It is very true. The origin of our fame for loving sims, was mostly based on playing business/managing sims in the 90s though. These days an absurd amount of sims for mundane tasks are sold. They are equally played by kids under 10 years and by grown up men, older than 35. It's a safe place for kids and relaxing for adults.

Germany is a country that likes exporting vast amount of goods, mostly refined products. On the other side there is a huge influx of raw materials. The base for this is the variety of educational levels which allows to cover anything from low level assembly to spaceship technology. So there are large factories where people accept orders from the higher level. Some might think that they could do so much better, if they had the authority.
I think the people just love being somewhere in charge.

I'd say there's stuff that's far more populär but from what I've seen, Let's Play videos for sim games are popular (due to their stupidity?). ETS is one of the few that isn't just trash :D

true indeed, but why.. building/strategy games are very/more popular too like the here produced Anno series.
Like the heavy prevailing bureaucracy, I can only guess it's a mentality thing ^^
