I am quite familiar with most of their tunes on bass. Not as confining as lot of the hard rock and heavy metal that was known on a large scale at the time. Quite a few who had a bit more overall talent/skills that were playing in the shadows, and remain there to this day - but those guys all paved the way for what I listen to now. Constant evolution, and constantly pushing the boundaries of known music. I mostly played Two Minutes to Midnight, The Trooper, and Hallowed Be Thy Name. I had to find tunes the rest of the bands would know, so I could never get very much further than Rush or Yes or Iron Maiden... unfortunately. Wasn't about to lay down dead for some boring Judas Priest or something... riding 1 or 2 notes an entire song on bass. D: (I had to do that a whole lot too with garage bands for Heavy Metal/Hard Rock - kinda glad since that boredom and lack of speed, note, or time changes with percussion motivated me to find harder to play music)...
I wanted that "little kid" to grow up.... I couldn't leave it a kid inside, only playing what I considered weak and beneath what was possible. It needed more skills! My quest began - as did that of my bass - which thirsted for much much more knowledge and theory and obscurity and making chaos into perfect balance and creating order out of such... the monotony than was the normal status quo... Okay, I'm really blabbing. But yeah, it got super boring, so I had to find better stuff to play, I guess... I could have just said that. Sounded better making it all dramatic, and writing these longer sentences, though.
Getting used to an acoustic 6 string fretless bass I got a couple of weeks ago. I'll probably jam out to some Maiden album just because it'd be a nice way to sort of "ease my way" into harder stuff on bass, since I am kinda feeling it out - where the natural notes are, and how much it shrinks in space as I move higher up. Hard to explain, but one of those things one must get used to as they play I suppose. I am as green as green can be on the fretless side of things... but it's something I've been meaning to get more into.

Don't fear blabbing, I'm not super talkative but I enjoy reading what others say.
Iron Maiden is my favorite band, i can't even think to a song I didn't enjoy from them. By the way, the live version of Fear Of The Dark is awesome, but you obviously know it already ;)
I never played guitar myself, but I'm curious, what is the advantage of playing fretless? (I have nearly 0 musical knowledge)

You can hit those in between notes frets block - normally they, the frets, sort of hold that note for you across the whole neck fretboard in that middle spot. that'd be my way of explaining it in simpler terms, though I honestly don't know how it works. I can get a lot more selection, and the sliding sounds great as well. Easier to shape and creep around in certain patterns, but I'm still trying to learn it. So far my dexterity and speedier stuff is not registering as well acoustically as I'd like, so more figuring it out as I play.
I think it makes you have to be very precise, which I will get accustomed to as well. Usually there is a fret, the middle and another fret all the way up to where the neck ends ( If I were to draw it, kind of like these shapes - ||| and you press between each - 5th and 7th have dots, and the 12th has double dots on most guitars that have the fret board inlays done). Seems as though I must touch right dead where a fret (the | spot in between notes/frets would be to make the same sounds, so much more variety, but much more room for error until I've gotten used to it more) instead of using the whole part in between...
The bass sound it creates are very interesting compared to fretted - I can usually hear certain 'tells' as well when I hear music, where I'm pretty sure it's a fretless being played in some situations. Very rich sound since there are no brackets or gates - not sure what you honestly call 'em. The structure is a bit different up more towards the actual body/base part. Not as much in the middle supporting it, or towards the back. Maybe someone with more actual musical knowledge could explain it better or in a simpler way, but that is what I've gathered from it so far.
I liked Caught Somewhere in Time by Iron Maiden... for some reason...

Thanks for the sharing. And I forgot these dots, since I've never played a guitar I wondered how to know where are the position for the notes without fret. I guess the dots help a lot.
I knew that on guitar/bass there are this effect where you pull (or push?) a string to another but I've learned something new today^^
Every songs of Iron Maiden are great, but I guess some of them are more interesting to play when you have a bass.

you may want to hear some Jaco Pastorius tune to hear the fretless bass tone
