I don't know about shooting themselves in the foot, the idea is that the game is part pixel art and part fluid hand drawn manga-style animation, so the black and white adds up to the idea of a "noir manga" instead of generic animation.
I have no idea what the requirements are lol but yeah, this game is a real beauty.
