I just created an account and tried to claim the game on the website and it won't let me without enabling SMS protection. I have not tried downloading the desktop app.
Edit: I just installed the desktop app and it requires you to enable SMS protection to claim it there as well.

It's ok. Starts out quite bad and way too easy. Turns ok-ish once you reach strikes, nightfall strikes, raids and the other end game content.

I'm quite familiar with D2 thanks to the numerous controversies, haha. It's not that I don't want to give the game a try, it's that I never intend to ever spend any money on it, not on DLCs, not on lootboxes, so I'm not sure if such an incomplete experience would be any fun at all.

The base game feels pretty bare bones with just ~ 4 planets and a very short and unmemorable story but lootboxes (engrams) don't really affect the game negatively.
Unless you're trying to collect a full set of limited amor during an event (for example Festival of the Lost = Halloween) I doubt you'll ever be tempted to buy an engram (partly because most of the time all you get from engrams is cosmetic stuff like ships, sparrows (hoverbikes), emotes and other stuff that doesn't make you stronger.)
Edit: On the other hand if you enjoyed Halo multiplayer the Destiny 2 base games gives you pretty much the full PvP experience since all Forsaken maps can be played without owning Forsaken. (you'll only be missing the new sub-classes and a couple of Forsaken-only weapons)

As a matter of fact, I am one of the collectors (hoarders, really :D) who like to unlock as much cosmetic items as possible. My philosophy is, if it's in the game, it's mean to be obtained. Thanks for sharing your thoughts though, I don't think I'd enjoy the game much :)
