The same reason I watch movies or read books.
An interesting story, having fun with my friends (I play BF3 every weekend with my friends), or to relax after a hard day. Or simply when I'm bored.
EDIT: I like it when games have the "ability" to do the same thing that good books do: change your view on the subject. I liked Spec Ops: The Line because it's a much different view on war than most games.

don't worry. i drink a lot on the weekends*, but the possibility of me drinking myself to death is basically non-existent.
*with friends. i don't drink much when playing (if at all). this was more meant as a joke. ;)

It depends on the genre that you're playing, and it's not always about fun, I like to check what people are capable of doing with game engines and coding, that's why I've rarely ever farmed any game without playing it for a while to know more about the game and what it's about and stuff.
Which reminds me that I have 1-2 more levels in Dead Bits to beat :v

Like many things in life its mixed how they make me feel. I don't watch much TV nor read books any more so I guess playing games is an escape but can also be a way of interacting with the rest of the family as both myself and my wife play LOTRO & I'll play the Lego coop games with my son. This is just pure fun.
Occasionally I'll get frustrated, either due to my own inability or some bug/feature in a game (I manage a non-gaming programming team for living so I get frustrated when I see poor implementation). I really should drop a game at this point but I'm a stubborn so and so and like to overcome ...
I particularly admire games with stylised graphics or something novel in them. I can vividly remember the first time I took a flying creature in WoW to travel to a new location or the first time I stood on Weathertop in LOTRO and just looked out and took in the view. I can savour those moments without any need for additional gameplay; just enjoy the thrill of something new and exciting.
Sometimes I play games to release stress. A quick go on Borderlands 2 and a heavy headcount can do wonders after a stressful day at work :)
And playing games has some knock on effects. I've found a great community of largely like minded people here on Steam Gifts, I've started to collect games which has proved to be unexpectedly addictive. I also allows me to interact much better with some of the younger guys who work for me as they all play games of one sort or another.

I love games and they do make me happy, but I don't use them as a tool to make me feel better. In fact, when I'm really sad I don't feel like playing at all. To feel better I like watching my favorite TV shows. The Big Bang Theory for example makes me laugh and I find it very funny and entertaining. Or I watch shows like Veronica Mars and Grey's Anatomy... they have a deeper meaning to me and I often feel conflicted about them because they make me sad as well as happy. I get emotionally exhausted when I watch them, which makes me deal with my issue and cry about it so I end up feeling better.

Yes, games make me happy! I like being happy and I think you should be too!
Which is why I've chosen the path of the game developer. To make others feel the joy I do when playing games.
(although currently i'm android developer and not making any games... but game jams are coming soon!)

Only a few games make me happy. As a kid i used to play almost every game that was coming out.Growing up made me become more picky.Games are something special to spend your time.My favorite ones are those that have a great story, i can play for hours.. but most of the time i play games with multiplayer because it's fun to challenge others esp when it comes to friends. :D

This is a very interesting topic. I often wonder what the driving force is in making a person choose a particular game to play when there are so many options to choose from. For example, I look at my library and see all of my games, but I know I desire a medley of emotions, experiences, and challenges, so I pick a game that will fill that niche. Sometimes, the game itself, or how long it has been also effects my game choice. If it's a relatively new game, I am most likely to try it out to see what I can experience from it. If it's an old game I haven't played for many years, I might play it if I feel like I want to travel back in time to a more innocent world. Often times, however, I notice that although my library of games is vast, I can still desire more games. Perhaps it's because I want to have a game for every different piece of my life that is currently missing at any given time, or I may need to express an emotion that may disrupt the balance of my life. I feel that why we play games is more philiosophical than simply if it makes us happy. I play games to feel happy, to be challenged, to show my creativity, to be with friends, or to escape this obviously corrupt world that we cannot control.

It was only a few years ago that I started playing games other than as a means to fill in some time while I was waiting for something else. But when my girlfriend passed away, it sort of became an escape and now I admit I can't really do without it-- and I don't think that's very good for me, sadly.

I play different games for different reasons. Do I get happy from playing games? Yes, not the same kind of happy as I get when spending time with friends, but I would say that playing games makes me happy.
But I don't only play games to become "happy" in the traditional sense, I play games to unwind, to relax, to challenge myself, because I crave a good story to immerse myself in and so on. TV does not do that for me, in fact I hardly ever watch TV these days, other than the news.

Douh what's trully right and wrong these days? Maybe one day my "happy" reason will turn into a reality and I might end up gaming, but same time the world ^^ Nothing is right or wrong these days, everything just IS... ^^ And been happy with what you got is a choise, so I could chose to be missrable, but I prefer to be happy ^^

They make me happy sure, but they can drive me crazy as f*** to and that is what's beautifull when it comes to games. They can effect your emotions and the right game can really take me away from reality... I have 2 kids and a 'not average day job' (or how it is named in proper English idk). When I come home from work, i play with my kids, make diner, eat, play some more, then put the kids to bed... Then it's 'me-time' really, pc, headset and play something. My wifes knows this, when I'm in a game i don't hear or see anything but the game xD
I think everybody loves games. My dad is 70y, he hates pc and consoles and he can't work with them either but he fills out a sudoku and a crossword everyday in the newspaper because it makes him happy. So that's his way of 'gaming' I suppose.
So yes, games make me happy and others to I think.

When I play them I'm actually happy, but when daily life deprive me from playing my games and stacking them on my backlog... it depresses me. :(

Why do people play games? Is it to distract from the daily struggle of life? Do people play games in the same vein as others watch TV or go for walk?
Why do you, yes you, play games? Does playing them bring you happiness?
For me, games are an art medium, a canvas for the artist to express himself. For me they are a drug, a form of escapism, while immersed in a game, I am not in the real world, the game fulfills fantasies that can't be realized in this tangible world, they provide experiences, they fade away all the problems of life, but like all drugs it wears off in time, and a new dose must be administered.
So, what does playing games feel like for you? Simple fun or a deeper purpose?
