Scientard 2/82

Can Science Answer This?

If carbon turns into diamond then under high pressure, why doesn't my pencil turn into diamond then I'm doing the exam?

I came here out of curiosity knowing I didn't have the level to join.
Worth it. Laughed my ass off. Thank you.

Because you're not doing it over a long enough period of time. On the flip side, did you know that that diamond ring you bought your wife will slowly turn into graphite? Well, the diamond that is. How is that for a romantic gift? Our relationship is like this diamond, it will slowly turn into something dull & boring.

Diamonds can actually be burned, just like normal coal... So I can draw two conclusions here:

  1. don't leave your diamonds in the burning house
  2. if relationships are like diamonds than it's better to keep them away from raging fire

Oh and also, 3. I can draw everything with only a tiny bit of graphite, so it's neither dull nor boring.

Interestingly enough, graphite actually has more stable bonds than diamond. Despite claims by De Beers, a diamond is not forever; over the course of its life, every diamond is slowly turning into pencil lead. (Of course, this transformation takes many millenia, so while a diamond is not forever-forever, its mostly forever enough for our purposes.)

Because the pencil isn't the one taking the exam. However, it's entirely possible that the carbon is your body is trying to assemble into diamonds. It's just that it's already tied to other atoms.

It's nice to be able to think positive about getting rich schemes when knowing you will fail your exam.
