I'm looking for these and can't find any that look worth while.

What I classify as a Survival game is The ability to scavenge areas and maybe build but always facing a risk of dying and having to restart.

Games so far: FTL, fallout, Dayz, Kenshi, Warz, Don't starve, Terraria, Stalker games, Forest,

Sword of the Stars: The Pit is a pretty already survival game. Strictly speaking, it's a roguelike, but there is a hunger meter and diseases to add a bit of survival to it.

The hardest part is to keep on living after playing such a bad game. It will suck the will to live right out of you.

Now that's real survival.

kenshi. sort of. both that its sort of on steam, and sort of a survival game.... its a pre-play type game which has great potential as a survival squad-based game.

Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead
http://en.cataclysmdda.com/

It isn't on steam, and it uses ASCII art (ew) but it does have good survival elements, and extensive control over your character make the game fun.
Plus, even though it uses an ASCII art style, there is a button that you can push at any time in game, and it highlights any tile you select and tells you exactly what it is. Ground, items, enemies (mostly zombie based, but...well... in my first playthrough I was attacked by a pack of wolves, and finished off by a Jabawock) anything.

The only true survival games that I've played are Dwarf Fortress and Don't Starve. To a lesser extent Minecraft, but... it's Minecraft.

Are forgeting Deadlight, I think it's called, the one from microsoft, the one where there's a toxic fog, you scavenge for items, do small quests (bring items to survivors) and have a bow, you can point your gun to some thugs and they 'might' surrender.. or not..
There was another, plataformer style, noir art style and the main role had the actor David Carusso (Horatio from CSI) doing the voiceover... Although this game isn't much about survival and items, like Don't Starve or others.

Now that others mention zombies, there's a Zafe House Diaries, indie game but has inventory, quests and survivors management, could worth checking out... Just my 2 cents :)

Wat? The platformer is Deadlight and it was published by Microsoft. The first game you're talking about is I Am Alive and it's by Ubisoft.

Stranded 2.

Basically you are stranded on an isle, and must fend off the local wildlife, all the while finding food and water, building campfires, living space (tents, small huts) and stuff like wells and you craft your own tools and weapons, in short everything that is a survival game. The ultimate goal is to find a way off the island. Unlike most other games mentioned here it is completely in 3D, though the graphics aren't very good. It isn't on Steam but can be downloaded for free, here.. Or more info here

I've heard that I Am Alive is a good one but that it's also a bad port. I haven't actually played it (sorry) so I can't vouch but thought I'd throw that out there.

I know what you're looking for and I was looking for something like that for a long time and I'm disappointed that there is nothing like this out there, BUT I recently found something that is better than anything in this genre that I have ever seen, this game is not out yet it's on greenlight and was already greenlit so it will be available in late 2013 but enough talk here is THE LINK and tell me what you think about it :)

If you don't mind modding, then I would get Skyrim and add in the Frostfall mod, plus Realistic Needs and Diseases. This will require you to bundle up in the freezing weather, create fires, set up tents, and then eat, drink and sleep. Then I'd also check some other immersion mods for it because most immersion mods also add some sense of survival.

Any rogue-like like Dungeons of Dreadmor and Rogue Legend has permadeath feature, but I'm afraid it has no building feature. Terraria has, but it was already mentioned above, so I don't know what to offer, sorry. :(

Project Zomboid - Although this one isn't on steam yet it was already green lit (it was the first game to be green lit if I'm not mistaken). It has a lot of savaging and building but I wouldn't say "surviving" as dying is the only known variable in the game so this is more of a "how long can I stay alive for" rather then trying to survive. I highly recommend this one...
