Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic is one of the greatest city builders due to its realistic mode. In it, you need to transport everything (workers for buildings and builder, resources, materials) which means there's o "magic" building placement except for the few free ones which you need to get started.

It does sound difficult, but the neat thing about the game is that you can enable or disable certain aspects of the game besides the mentioned realistic mode: research, sewage, natural disasters, fires, seasons, etc.

REPUNK looks interesting, like a hidden gem version of Invincible!

Seven the days long gone is a hidden gem for me.

ABRISS( https://store.steampowered.com/app/1671480/ABRISS__build_to_destroy/ ) is a solid physics-based puzzler where you need to destroy stuff with a limited amount of parts. Similar to Besiege.

The Battle of Polytopie ( https://store.steampowered.com/app/874390/The_Battle_of_Polytopia/ ) is the Civilization formula distilled to it's basics. You can play a full game in 20-60 min and thus never really get to the boring end-phase of many longer "proper" civ games.

Alina of the Arena ( https://store.steampowered.com/app/1668690/Alina_of_the_Arena/ ) is a mix of Slay the Spire's card battle mechanics with Into the Breach's positioning and strategy mechanics.

thanks for the suggestions. most of them aren't genres i usually play, but repunk looks interesting and i hadn't heard of it yet, so it got a wishlist.

i'd recommend the void rains upon her heart. i won it here on sg and have sunk a ton of hours into it. basically a roguelike bullet hell shoot-em-up. ridiculous amount of unlocks and replayability. it's been in early access for a while, but it's constantly being updated and the (solo) dev is really cool. took about two hours of his time to personally help me out with a problem i had.

I'd recommend CrossCode to pretty much anyone. It's an action RPG with a lot of puzzles (I've seen people describe it as being "like Zelda" though I can't say for myself since I've never played any Zelda game ^_^' ). It has great RPG mechanics, puzzles, combat, story, characters... yeah, pretty much everything. Oh, also has accessibility options in case people get overwhelmed. Has a demo which can be played on Steam or even in your browser. :D

Rabi-Ribi is a Metroidvania Platformer with Bullet Hell elements... so probably not for everyone. But anyone who doesn't immediately chicken out of the challenge, it's an extremely well designed game. I still say that this is the best Metroidvania I've played. It's also very very cute. ^_^

The Messenger - another great Metroidvania. Has very funny dialogue. :D

(Ok, I should probably stop now before I list most of the indie games I've played. ^_^' )

It's great how easy it is to recognize the autojoiners just by looking at the comments :)

Is it okay to mention old(er) titles? Well, https://store.steampowered.com/app/538070/Bad_Dream_Coma/ deserves a mention.
In fact, all of the "Bad Dream" games deserve a mention: https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/44901/Bad_Dream_Bundle/
