Axis of Time series by John Birmingham It's WW2 military SF and although 1st book was kind of boring, 2nd and 3rd are very interesting.

I second The Name of the Wind recommendation, and also recommend checking out Brandon Sanderson if you haven't already. Mistborn is really good. I believe Warbreaker is even available for free from his website.

Hmm. Wicked, by Gregory Maguire. Don't be fooled by the musical, the novel has a lot more going on.

+1. But it takes discipline, it's a difficult book.

I agree with you for the first four books or so...after that, I personally feel like it spiraled into a messy, preachy rant about Goodkind's political views (not that I completely disagree with him, but it changed the entire heart of what started as a lovely, detailed fantasy series). This was sad for me, because I loved the early books so much. I even had signed copies (before the Hurricane Harvey flood destroyed them).

I will suggest Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang by Kate Wilhelm. It is brilliant, and IMO should be required reading for all high school students. It gets to the heart of the dangers of homogenization of humanity, the lack of creativity as everyone has to fit a particular mold, etc. In terms of the importance of its warning message, I put it side-by-side with Fahrenheit 451 and 1984.

On Stranger Powers by Tim Powers. Pirates and voodoo aplenty, and the action scenes are absolutely ace. The folks at LucasArts (RIP) cited it as one of the main influences for the Monkey Island games.

I totally second the recommendations of Dune (one of my favorite books), and the Ursula K. Le Guin books (particularly The Left Hand of Darkness).

I'd add to those:
Neuromancer by William Gibson
The Imajica by Clive Barker
Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
War of the Twins by Weis and Hickman
The Will of the Wanderer by Weis and Hickman
Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn
Conquerors' Pride by Timothy Zahn.

has someone recommended The name of the wind by Patrick Rothfuss yet?

If you are into epic fantasy, it's one of the best books i have read in this genre in the last years, it'll be a trilogy, so far two books have been released :)
