once from Central Europe to London in order to purchase a "cheap" 660 MB drive (5.25" full height drive), this was at a time were the standard drive was between 40 and 80 MB.

It ran on two lines for quite some time and at one point an "investor" put the money up to upgrade the hardware and phone lines. Software used was PCBoard. I originally wanted to go with /X (AmiExpress) but for me it was easier (as in cheaper) to build and maintain a multi-line BBS on PC.

AmiExpress! CNet, RemoteAccess, FidoNet... Ah, old time...

I started with a TRS-80 Color Computer from Radio Shack in 1983. Sill have it in the basement with the audio cassettes full of games. The learning manual was very well done and set the basis for my programming skills that allowed me to become a software developer.
Moved on to a 4.77 Mhz XT in 1986 for wich my dad insisted that was a work-only computer as there were no games for it. I later found out Jumpman from one of my uncles, then quickly grew a collection of over 300 games over the next couple of years.
Bought my first computer when I moved out of the house for college in 1991. A whopping 25 mhz 386 computer with SVGA video and a whole MB of RAM.
Been upgrading mostly yearly ever since to keep my rig up to date.

I don't remember the specs on my first computer, as I was probably 5-6. Other than some educational games (something about a playground with a creepy robot kid and "lessons" on floppies that I didn't have, I don't remember its name) I played a whole lot of point-and-click adventures. More specifically, Space Quest, King's Quest, Quest for Glory...so many quests. So many hours spent wondering why I had to throw a boot at a cat to not die.
My first computer was one my dad put together for me. All I really remember is that it had a six gig hard drive, and I was probably eight or nine. Played lots of other games over time, like Doom and Quake, Warcraft, Dune II, Ambush at Sorinor, Zork, yadda yadda. Nostalgia!
I miss my old PC Gamer demo discs, and whatever other magazines had demo discs. Coconut Monkey and his Gravy Train. :<
(also, the demo discs with the space ship interior, but they never had games that were as fun.) Since this is a thread full of people who play things, does anyone remember a game in which you play some sort of tank from a first-person perspective, and rolled around a map building/upgrading turrets and towers? It was 3D, but I'll be damned if I remember too many details.

I haven't the slightest idea what the very first computer I ever used or owned was. I was pretty young though when I got my first computer. Now my first game? Well I don't even remember that. I do remember playing Warcraft, Catz and Commander Keen when I was about 4 or 5.

My first encounter with a computer was '90 or '91. My father gets something
like a notebook from work for some days. It was a XT with less than 10 Mhz.
Maybe it was a Toshiba T2000
Althought he gets a floppy with Prince of Persia. It was the first game I
ever played on a computer. I've played it on this notebook for hours on the
amber monitor and get squared eyes from that.
But '89 i got a Sinclar ZX 81. My greater brother typed in a little program
like paint. At this time I were 6 years old. I were fascinated about the dot
which paints something on the screen. Typing on the keyboard was very hard and
you need lots of symbols, peek and poke commands. If someone interest - my
father-in-law have a sinclair zx 81 already and a book with much programs.
If someone want i'd scan this.
'92 oder '93 i got my own computer. AT 286, 12Mhz, 1 Mbyte RAM, 20 Mbyte HDD.
It was great! There was Prince of Persia installed :-)
I've played much with this system. There was DR DOS 3.41 installed. Some day
i tested the program "password" and secured the system files. A week later i got
MS DOS 5.0 - loved the DOSSHELL
I could write for the next few days which systems in which way I had destruct but for
the next few weeks what i learned from it.
How's your way to modern computers?
Edit: Very interesting in at this story is that i'm allowed to play Doom and Duke 3D
my parents haven't said anything against that. With 12 I've played Doom 1 and no one
said something. Today...
Edit2: A funny story... my parents never saw the potential of computer. So it was only
a waste of time for them. I've learned most of all because of games that wouldn't work.
They never understand this. Some day they said, i've play to much and used a key to lock
the computer. Some of you know the keys.If they are closed the BIOS say "No keyboard" and
stop booting. I've cut the wire, made it longer and put a switch in the circuit. I've hide
the switch between the other cables at the back of the desktop.
